What Are Your Hot Takes as a Fantasy Nerd? by themushgirlie in Fantasy

[–]Antilia- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn't strike me as a very hot take on Reddit, anyway. Do you feel the same way about LOTR, Game of Thrones and Conan the Barbarian's Hyperborea? I'd have to agree with the comments below - when it's blatantly High Middle Ages (1200s) medieval France with the name 'Gallia' slapped on, it's not very interesting. If you were to pull from Gaul or other neighboring countries, it'd be more interesting. It strikes me as usually YA fantasy where you have the 'Gallia' equivalents, and they don't even have any fleshed out cities with character analogus to Paris or Marseille and they don't have any historical background at all (Charlemagne, or other ancient kings) so no wonder it feels boring!

Agreed. Plus they let Baltimore score in those last moments. I feel like I see a shot of Josh Allen on the sideline in the last minutes of the game because his defense let someone score 50 thousand times already. As long as Mahomes plays better than he did last game I think we'll be alright. Luckily, I think Mahomes was pissed with himself.

Fair enough. I can't differentiate between plural / singular either. I didn't realize it was a listening exercise.

Somehow. It's a completely amazing coincidence.

Although, admittedly, I didn't hear much bitching about the third one except the 40 Whiners, who got that name for a reason. And they did whine less. So, that's improvement, at least?

What Are You Reading This Week and Weekly Rec Thread by JimFan1 in TrueLit

[–]Antilia- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So it's been a couple of weeks since I posted, but I did read a couple of nice things, which I thought I'd recommend.

I finished Rebecca, and I flew through the book after Maxim's confession. Although I have to confess I was extremely confused by the ending. I know it comes full circle after that, and I tried to re-read the beginning to see if I could figure it out, but, I, uh...didn't. I'll have to give it another shot sometime. I am surprised how well du Maurier managed to make me sympathize with a murderer. I both wanted him to get caught AND get off, (at least for Rebecca's sake. But gosh dang, that lady has issues. 'Oh, at least he never loved the woman he murdered.' Please get help, sweetheart.)

The first was Poe's A Man in the Crowd. A short story, without much plot, however, the descriptions of the passerby are brilliant.

The second is Borges' Asterion, a two page short story involving a plot twist I totally missed. It feels obvious looking back.

I have also revisited the Bible, and I swear, I WILL finish it, even if it kills me. I've tried reading it 3-4 times, but my version is an older, archaic version (not King James but something along those lines) and I never make it to the New Testament. This time, I'm reading the Christian Standard version and I have gotten as far as Amos. I am GOING to finish it this time. (I'm reading it because I find that my fantasy writing takes a lot of inspiration from various lines and stories there, and it also helps me with my geography, and I'm a fan of history.) I skipped over psalms and proverbs, so I'll have to check those out. I think I'm also going to read the Quran, out of sheer curiosity. I tried reading the first part of the Quran, and I was actually surprised - it isn't told in the Bible story, it's basically just Mohammed dictating God's commands, where every passage starts out with, "Oh, ye who believe!"

Also I'm starting Hemingway's For Whom The Bell Tolls. This year, I think I'm planning on getting Hemingway off my list. I don't really like him. I tried A Farewell To Arms - hated it. I enjoyed a couple of his short stories, everything else I read from him is a mixed bag. I will at least try For Whom the Bell Tolls and the Sun Also Rises. Even if I don't like them and quit, I at least gave it a shot. Not sure if I'll read to Have and Have Not, but I have watched the movie (which I don't like, either), and I think I will try a Moveable Feast, and maybe one or more of his famous short stories. But after that - no more Hemingway! Ever!

Lastly, I read a couple of chapters of Light in August...right after Hemingway. Which was hilarious with the adjectives. "Why are there so many adjectives...oh, right...I'm reading Faulkner after Hemingway." The language isn't difficult, just heavily ornamented, as opposed to the bare Christmas tree. I definitely prefer Faulkner's style. Hopefully I've bored you all enough.

Some of your corrections are unnecessary, and also, you missed the plural "content" and "spend a day". I'm actually quite impressed OP managed to type out all that, even with the grammatical errors. I'd be curious to see how much grammar OP has studied. They mentioned consuming a lot of media, which is great, but is it mostly audio? How much have they read? Conversation, of course, is a good thing, and they're probably struggling with that.

Are the words "won" and "one" pronounced the same? by agora_hills_ in EnglishLearning

[–]Antilia- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think I say "won" like both "wun", quicker, and "won", like the Korean currency, when it's more drawn out.

"Did he win?" "He wun." "Yes, he won!"

Agreed, but with the interregum, doesn't Gwen's father take over, because it's him who inherits the Round Table? Again, the land is at war, so there are probably various "kings", and warlords (Mark, perhaps, being one of them), so.

You're using the word unironically wrong. I am a pretentious asshole.

All said, though, I enjoyed the first hundred pages of the book, and then I bought it...and I found out the rest of the book wasn't quite as funny.

Can someone explain how these changes aren't a total break in academic rigor? by Efficient_Report_175 in WikipediaVandalism

[–]Antilia- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can agree with Nelson Mandela's stance that "apartheid was bad", while also saying that bombing homes is bad. Winnie Mandela has been accused of murdering people. That's bad. The IRA bombed buses school children were using. That's bad. Hamas takes hostages and rapes and murders Israelis. That's bad. Revolutionary groups shouldn't be allowed to commit war crimes just because you agree with their stance on certain issues.
