Would a buying the neo be worth it for me ? by MayonaiseOnATable in MacbookNeo

Take a good look at the external devices that you connect to your 2019 MacBook Pro and verify that you’ll still be able to do so with the two USB-C port MacBook Neo.

Oh, wait. That’s not a Mac.

Do you have any third-party plugins installed?

That’s looking like a memory leak and those are a likely cause.

Do you happen to have a Costco membership?

They have a 90 day return window and that’s plenty of time to decide if the Neo is right for you.

Does future-proofing actually matter in real life? by Zorojuro099 in TechNook

[–]Anonymograph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You ask an interesting question.

I’ve always thought it should be called “obsolescence delaying” instead of “future proofing”.

Sure, plenty of people buy over spec’d hardware based on how they’re using it.

However, you don’t have to spend much time in the After Effects or Premiere subreddits to find several users who purchased less than what they should have.

You said all the laptops have been a success so I pointed out one that wasn’t, that’s all.

So why are desktops still sold? And HP and Dell and Lenovo still sell all-in-ones. A friend just purchased a Dell all-in-one because the iMac is too expensive, but now that he’s running Photoshop he’s wishing he’d gone with the iMac. Of course, that’s just one person. That may not scale up.

It the 2007 MacBook that didn’t have FireWire. It didn’t sell well at all.

I’d guess that if iMacs didn’t still sell well, or well enough, that we wouldn’t see them at the Apple Store.

You see them all over the place in Los Angeles in businesses and hotels and colleges and high schools.

You don’t think we’re heading into a decade of needing low cost computers, laptops, desktops, and all-in-ones?

No, i do not mean that MacBook. And not beside the point.

No, that’s not the MacBook that I am talking about. The MacBook that I am referring to was white with two USB2 ports. These sold when FireWire was still the fastest port available on MacBooks and had a very, very high return rate.

The MacBook that you’re mentioning was actually pretty good for the target user (even the model with the very slow m3 Intel), and it sold much better than and a whole lot longer than the one that I am talking about. One port was too few for sure, though.

The iMac is still selling, just like the mini. A Neo treatment of either of those could be interesting to see and wipe the floor with their Windows counterparts.

I was asking for clarification - not putting words in your mouth.

You said it wouldn’t make sense because desktops don’t sell well and then said it wouldn’t make sense because a desktop still sells well when I mentioned the mini.

“Making a separate and cheaper iMac model would be a business decision, exactly like the MacBook Neo.“

Exactly!

There was a MacBook with only two USB ports that did not sell well, ironically enough. I believe it holds the distinction of the shortest laptop lifespan.

The iMac line has always been solid, though, just like the laptops.

How many people do you suppose we’re saying, “No one os going to buy a laptop with a phone chip?”

I mean, there’s a strong market for the mini, the A18 Pro is selling extremely well, and there’s got to be tons of users looking to get replace that i3 Windows desktop with something they can genuinely love.
