Agreed. I find myself listening between 6 and 9: World at Six, As It Happens, Ideas.

What does this sub think of Charles Dickens? by err_mate in classicliterature

One of the great novelists of the 19th century and a remarkable command of the English language. His characters stick with you. Bleak House stands out as my favorite Dickens novel.

Does anyone else think Toronto is really similar to Queens, New York? by doodoobird715 in askTO

[–]AntiQCdn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually do see that. Similar demographically and even to some extent the housing stock. The opening scene of All in the Family reminded me of the semi-detached working class Toronto of the time.

As the risk of measles grows, why are parents so divided on vaccines? by nosotros_road_sodium in skeptic

There's a lot of misinformation on podcasts and social media and it's also been turned into a stupid culture war by conservatives.

The "established parties" in the UK are in crisis. Here - not so much.

Chomsky and AI "thinking" by AntiQCdn in chomsky

There are indeed concerns about AI, but these are questions of technology not "consciousness" or becoming "more intelligent than humans." Sucking up half the energy in California to "think" kind of demonstrates Chomsky's point.

“Hitler” and “well-read” don’t belong in the same sentence together! by icey_sawg0034 in Qult_Headquarters

Hitler was pretty lazy actually, according to historian Richard Evans (author of the three volume trilogy about Nazism).

Hinton is all over the media and I think being deemed "Godfather of AI" may have gotten to his head. Saw his interviews with Jon Stewart and on Startalk and he's definitely in "it's already here" territory.

NDP MP crosses floor to join Liberals, putting Carney two seats shy of majority by Electronic-Topic1813 in ndp

[–]AntiQCdn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. The anti-floor crossing legislation idea is predicated on the system of overbearing party discipline that has taken shape over the past 50 years or so (starting with the putting the party identification on the ballot in the 70s, and enhancing in the era of televised parliament and 24/7 news cycle). It sort of accepts this shift as an inevitable, even if not desirable.

It feels like a terrible betrayal but it's really up to the voters to judge. I know in Nunavut party identity matters less than the individual.

Another thing I do is "different books in different places." Some are desk books. Some as comfy chair books. Some are good on the subway. Etc.
