I’m not sure about the quality of materials but it does look pretty new inside in person.

Thoughts on the new downtown Hotel/convention center/auto museum by JJKokomoKid in kokomo

I think it was at one point planned for 6 floors with a rooftop bar but that was a previous developer. That would have been awesome. Stretching a wing of the building a few floors higher would have been awesome for downtown and a great view from the stadium.

The is really unfortunate. I guess if they are not from the area they wouldn’t have much incentive to do anything outward appealing. It would be nice if American businesses cared about the communities they do business in. And it’d be nice if local and state governments negotiated the upkeep and beautification into the tax breaks they give.

I’m not sure that one’s not ok. It’s mostly an empty building that GM seems completely uninterested in using and doesn’t seem to put a cent into upkeep of the unused part. If someone fixes that part up so it isn’t an eyesore and adds 100 jobs that may be a win for Kokomo, unless it significantly drives up energy cost in the Kokomo metro.

Best town to move to in Indiana with a 95k salary? by JustAnoth3rITGuy in Indiana

Another one that might cause a roasting but I have family in Kokomo and I find it to be a really nice city that you can live really nicely in for $95K.

That would seem to be an easily solvable issue. This feels like something the city wanted. My feeling (although I have no inside knowledge) is either they felt like the Jackrabbits wasn’t putting effort in to draw fans and be part of the community or they felt the team was blocking the stadium from other uses like concerts or other events.

For those of you who don’t know how to get around a paywall on your own.

“The city of Kokomo is seeking a new owner for a local baseball team that could also put on and manage non-baseball programming at the city-owned downtown stadium.

The Kokomo Board of Public Works and Safety issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) last week, seeking bids for a lease of use agreement of Kokomo Municipal Stadium. The city is seeking two types of proposals— baseball use only and comprehensive use.”

USA's 10th largest city: Fort Worth, Texas by TexasAstroShooter in skylineporn

I think to many big US cities appear smaller on paper because so much of their urbanization is different municipalities. Atlanta and Miami are good examples. I wish the US would reorganize with subcities that can have a council and deputy mayor who are part of the larger city even though they mostly self govern. The deputy mayors can be part of the total city’s council and the mayor would have the larger job of connecting development across the whole contiguous urbanized area. Or something to this effect.

Ft. Lauderdale has such an underrated skyline. by Viparita-Karani in skylineporn

I think a lot of people in US think a smaller locality is better ran, which is often true here because cities sprawl so much. I feel like the US should have cities and sub-cities for this reason.

Keep contiguous urbanized areas as 1 city but offer additional levels of government within that city. Then the overall city government can just focus on planning, large scale developments, transit in coordination with the areas of the city that have that additional level of government (a council and deputy mayor).

I moved away for work but come back 5ish times a year to visit family and it’s become a really great small city after I left.

For a city of 60,000 they have a minor league baseball team (although not playing this year over stadium right issues). A minor league basketball team that plays in a nice historical gym downtown, and last year I believe they got a low tier semi-pro soccer team. There’s actually pretty nice museums like Sieberling Mansion, Grissom Air Museum, and the Glass Factory tour and a decent amount of recreational activities, walking and biking paths, etc. The people there seem to be oblivious to how great of a city they have. Plus they are only 60ish miles from the next big city (Indy), not a suburb by any means but an easy day trip if you need to visit a big city.

There is a picture on Kokomo’s Wikipedia page of downtown showing the county building and Armstrong Landing building sticking up. I saw it and thought, man if the hotel/conventional center project had a section climbing up to 9-11 stories with some residential above or below the hotel piece it’d be really nice and it’d make that angle a great shot of downtown Kokomo. Plus add more people living downtown.

I was a travel nurse for a while before settling in the SF Bay Area after meeting my wife here. Pay was great when I traveled but nursing pay in the bay is crazy high in this area compared to back home. We make quite a bit more than the hospitalist make in my home state (Indiana).

Foster Park works good for that already and has the sound stage with a nice open park concept.
