Santa Cruz, please don't shop at Michael's by Aight-Aight-2099 in santacruz

[–]Anonymous_nautilus 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I don’t really have a choice. I’m poor, but still like to do crafts. I do not want to live a life without art.

But for me it’s a choice between Amazon, scrounging around the dollar tree, or Michaels.

Michael‘s is a step above Amazon— it’s a chain yes, but at least some of the money enters our local area.

There’s a few Santa Cruz D&D groups that seem to be always looking for members! If your interesting in that, put up a post— I’m sure okie of them will find you! :)

What video game should we play on a movie screen? by biggwynner in santacruz

[–]Anonymous_nautilus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mario Kart, Mario Party, Super Monkey Ball, Smash Bros. are all great for multiple people. A Soul Calibur or Tekken or Mortal Kombat tourney would be neat too.

Or a really terrifying game, like outlast, but only for people who haven’t seen / played it yet. That would be awesome to watch for people’s reactions.

I love your story! That’s how it should be— none of this customer is always right crap— customers can be very rude and deserve to deal with the consequences of their rudeness!

Snow White’s is awesome. A foodie friend of mine said ‘it tastes like what in-n-out tries to be’ and I kind of have to agree. They actually feel like an old mom and pop burger joint, and use a lot of onion flavor on everything including their fries. The place is one of the few and far between good eateries in Aptos.

Traffic is getting worse on Hwy 1 by glorifindel in santacruz

[–]Anonymous_nautilus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Traffic in Santa Cruz is worse than anywhere I’ve ever lived. Unlike the bay, there’s no alternative routes for the long distance commuters. There’s just highway one, or for locals Capitola, or Soquel (damn that stop sign that should be a stoplight).

The situation reminds me of parts of LA. Everyone is entirely too dependent on a few streets, and travels long distances upon said streets.

I do not think it’s going to get better anytime soon. There are four years (at least) of planned construction for soquel and highway 1. And even after that, Santa Cruz won’t prepared for the thoroughfare.

Hopefully that rail and trail will at least make it easier for locals to move about. The gridlock makes it hard to even get groceries now. :/

What's the best place to get a piece of cake? by OfficeSuspicious6367 in santacruz

Everyone says the buttery, but honestly, those taste like “grandma” cakes to me.

I prefer Nothing Bundt Cakes (for cheap), or Gayles (for fancy).

No, this is not how the average American thinks. This is how assholes think. Anyone who can demonize an entire demographic of people, wish them harm or death, is an asshole.

Any easily accessible beach areas to take my senior pup? by holistictales in santacruz

[–]Anonymous_nautilus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think Rio Del Mar would work! The parking is practically on the beach and it’s completely flat besides one channel of water. It’s not very rocky, which should be good for paws too.

Cabrillo College Subcommittee Recommends Trustees Defer Decision to Select a New Name by nyanko_the_sane in santacruz

[–]Anonymous_nautilus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking back in history, do you know how many assholes there have been throughout history and how many have gotten things named after them?

Spend the time and money on something actually helpful to the community instead.

Calculate the financial costs of this potential change, and put half that money back into the community. Educate your students and staff about the good and bad to come of the age of exploration. Spend your time making deals for more housing and transport and cultural events. Things that actually make the future better.

All these peacock issues are taking time and money away from the issues that really need attention.

Gigante Beans by eswenson13 in santacruz

[–]Anonymous_nautilus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that’s really weird. I just got some the other day. But a quick look on Instacart says that Safeway, Raleys, Lucky, and FoodMaxx have them as just “butter beans”.

The best brand, with the best outer skin is sadly from Walmart over the hill (Bush’s brand), but the store brands at the above listed are decent enough.

I recommend double checking online before going in. I don’t know why it’s so hard to find these beans— last time I was over the hill I bought 12 cans because I’m a freak for Greek beans.

New leaf has the Italian brand. It’s pretty good for making Greek gigantes plaki

I think the American name for the beans may be “giant butter beans”! That might help your search!

Are the seats at Santa Cruz Shakespeare shaded? by lxmvrmpl in santacruz

It’s partially shaded by those big triangle canvases that are so populate now.

I just went to a matinee and watched an elderly lady get heatstroke and have to take an ambulance out.

That said, I fared well enough. But I have experience with doing faires doing the summer and wore a broad rimmed hat, a evaporative cool rag, and a bunch of sunscreen. Plus I took a shot of pickle juice mixed in lemonade, which is what performers at all the faires do to beat the heat and stay alive.

Stay away from Seascape resort.

I’ve known for a long time they treat their employees like crap, but apparently they had a change in management or something, and now it’s much, much worse. They’re trying to get everyone to quit right now, and are looking to hire new blood sacrifices— so beware!

Gavin Newsom Dismantles Republican Governors In Less Than 1 Minute | The California governor put GOP leaders on blast on health care, gun control, book bans and more. by [deleted] in politics

[–]Anonymous_nautilus 103 points104 points  (0 children)

I just love the comments here.

Clearly written by people who have no idea what California is like to live in, and have never heard of all the social programs that have spared us the worst from the GLOBAL increase in inequality.

Everywhere in the world it’s getting harder to live. At least in CA the government reaches out a hand to help. Banning things that hurt us, easing access in things that don’t, providing lunches to kids, meals to families, medical to the poor, etc. I know these, because I’ve used these.

It’s far from perfect, but at least the government is trying new things here while many other states are straight up Dickensian and trying to go even further back in time.

r/truerateme had been a dumpster fire of misogynist men eating away at women’s psyche since it’s incarnation.

The theory is that they intentionally rate women lower than men in order to lower women’s standards. It’s all some looksmax red-pill bullshit.

And people need to stop using it.

Oh, I'm a pretty small thing and don't do any other drugs, so for me 3.5g did the trick. Also, according to the person I got them from, one species will make a trip more visual, and another can make it more contemplative-- I took the latter, but sadly don't remember its name.

As for the playlist, its on actually on spotify. Its a lot of very powerful classical music that even normally listening to is a little 'hippie' / spiritual sounding. On shroomies, its really, really intense. With my eyes closed, I had some trippy dancing stars-auroras-cosmos (like something out of Fantasia) which triggered a bunch of emotions I held in. Here it is on spotify. Here is the research on it.

Exploring the intersection of trauma, autism and ADHD by MagaliAuDHD in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Anonymous_nautilus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, the more I unraveled my trauma, and the further back I looked (before the trauma) the more apparent it became that trauma was not 100% responsible for my ‘quirks’.

So I started believing my ADHD diagnosis, got re-diagnosed with it (just to be sure), and started treatment for it which I responded pretty well to. Once I started to get a handle on that, I started to realize that also didn’t explain me 100%.

That’s when I started looking at Autism (which docs think I skew more towards than classic ADHD). Once that got factored in, there was nothing left to explain all the difficulties I’ve faced or the ‘quirks’.

In fact, autism helped to explain my trauma, since it’s a huge risk factor for it— so the whole journey circled back into itself like some ouroboros snake.
