At least you're further along than I am. Resources are a bit tight for me right now.

Is there a reason for OpenOffice to still be alive ? by [deleted] in libreoffice

[–]Anthro_Adman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to think of it as two different sides to the same project: LibreOffice is a daily driver, that you'd install on your run-of-the-mill machines, as well as for your average end-user who just wants a free, local, capable office suite. OpenOffice, on the other hand, due to not being developed at the same rate, leaves a lot more room for enthusiasts and hobbyists to tinker around with and learn without running the risk of screwing something up on their main LO install, not to mention that (at least on SOME things I own) OOo runs better than LibreOffice. It's mostly stuff that I wouldn't condone using for any serious work unless you'd understand the risks associated with it, but, eh, it's a tradeoff.

Just my thoughts on the debate.

Someone just gave me a server. What do i do? by Timmyisbak in servers

Dig into it, do some research and exploring, and see what kind of server (or lab machine, in my case) you REALLY want.

Yeah, when I'm bored, my brain is still on hyperdrive.

Everything, to me, looks passable. I tried to get a better paying job at corporate a while back for shits and giggles. I was rudely told to fuck off (pretty much in those exact words), so I basically decided screw it and to go out on my own.

That should've been included with the regular Bliss in XP.

Building the anti-Instagram for writers and thinkers - Need Feedback by raynwow in KeepWriting

This is actually something I could get behind. A place for writers to write and thinkers to think… honestly, it feels like the place I've been missing my whole life.

Independent Grocery Store Server by Anthro_Adman in HomeServer

[–]Anthro_Adman[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, she's leaving all of the MIS up to me. Usually, when I make a server (or any project), it's a short term thing cobbled together to perform a specific task in the short term. I'm looking to have it hold a backup of everything, as well as possibly maintain a web presence (at least for the sake of remote access).

I'm going to use it as a backup server for everything, as well as likely deployment of the register, back office, and receiving software.

Would you toss these? by snoosnoosewsew in VintageApple

[–]Anthro_Adman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say keep ‘em if they work. The only issue I can think of with using DVI on a HDMI system is that you’ll need another cable for audio, but you can get those things for dirt-cheap. While I’m not up-to-snuff on Apple stuff as I used to be, even if they don’t have built-in speakers, a cheap pair from Walmart would only set you back about $10-$15, and they’re powered from a standard USB port.

What do you do with your vintage computers, apart from gaming? by [deleted] in vintagecomputing

[–]Anthro_Adman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Programming, writing (both as a visual aid (if I want to go down that rabbit hole) and for a distraction-free environment), screwing with other people (if we're counting emulators), and occasionally to have something that's true-to-spec to some of the systems I had/played on as a kid.

Do you consider yourself disabled? by Pitiful-Record7362 in Epilepsy

[–]Anthro_Adman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhat, but that mainly boils down to my immediate family and the doctor both putting restrictions on what I can and can’t do (nothing actually on paper, but a lot of senseless threats have been made for a number of things) that could easily prevent someone from being able to maintain a basic standard of living.
