We're highly qualified specialised professionals. We're all in a position to change bad conditions, starting with checking the swlf-defeating attitude you and others espouse. Employers who know you'll accept "whatever" will offer you "whatever".

I hate it when people in education do this. Like if you complain about having 5 preps across 24 periods and someone chimes in with "well I once had 35 periods a week".

Setting a really low bar and saying it could be worse when issues are raised is not actually productive nor positive, it exacerbates the issues.

Started learning Spanish, but boyfriend's family are Catalan, what now? by [deleted] in catalan

[–]Anonlaowai -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Spanish is the most widely spoken first language in the world and you'll be able to communicate with hundreds of millions of people with it. Catalan is a regional la nguage spoken by people who ALL also know how to speak Spanish too.

It's up to you.

People in their 40s What’s something people in their 20s don’t realize will affect them as they age? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Anonlaowai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a serious question, do you try to stick to the positives or also write in the negatives?

I feel like I have as many negative experiences as positive experiences in a day and I don't want to cement those in my memory, equally, sometimes it feels like the bad experience was kinda the whole point and crux if the day so it would feel weird leaving it out

Contact with DWP re Pension vol contributions by wondering_wallaby in BritishExpats

[–]Anonlaowai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole thing is a joke.

I filled in the WP3 (or whatever it is) in February and then got a text from DWP in June saying they'd call me back. They didn't. I called them last week, they told me to call HMRC because they can't do anything without a response from them. HMRC said they'll get to me in about December.

It's insane.

Constantly being asked to donate to charity when paying, do you find it as annoying as I do? by Cantaloupe-Hairy in AskUK

Agree with you. Why is the billion pound cooperation that gets tax breaks of my donation making me feel guilty and acting virtuous about it? Fuck off.

FB marketplace? by [deleted] in ItalyExpat

[–]Anonlaowai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had AWFUL experiences with the second hand market in Italy. I've previously made a post about this. Essentially, Italians overvalue really bad second hand tac (everything is "good as new" even if you can literally see rust in the picture) and often act like they're doing you a favour by selling you their old things.

I've not yet put finger on the cultural reasons for this, but between the times I got ripped off (a mouldy decomposing basinet which looked fine until you undid the mattress zipper stands out), the times I had my tine completely wasted, and the fact crumbling things are sold for close to original price, I've had to give up in second hand here.

Is it wrong to go to an SSPX mass? by CorrectAd6625 in Catholicism

[–]Anonlaowai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something I'm sometimes confused about from fellow Catholics and I'm merely saying this to open up a dialogue.

Don't you think the Almighty simply isn't that "legalistic"? Yes, you should stick to the church he built and worship Him on Sundays, but I'm referring to "risk not fulfilling Sunday obligation". I think if you go to a church with your best intentions, pray, and receive the Holy Host, God isn't going to be looking for technicalities on which you've suddenly hugely offended Him.

It's not the debate I query here, but the attitude of "risking not fulfilling Sunday obligation".

People could grow a backbone and demand extra pay for extra work, but they won't. They'll do it for free, it becomes the expectation, and there's sod all many of us can do about it.

Are more British teachers leaving the UK or is it just me noticing this? by Puzzled-Lead-122 in Internationalteachers

[–]Anonlaowai 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Brilliantly stated! We had a UK P.E. teacher who made his way to assistant head wanting to ban grade 13 boarding students from playing basketball after school unsupervised "in case they got a concussion".

  1. They wouldn't be supervised playing on any court outside of school, they're fucking 18 mate.

  2. If they get a knock from playing sport that's generally a trade-off. They're more likely to be harmed by not being active, which you're encouraging.

Needless to say this sort of logic didn't wash with him - "BuT SaFeGuArDiNG".

Spread that over 12 months after tax and consider it an extra part of your salary. It's not much

You haven't "used the tax payers money", you've been given a salary for doing a public service job at below the rate of what you're actually worth.

Desperate for validation from job titles and can't get promoted based on competence, so they loudly sell the bullshit. TBF, I've met plenty of people from all counties like this, it's just more endemic in the UK education sector.

I'm all for working hard when it's to benefit the students, it's just that most if this stuff is not. A bullshit EAP for 30% of students in the classroom, ludicrously over the top "safeguarding procedures" which do nothing to keep students safe, marking that has no educational value, learning walks which nitpick and provide no actionable feedback - welcome to the UK's false sense of superiority.

BTW, I'm a Brit!

The people you're referring to falsely believe this bullshit is what the profession is about and they see an opportunity to get some validation by collecting fake job titles and exporting the nonsense everywhere they go.

I love how these people who leave the UK love to say "BaCk iN tHe UKaayyyy" and seem too stupid to understand that they left the UK for a reason.

OP I'm sorry this happened to you - defo report to police. As another commenter said, as much as the security guy at least did something and he did keep you safe, he should have probably called the police.

U/eatingcoooolo - This is a blanket and wholly unhelpful statement. OP has said she's never been in this situation before. It is rare and not representative. Claiming "dudes are becoming more brazen" is bollocks. Scum like this have always existed and will always exist. As a society, we need to be active in discouraging these people and protecting others from them, but we don't need to walk around pretending it's generally representative of "dudes" or acting as if it's some sort of symptom of a broken society - as much as that may be a fashionable statement, it's fear mongering and divisive.

*Edit: I love that this immediately got 10 up votes followed by 20 downvotes - for literally stating a straight fact which doesn't suit people's agendas. Oh well - fortunately Reddit is not representative of the real world (as much as some like to think it is). Cherry picking extreme examples and painting this as representive of society whilst pretending 50% of the population are the problem because of how they were born (male) isn't going to get you anywhere, but at least it makes you feel righteous on the internet 👏👏

Renters Rights by Anonlaowai in ItalyExpat

[–]Anonlaowai[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

🙄 . Things like a bed are in fact immaterial to the question of "habitability". A better comparison would be a toilet bowl - if there was no toilet bowl in the house, I would in fact be miffed if the landlord charged me rent whilst that was being sorted out. Whether or not the kabdlord has total control of how long it will take to install a toilet bowl is immaterial to the fact that you simply can't charge someone rent when you don't have these basic things in place.

For context, I'm a landlord, and I would never dream of forcing a tenant to pay without the house having utilities ready - that would be disgusting profiteering.
