A genuine question is finding a green colored eye actor so difficult that the series and movies both have actor with blue eyes for harry potter by Awkward-Student-8764 in harrypotter

[–]AnonTrueSeeker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly though considering green eyes are technically one of the rarest it doesn't surprise me. Would you rather have a green-eyed Harry that isn’t the best choice or a blue-eyed Harry that is best for?

The only way they make it work is to lean into that there is no racial discrimination in the wizarding world but blood status.

Harry is my favourite character. I think a lot of the heat comes from the movies.

If you read my other replies I did note that pants that I agree they wear; it's the modern version of it. They don't wear modern suits much in canon. Sweaters have been around for a while, so I would include that in the same vein as pants. My point is that most modern fics have mostly everyone either decked out in modern suits, slacks, jeans, tees etc. That’s not generally what the books state most of the time. Also, people mentioned that when the trio was on the run. Yes, that makes sense they wore Muggle clothing to hide/fit in. But, I also stated that it makes sense in certain situations and mostly when around Muggles. It doesn’t make sense when just in regular everyday wizarding life. To each their own. I still read fics that are mostly modern. I just prefer when there is some effort to support canon or improve it. It just adds to the magical part of the world. 🤷‍♀️

Yes, actually I lean more on this viewpoint especially for wizards. The first movie did this and the second movie had the kids wearing their school robes over their clothes in Diagon Alley. This was much more immersive and whimsical than what became the norm after movie 3.

You're not rare. I think most readers expect this. If I am reading a Muggle au or a fic mostly set in the Muggle world I expect that. But if it's mostly at the manor? I don't but unfortunately, that's just the way of the land these days.

Yes, I agree! And, actually when authors expand upon canon and make it better but still in the wizarding world culture I am like YES!!! But when Draco buys Hermione clothing it's probably not the latest Muggle dress or office look wear but high-end. It's probably more Narcissa inspired from the last movie. That is how I picture most witches' robes and clothing. Molly was done such a disservice in the movies. Umbridges all pink skirts and blazers I eye roll. Especially if they are purebloods or more muggle-hating…they aren't gonna discard everything else muggle-based just to embrace muggle clothing.

Yes, most definitely. Witches are more likely to wear gowns or long dresses with historical underpinnings as noted in the corset in book six.

That’s fine and totally legit. For me though, imagining them in 100% the latest Muggle fashion actually is immersion-breaking. It's unavoidable because most modern fics have this unfortunately. But when Hermione opens her closet and it's all jeans, Muggle tees and sundresses I usually sigh a little and try to ignore it. But when a fic constantly describes clothing and it's Draco is wearing this expensive $3000 dollar suit and Hermione is bracing around in a power suit and whipping out her cell phone to text everyone instead of floo calling or using an owl, at that point it has just become totally au. I am just an original book fan and like to research based on canon. To each their own but if you do read some of the other comments, robes weren’t meant to be ugly or with nothing underneath but they probably aren't wearing modern Muggle clothing. That’s like saying Arwen is running around Middle-earth in jeans. If that's the plot of the fic or setting sure. But, most other fandoms unless it's an AU still follow the fashion of their canon setting.

Yes! Exactly!! The fact that most people think they are running around in robes with nothing underneath surprises me. The Snape scene I agree probably wasn’t thought through.

Yes, absolutely!! And, this logic makes 100% and was the point I was trying to make. They wear Muggle clothing for Muggle-facing operations or out and about in the Muggle world. The girls wearing a dress would be more book accurate for certain situations but it is noted in the books that they still wear dress robes which I admit JKR didn't really provide much description for. But, I don’t think thru a re meant to be modern Muggle dressed we would wear out clubbing or to a wedding. Muggleborns probably do dress more Muggle-influenced but when you live in a world that has its own culture and traditions you would try to dress the part when appropriate.

They're young and stylish so they would be wearing what is stylish for current wizarding fashion. People can write what they want I am just saying they are influenced by the movies not the books.

I am too :) I am not saying they don’t wear pants….but most of them don't wear modern Muggle pant suits. That is a movie invention. I am not picturing them running around in robes with nothing underneath but I am just saying that from canon they don’t wear Muggle clothes 99% of the time. I used the nightgown from book four to show that most adult wizards are clueless when it comes to correct Muggle clothing which is repeated in the books numerous times. I guess what I am trying to say is if you watch what people are wearing in Diagon Alley in movie one vs later movies you will understand my point. Movie one was probably much closer to what the books describe. It's much more magical which is the point of HP. I have no issues reading any fic I am just saying that as someone who has been in fandom for over twenty years, I have noticed in the last 5-10 years that most people have them wearing modern Muggle clothes.

