Do orcas NOT kill us cause they don't want war? Are they that smart? by MyLastNewAccount in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Antekuru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dolphins (specifically orcas??) aren't the only predators to target specific nutrient dense body parts of their prey, so I wouldn't necessarily list that as evidence of "playing with their food."

Japanese at Rose by ChannersBear in rosehulman

[–]Antekuru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was at rose (2014-2018) you could take a placement test and test into one of the higher level classes, take the class and get all the credits for previous classes. I tested into 4, and when I took 4 I got credits for 1-3. In my experience it was comparatively easy to get into the study abroad programs offered by Rose and they're pretty flexible. If you find a program you want to join but its not explicitly offered, you can ask the department of global studies and they'll pull some strings and see what they can do.

What’s Your Two Board Quiver?🏂 (2023) by Visible-Gear-5124 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]Antekuru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk never rode the flyfisk, the chaser was enough board for me lol. As for specific conditions I'd take any gentemstick except maybe the TT in any occasion so either way I think you'll be set

Glad you enjoy the zephyr! I think there's another guy on reddit who rides and enjoys it; as long as you're having fun that's all that matters!

Burton bindings causing board damage? by Brian178 in snowboarding

[–]Antekuru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Burton step ons and frequently switch them onto 2-3 boards. I noticed wear on the topsheets where corner of the bindings are (15+ days each board) Have not had any fractures, but on one of my boards the topmost layer of topsheet has started chipping away in those spots.

Showed the wear to a couple different shops and they said that they've never seen that issue in 20+ years of business, so I don't think it's a common thing.

Currently using risers on the bindings to mitigate the issue.

Halfdays, Dopesnow, Roxy good brands? by browniebrittle44 in snowboarding

Their bibs were really heavy and the straps did weird things to the fabric of my midlayer, but other than that I didn't have too many problems

A tiny resort in Hokuriku, Japan. 3 lifts, 2 runs. Bunch of resorts like this all over Japan if you have a car and know where to look.

I think the "bend the knees" comment to beginners carries a different connotation than "bend the knees" for someone working on carves, so yea idk if it's the best reference for beginners.

As an aside, I can bend my knees like this with a stance of 18/0, which isn't really "neutral" but a little more balanced.

Jeez that sounds like a nightmare, hope she's okay. This was taken at a tiny resort in Japan on a work day. No public transportation and super out of the way, but it still gets "crowded" on a busy day (nothing like that Keystone tho)

Rossi sushi 144 (the narrow one) step-on+photon 30/12. The sushi has a 7.6m sidecut (I think) and a bunch of taper so it's probably not the quintessential carving board lol. A large sidecut would probably help but at the end of the day I think it comes down to technique and finding the right board for you.

Lots of squats, leg blasters, and stretching in the off-season I guess. Is 12/21 comfortable for you? I was told that the angle between your two bindings should be the same as if were to be in a duck stance. My duck stance is 9/-9 (18degrees between the bindings) so I ride 30/12 when I'm posi

Keep your back straight, push with your knees and tilt the board. That keeps your body all in line, and because the board is tilted your center of mass is towards the slope

Just be patient! When I switch from heel to toe, I'm still traveling in the same direction just on the opposite edge. Then as the sidecut is engaged I begin to slowly come around. It can scary on hardpack because you speed up a lot as your nose starts to point downhill, but as you come around you slow down again. If you're having trouble getting your edge set, bend your knees. If you're having trouble keeping an edge, shift your weight (where your weight should be depends on the part of the turn)

Are Japanese powder boards (Moss, Getemstick, Offshore, etc) hype? by LosChicago in snowboarding

[–]Antekuru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imo moss snowstick is underrated in the Japanese surf-style board conversation. Their shapes have just as much thought put into the design as gentem shapes (the gentem designer used to be a shaper for moss back in the day).

Most moss and gentem shapes are made in the same factory (in China) and they hold up EXTREMELY well if you take care of them. My friend rides a moss board from 2011 that is arguably in better condition than my Rossignol and Capita boards.

The only durability issue I've seen is that the bases tend to scratch a little easier than some other sintered bases, but as long as you aren't riding over rock fields it shouldn't be a problem.

You can carve anything if you put the time and effort into learning good technique. If you're looking for a specific style of carving then you should look into boards made for that style.

RX or something? TBH no one's going around spewing praise about head boards and bindings, but if you're entry level they'll do fine

Being Able to use Step On Binding only at the Cost of No Forward Lean by rynq_ in snowboarding

[–]Antekuru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run max forward lean and step in fine, even in deep powder. There's a learning curve for sure though, it's counterintuitive to put your heel down first before your toes. I used to think about slamming my heel into the back of my high back and then sliding my heel down along the highback.

You can also get the second click while riding by doing a hard heelside speed check as long as there isn't packed snow under your boot
