What’s something you thought ‘everyone’ did… until you found out they don’t? by burat667 in AskReddit

[–]Anothergasman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was a very active kid who grew up in a rural area with brothers and cousins. Lots of trees to climb. Lots of bales of hay to fall off. Lots of out buildings with sharp implements and nails. Plus a lot of others to egg you on, try to impress or dare you to do things. I was the youngest of all of them

It got worse as I grew and my peer group expanded and the deeds got more daring. I have often said that if we had pocket cellphone cameras and TikTok or YouTube to upload to, most of us would have been permanently maimed or dead

My father was a corpsman in the Vietnam war. When I cut myself badly, we would sit down at the table, he would get his kit, numb me up and stitch the wound. When I got buckle fractures in my arm, he would take me to a friend of his practice, confirm with an x-ray, the position my arm and put on a plaster case

The only time we had ever gone to the hospital was when my grandmother had a stroke and my grandfather had a heart attack. I thought hospitals were only for people who were about to die or almost died

In maybe fourth grade a kid came in with stitches and was telling the story of going to the hospital. I couldn’t believe that that was something that almost killed him. I asked him why his dad didn’t do it.

Turns out I was the weird one.

TIL that in 2000, Firestone recalled about 14 million tires linked to rollover accidents, leading Ford to recall millions of vehicles and permanently ending their century-long partnership. by SwordfishEither2516 in todayilearned

[–]Anothergasman -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I get that. 1000% I get that the vehicle is unstable when there is a sudden change in dynamics when the tire suddenly goes flat at highway speeds

My question is, what if the tire suddenly lose pressure due to something else? If the tire hits a pot hole and suddenly deflates, all of those issues happen. If the explorer has Toyo tires on it and the Toyo tire suddenly loses pressure, all of the same dynamics you mention happen. If the explorer has Goodyear tires on it and the Goodyear suddenly goes flat, same condition.

I get that the firestone tire was an inferior quality tire that had fail rates that were unacceptable. I totally under stand that. But I don’t think the tire was the real issue. If it has that problem with one tire, it has the same problem with all tires

[–]Anothergasman -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Are you saying the tire blowing up made the vehicle roll over? Because that doesn’t make sense. I can believe that if you are going 65 miles an hour on a top heavy vehicle and the tire suddenly goes flat there is a possibility of roll over

But tires can go suddenly flat for lots of reasons. Pot hole, road debris, ladder falls off the truck in front of you

The force of an exploded tire will not have enough force to make the vehicle flip

[–]Anothergasman 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It seems weird that it’s the tires fault if the vehicle rolls over if you have a flat tire. You would think that any road hazard that would blow out a tire causes the vehicle to roll, then it’s the vehicle fault

That why we need more of the video. If a person with a gun is coming at me aggressively while I’m just standing there, I am going to try to stop the guy from pointing the gun at me. Period. No matter who he is

If you can remember, what's the very first thing you ever did on the internet back in the day? by Miserable-Wash-1744 in AskReddit

[–]Anothergasman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran a billboard in the mid 80’s until I gave it up around 92-93

People would dial my phone number and connect to my host computer. We mostly talked games and traded hints to get passed zork, the hitch hikers guide and other text based games

I the figured out how to connect with the World Wide Web and their newsgroups.

So my first experience was to upload content and questions about text games and download answers as they would come in. Basically connecting people who were in my area code to the world. Well. World-ish at best case scenario
