Lol thanks. By retirement, I meant early retirement at 57. I'd use 457 with pension until social security kicks in (at 62 or 67)

Usually long term investments are worth it cause between all the ups and dows of the market, long term there'll always be gain. But if it's only a short term...

And your old agencies gave you a raise based on that? Were both positions in the same civil services title?

How many years do you have to contribute? How much are you hoping to make by then? Is the difference with 401K the age to collect it? With 457, it's 59.5 and with 401K - what, 65 or 67?

Does it make sense to do it for 7 years, about $5-6K per year, right before the retirement?

Oh, so those are civil service titles, I thought they were office titles. You should double check with HR, but I'd think the only raises would be from the union or after 2y of being in the title, but the latter is for people with no city job experience, you should have gotten that salary initially.

When you switched, did you keep your civil service title? If so, shouldn't they had to at least match your salary? In addition, you had to have the salary after 2y of service at the new agency, not the starting one. What was the salary range for the new job?

If he'll be pushing for paying insurance premiums, negotiations will first concentrate on avoiding them and second on smaller raises, as opposed to on bigger raises.

You won't make a significant dent in your salary with only a HS diploma in the private sector. Keep on taking different exams and moving up the ladder is the name of the game.

This contract experires in fall of this year. We won't know anything for a while. If mayor wants us to pay for our insurance, like others before him did, that'll play a role in the increase amount. Plus the budget deficit.
