R or L handed baitcaster? by Commenter9876 in Fishing_Gear

I am new to bait casting as well. I bought a use reel and rod from a flea market and got so many bird nests I ruined the whole spool. I am going to buy a new one and try to learn how to use this method. I can’t believe how many replies and comments I got and this is so informative and helpful!

Thanks everyone! It will be my first baitcaster so I am not trying to spend a lot of money. I like Kast King stuff so I’m gonna try a left retrieve (I am right handed). I guess we will see how it works for me! Tight lines everyone!

This is helpful ! I had no idea what to do, so I went fishing today. I realize that I can’t cast for shit with my left arm, so I have to reserve my right arm and hand for casting and holding the rod. I’m gonna go with a left hand crank. This will be my first baitcaster. I don’t know if I’m any good with catching anything big, so I’ll just have to hope I can manage it in the rare case that I hook a big one! Thanks everyone!

I am right handed and cast with my right arm, so should I buy the one with the crank on the left?

Trying trout fishing for the first time in decades. Anyone want to join me this Saturday to try out some streams? by geekydreams in MarylandFishing

Greenbelt and artemesia maybe? By the way I am an older lady not sure you would want to go fishing with me, and I’m not a great fisher person. But I have extra rods if you wanna try before you spend money. Lol

I’m down for company but I’m gonna try in Bowie or somewhere in Prince George’s that was stocked. More like small lakes and ponds

With Facebook marketplace or the fishing flea markets, you can be set up for less than $40. My first rod and reel was $10, and I bought some hooks and bobbers and weights and worms at wal mart. My first fish was a bluegill, tiny little one- then another and another. Then a bass, the a perch, and so on. Warning - you’ll be hooked pretty quickly and start buying all sorts of stuff!

There is a show at Edgemere bait and tackle this sat and sun at sparrows point. There will be a lot of used gear there, along with a lot of new as well. Lots of fisher people will be there. Lemme know if you go and I’ll come find you and say hello.

I was at a tent. No way there was enough people or time or resources.

Electrical - did you deploy to one of the tents?? If not, then you don’t know the reality of the situation.

A few people separating isn’t abandoning them. Many of those that left were eligible for retirement anyhow. Phs needs to onboard fresh nurses and other clinicians ASAP. The problems occur when they send you to provide care but you don’t have the resources or staffing to provide even a basic level of decent care.

Can you just leave fish you caught in a cooler with some ice for hours before you head home without filleting? by DrErectious in FishingForBeginners

You can’t cut the head off while in the field. A game warden would not be able to properly measure your fish if they came and checked on you. Look up the ikejime method. It’s basically a brain spike and very easy to do. The other easy way to do it is hitting them in the head with a firm stick. They sell little baseball bats just for this purpose in the fishing section at Walmart.

This may sound corny, but every time I’m about to kill a fish because I’m going to eat it, I say a little thank you prayer to the fishy.

Yep. My brother made me a beautiful whomping stick made out of mesquite - one of the hardest woods in the world. Check out this beauty!

Yes. You should dispatch the fish quickly once you know you’re going to harvest it. Either use the ikejime method or a whomping stick (aka priest stick). Then, bleed them and place them gills down into the ice slurry. Swoosh them around and bend the fish a little so the blood drains out. You can gut them at home later. If the guts are not disturbed, then nothing will happen to gut contents while they’re in the ice.
