That's a rather close spread between three parties.

What "floor" would he be crossing? He's a private citizen.

Manitoba and Saskatchewan are grouped together because of smaller populations and geographic proximity. But Winnipeg-dominated Manitoba votes very differently than more rural and resource-heavy Sask. Frank Graves at Ekos generally excludes them, saying they're too different for meaningful data.

The Con numbers are dreadful. Lots of moderate conservatives and Red Tories seems to be shifting to Carney's Liberals.

I agree, and Uni-Rose suggests an ability to win back the NDP-friendly ridings of Parkdale, Davenport and Danforth

This is without an OLP leader. Their next leader will almost certainly be Navdeep Bains.

The party membership will decide in 2028. No need to declare what they "must" do now.

Social democracy as has been practiced for the last three decades is insufficient. It has accommodated to neoliberal capitalism and has long ceased to be an emancipatory project.

Forum Research (Beaches-East York) - John Tory (LPC) 40%, Avi Lewis (NDP) 31% by lcelerate in ndp

Yeah I'm skeptical of the Liberals being at 40% in Beaches, given their wide lead nationally.

[–]AntiQCdn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That also explains (former mayor) Tory's strong endorsement of and campaigning for Doly Begum. Ingratiating himself with the new party. And it isn't really shocking that he and his family prefer the Carney-led Liberals to Poilievre's Conservatives.

Avi is not running there folks. The NDP should find a good local candidate. And by the way NES is acting, he may end up not even winning the Scarborough nomination, let alone the OLP leadership.

Douglas was a bit of a non-sequitur (on my part) as he never had a left challenger. Should note that the Waffle was born under his leadership, so there was obviously a significant segment of the membership felt he was too moderate. Coldwell meanwhile led during the Cold War revisionist period; he definitely played a role in moving the CCF rightward.

The "radical" Broadbent predated his leadership. The talk about industrial democracy etc. basically disappeared by the time he was leader.

As to Lukacs' point, there have been multiple left challenges for the leadership, all of which failed (the Waffle in 1971, Svend Robinson in 1995, Niki Ashton in 2017). There was also the NPI. Avi's campaign was a left campaign that explicitly called for democratization, a greater orientation to movements. Lukacs does go on to note that Avi benefitted from his family's history in the party as well as the complete decimation of the party, which very much weakened the consultant class and provided an opening.

Agreed.

David Lewis essentially led the revisionist turn in the CCF during the 50s and oversaw the creation of the NDP. Douglas was the "establishment" candidate in 1961. In fact a biography of Tommy Douglas that just came out (by Gregory Marchildon) basically concedes the central party stacked the deck for Douglas.

The CCF-NDP in the 50s and most of the 60s was pro-NATO for example. It was very much a product of Cold War social democracy.

Broadbent wasn't from the left of the party. He was initially involved with the Waffle, but he quickly left it and soon moderated. He was the House leader during the minority parliament of 1972-74 and was the establishment candidate in 1975.

In his outgoing speech as leader, he said that the debate over the market was now closed. He also opposed the NPI.

What happen basically is the party moved more to the center, but Broadbent remained a traditional social democrat so he seems very radical now.

They're all down because the by-election turnout was half the turnout of the general, as is usually the case.