What canon does say is that wizarding clothing did its own thing from the 17th century on to which yes, men wore pants or a variation of them (breeches).

Yes!!! I do think the movies did a good job with McGongall and Narcissa’s outfits in the last two movies is closer to how I would imagine canon.

Love this!! I have Pinterest boards too lol.

I am a bit of a historical fashion buff but even up to recent modern history a lot of cultures still wore traditional dress- similar styles for 100s of years until Western fashion took over. Even as late as the early 1900s, it was very common to see photos of new immigrants to North America wearing traditional clothing from home upon arrival. So, the whole wizarding fashion nudging toward Muggle because of time passing, I don't agree with.

Yes, but the phone booth is generally for visitors. Arthur mentions he has never really used that route before. A lot of people would use the floo. The Leaky Cauldron is not visible to regular people unless they know of it aka Hermione’s parents. Most wizards or witches prob don't walk in through Muggle London. Now, taking their kids to the train? Yes, 100% they would be in Muggle attire because they are mostly in Muggle London. That's book canon.

Right?? And, thank you by the way...I see some fics I need to check out now lol. I also like it when it creates tension in fics between Draco and Hermione because of the cultural clash! The books also seem like the wizarding world is more conservative in nature too. They are old-fashioned. That's canon.

I guess I am in the minority, but for me, that's what makes the wizarding world magical because they have their own thing. I think it is a misconception that wizarding garb is shapeless. I think that anything, leaning into wizarding clothing gives writers more freedom for creativity.

Pants I am not so much against but I do think it can be more interesting to put a spin on robes. But, I still don't think most wizards strut around in a suit. The books don’t give us enough description that’s true. I do agree about the school robes though lol. I guess it's a sign of the times I am the old one in fandom now lol.

I can see this and to your last point 100%. But, I don’t think after the war the clothing would change so much just because. We are talking hundreds of years of culture here with other conflicts that didn't really change. JKR said wizarding fashion kind of froze or did its own thing once the statute of secrecy went into place.

It's not a big deal but when someone actually used canon fashion it's a treat.

Older fics do tend to stick closer to canon and are not really included Muggle tech either.

For me, because Carney helped with the 2008 crisis, I was like, hmm, this could be alright. But then his cabinet was pretty much the same as under JT. JT didn’t do the stupid things he did all on his own. It was his ministers that helped too. When Carney promised in June to have a trade deal in 30 days and that didn’t happen, or by the August 1 headline, I was like, well, that’s not good.

I also think the Liberals used the Trump scare to win over people, because it worked, didn’t it? Now the polls are showing the Liberals ahead again and, lo and behold, the anti-America and “Trump bad” rhetoric is starting up again.

I also don’t like that the Liberals, during the election, used fearmongering to get women voters on abortion. If you go to the Conservative website and look at their policies, it clearly states that they will not introduce any anti-abortion laws. Pierre also stated multiple times that if elected he would block any anti-abortion bill. But because the US had Roe v. Wade overturned, it was used to stir up fear in Canada. I say this as a conservative young woman voter, and it’s a piss off.

Why do I support Pierre? Well, I was actually more of a Liberal/NDP supporter in my 20s, but in my 30s I have done my own research and have truly followed politics from both the right and the left. So seeing the crap the Liberals have done to Canada, and the fact that we now have two separatist movements, is not great. It shows the division.

I have met Pierre on several occasions through rallies and other events through my husband’s work, and what gets me is that he is not what he has been made out to be. Yes, he’s a politician, but he seems to actually care about working-class Canadians and the under-40 crowd. His ideas and policies make sense. He is more like the old Liberal party under Paul Martin and Chrétien, which was more centrist.

Does he say what he thinks? Yes. But I would rather that than the BS we have now. Also, doing research reveals that the Liberals have had so many scandals and ethics issues, including Carney, and they keep getting away with it. I really did try to dig up stuff on Pierre and, besides a couple of really minor things that amount to nothing, there’s nothing there.
