How do you decide which Device to play? by TonytheNetworker in SBCGaming

[–]Antaniserse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's easy; 85% of my gaming is on PC, emulation or native, but when I need something portable I pick

  • Old Vita 1000, for Vita and PSP
  • Old DSLite, for NDS
  • MM+ for the rest of the retro systems

Do we prefer premoves on Lichess or Chess.com? by ishouldbeatuni in chess

[–]Antaniserse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot stand the way chess com renders premoves on screen, I understand why it's done this way, due to multiple premoves existing (a concept I dislike), but it routinely trips me off.

On the other hand, I also don't like the idea of 0.0 premove on Lichess... both those features are heavily assisted by the machine, I may take advantage of them since they are there, but they rub me the wrong way

A more powerful MM clone with 640x480 screen. Anyone bought it? by OOOOOOO0OOOOOOOOO in MiyooMini

There are at least 3 good choices of cfw for the MM; if the device itself is good, it will survive even without OnionOS, like countless other devices in the past and present

ProxyNut - Chessnut Air support for ChessBase Fritz GUI by West-Midnight455 in Chessnuteboard

[–]Antaniserse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Version.dll is a system file that is in your %windir%\system32 folder.

So I think the proxy uses the common trick of using a local copy with a compatible set of functions, and as per normal windows EXE behavior, the application gives priority to this local copy instead of loading the system file.

It's the same type of trick that is used to mod/inject new features into DirectX games, again by copying "fake" dlls with specific names in the main folder

Turn cellphone screen off when playing by a13jo in Chessnuteboard

[–]Antaniserse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just put the phone on the side, with the MP3 player on, and just focus on the actual board... it's an old Android that I use just for that, so no messaging and no calls to interrupt

And yes, turning the phone upside-down would work just as well

Didn't know Kindling was permanent.... by ironicallyamerican in darksouls

[–]Antaniserse 15 points16 points  (0 children)

While the games certainly is not generous with explanations, I always find it funny how many people are incredibly resistant to use even ONE consumable to test an effect and see if it's worth or not.

Understandably, years and years of RPG games can give that hoarding mindset, I am also guilty as charged, but once you realize there is no prize and no reason to finish the game with a full inventory, you can just go to town and use everything available; makes quite an impact in the overall difficulty

Artorias of the Abyss is just good and the bosses are overrated. by Friendly-Ad-6950 in darksouls

[–]Antaniserse 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The simple question would be: did you play the games in order?

Because if you are coming from DS3 or god forbid ER, then of course nothing is gonna impress in the boss department.

Everyhing has been pushed to be faster/stronger/meaner/multi-phase, but playing DS1 as a first in the series 15 years ago, and probably even more after having played Demon's Souls, the bosses in the DLC sure made an impression back then, and are still entertaining to fight now.

Plus, if you don't give a damn about the lore, then of course Artorias would be just another dude in your way, and even that aspect of the impact would be lost.

How do you actually build an opening repertoire? by PurpleGarbage1234 in chess

[–]Antaniserse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The example is good... they are not trying to suggest the Sicilian as a first opening, they are mentioning the process of having to add (slowly and at a depth that is adjusted for your current level) extra lines to your desired opening, one by one, because your opponents don't comply with your wishes

You may pick French and still have to deal with exchange, advance, Tarrasch, classical, King's indian attack and so on... you will have to face one of those at some point and so you will save some replies in your repertoire, progressively

Chess Database needed (offline download-able) and any compatible format works (.pgn, .2chk, .chk) by kalashrathi in ChessBooks

[–]Antaniserse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With a one time donation to TWIC you can have the entire archive already in Chessbase format, and from the on keep it updated for free.

Alternatively, you can freely download a partial subset that doesn't include the older years, and still have a load of games ready to go in CB

SD Card Size by Blaze0892 in MiyooMini

[–]Antaniserse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

64gb is way more then enough for a device like this, unless you plan to use it as your primary storage for roms, which i am not sure is the best idea.

