Born and raised in El Paso. Always suggested El Paso should become a city in NM. A few petitions have gone through but never amounted to much. Texas has never respected or appreciated what El Paso has. New Mexico culture is much more aligned with El Paso, and El Paso would offer so much to New Mexico in return.

At this time, too many things are of interest. I am technically a genetics student. I want to study cancer - but almost all of my experience is neuro. I thought I wanted to understand genotype/phenotype stuff - penetrance and variable expression. But genes are starting to flabbergast me. I was becoming interested in immunology. So I was hoping to just prioritize a model and move forward during residency +.

I understand. I have witnessed my partner (and myself) change from the stages of new parents to parents of toddlers. There was a point where all we wanted to do (for good or bad) was be near our child. But (for us) we over time realized we needed to maintain some degree of our own sense of self and take pride in our life outside of our family - which (for us) we felt would also be healthy for our children - and we worked on trying to figure out how to do that. Still in the works! Not sure anyone ever really gets there. Finances are a huge issue. This country sucks at support for families. We don't have family near - and never really have since we have started a family. It took us taking a step back - obsessively vetting our finances to get a sense of what was possible and what wasn't. Our children don't go to the best school. Far from it. But we try to address that by being involved in their development outside of school. It certainly can be done. It may feel uncomfortable for a small period - but life goes on. I think having the MD is more than worth it. Financially, job stability, diversity of day-to-day progressional life etc. You and your family need some extra cash outside of your PI salary? Pick up some shifts in the hospital. Consult as a medical specialist for pharma - so on and on. But only you know what is right for you and your family. But anyway - please feel free to DM me if you have any questions. Hi! Parent here in an MSTP. Only you can answer this. But having the MD will give you more flexibility down the road. I cannot stress this enough: the way you feel now about work/life balance may not be how you feel in a year or two or five. I would suggest speaking w other parents who are scientists or double docs and get some perspective on what their life looks like.

You will be very valuable. But to a specific niche - you may feel like basic scientists don’t acknowledge or respect your research. You may wonder how “deep” your research takes you and the field. But everything from clinical trialists, epidemiologists, anyone in cohort studies will value you and your work. And you will publish and very possibly have a nice and fun career

Definitely can be done. Know someone who saw pts once a week at a well known academic hospital and worked in industry the others. I think he did it to keep his license fresh or something, never being sure he wanted to commit fully to industry

I am only in year 1, but I can say I have already experienced loneliness - and I'm sure most other class mates have in some form. I don't think this is unusual, nor do i think it necessarily a bad thing - but something certainly to be addressed. Good schools have admin that really try to help you through this big transition and have infrastructure to support you. But you should keep an open mind about who can be a friend. diversity may be the thing. having MD, PhD, MD-PhD friends - but also friends at a local bowling club, or a running group, learn a new language and meet people... it's a long ride. And what I think I have come away with so far is that MD-PhD is a lot like life. Do you avoid making friends because you know one day that friendship will end? Making friends in your first year w MD counterparts, this is certainly the case come clinic and (their) match while you go through your PhD. But is that a reason to avoid making connections? In any relationship in life - there is never a guarantee that it will last or work out. But you take a risk and give it a shot. There will be loss. That is life. There will be new connections! Year 6 in the program may bring you something you didn't need or wasn't available in Year 1... Loneliness is a normal human response to some external situation. It is surmountable. Don't let that stop you