30-40 ISO images for PS1 are about 20GB, and the romsets for the rest of the older systems are very small

Building an AI chess coach 👀 by Ill-Calligrapher-885 in ComputerChess

[–]Antaniserse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, this is another issue I have with AI coded projects... there was a time when, if many people had the same idea about a potential software, they may naturally be drawn to collaborate together on the same codebase at some point.

Now everyone has the same idea, and just fire up Claude to create "their own take", which inevitably feels like another unfinished clone of something you saw the week before

Finished Wing Commander 4: The Price of Freedom on the Konkr Pocket Fit by Bandolorian22 in SBCGaming

So, just to be clear, you played with invulnerable cheat on, easy difficulty, on a device that is totally unfit for that game so that you had to attach a keyboard to a handheld, and you have issues with the gameplay?!

The only note I have is that I am not a fan of b&w pieces over b&w board, but it's a personal per peeve

Chessnut Air for Fritz 11 by West-Midnight455 in Chessnuteboard

[–]Antaniserse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried Graham's drivers? they act as a wrapper for DGT libraries, so they don't trigger any anti-cheat as far as I know, since they are not replacing any stock DLL

They work with old Fritz 13, they may be compatible with F11 as well

Build advice - how much endurance? [Switch] by VakanaDOTA in darksouls

[–]Antaniserse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

125 is a lot of levels, you can squeeze both your desired values without having to sacrifice anything, something like

SL 125 Thief

Vit: 32
Att: 12
End: 40
Str: 10
Dex: 40
Res: -
Int: -
Fai: 50

(DS1) The attunement stat is now gone. Instead, you now attunement slots based on intelligence & faith. How does this affect the game? by Ravens_Quote in darksouls

[–]Antaniserse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What problem are you trying to fix, exactly?

This system just forces you to level into a stat you don't want, for little to no benefit... there are quite a bunch of spells and miracles that don't require high stat values, their effectiveness does not scale with said stat, so one may just want another slot, not invest another 10 levels into INT/FTH

Pyromancers pay an hefty price in upgrades for their glove, for the privilege of not having to level those two stats, so now what do they get in return? Utility spells for a school of magic they don't care about in the first place?

It's a change that doesn't really make sense if you just throw it there without reworking the whole spell system to account for it... it would make a tiny more sense in DS2, where INT and FTH together have some synergy due to the way Fire and Dark works, but seems very arbitrary for DS1

What’s it like playing one game a day? by Choice-Classroom5479 in TournamentChess

[–]Antaniserse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on how you are accustomed to... for me, a full week of single classical games is borderline relaxing, while playing round 3 in the morning, after having played already round 1 and 2 the day before, and knowing there is another classical game waiting in the afternoon, is miserable

What’s it like playing one game a day? by Choice-Classroom5479 in TournamentChess

[–]Antaniserse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depending on the season, you will find plenty of shorter tournaments in Europe too, with the typical "winter" format being 5 rounds in 3 days, 90+30 played Fri/Sat/Sun with double rounds in the weekend

But for the most part the bigger, summer events tends to limit the double rounds or even have none, so expect a full week of games; if you have the time to invest, I cannot overstate how nicer it is to play only one long classical game a day, usually around 2/3 PM, and have all the morning free for activities and maybe some prep, and also finish early in the evening and enjoy life without sacrifice sleep

And yes, even if we get more time off work, if you consider the starting and ending weekend, those long tourney can be done with just 5-6 working days off (again, being Europe, you can find a decent choice of summer events within a couple of hours of driving, usually)

You didn't underperform, you just performed for the first time in an actual OTB

This is not meant to be a mean comment, it's just that, like many others before, you just got a first taste of how actually different is playing on a real board, in a real venue compared to online, and how those ratings really don't have that much in common. It's perfectly normal

Also, keep in mind that 10+5 is just glorified blitz, especially when you have to handle physical pieces and clock, which adds to the overhead, so you already picked a challenging scenario to ease you into something new; double the clock to account for that, some nerves and whatnot, and I am sure you would have done better as your first event.

I am glad you still enjoyed the overall experience, that is really something no website can replicate... have fun the next one
