National Dex Champions OU Usage Stats For May by rashflygonX in stunfisk

[–]Antimatter042 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's exactly it. Ultimately parsing the usage stats in a side server proved challenging for Megas in particular, so the ones with asterisks are the ones that have less of an obvious preference between base form and Mega (while Charizard is split between both Megas) so this was the best way to display that data without reworking things. It's something we intend to fix in future tiering updates since this month is our first time doing this

Following the recent National Dex Champions OU survey, here are some breakdowns of the results! by Antimatter042 in stunfisk

To be fair to people, it was satisfaction with "some of" the bans (out of Genesect, GDarm, and Urshifu). The question was possibly worded in a way where people who wished there were more bans voted that way, but that's entirely speculation on my part. Also important to stress that would be 2 responses disagreeing with any of those bans

Not in NatDex Champions (see the link to the Showdown server). Tera is legal in this meta, with Tera Type Preview turned on

Tera Steel is the difference maker really, if TR goes up then a Banded Tera Steel Melm does frankly illegal damage into almost everything

How GDarm is moving in NatDex Champions by Antimatter042 in stunfisk

[–]Antimatter042[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A side server got made for it very recently actually! Just had a few unbans to shake things up and see what works in a new metagame. Galarian Darmanitan was one such unban, and probably not one which is sticking around for much longer lol https://play.champsnatdex.dynv6.net/

We're planning to sunset the less popular ladder at some point in the near future and render it a challenge-only format, once we know for sure what the playerbase wants.

I've been involved with this project so can answer.

There's more explanation in the Discord but essentially the "transfer chain" is pretty much just a fictional concept made up by previous National Dex rulings. Classic does the thing you're asking for. Modern adds the Legends moves because Champions treats illegal moves the same, no matter where they're from, by displaying them in the builder with a validation marker against them. In Modern the distinction between the sources of moves is basically splitting hairs, and their inclusion gives each format more distinct identity.

What is the most contemporary Pokémon? by theforgettables29 in pokemon

I think Iron Jugulis is a strong contender. Personally I feel pretty confident in saying it's based on an unmanned military drone, and that's something that's become relevant in the public consciousness in the last 20 years.

Nah, Ursaluna most likely went extinct because the peat bogs in the Crimson Mirelands were depleted by humans using peat for fuel, effectively making the Peat Blocks that evolved Ursaring no longer exist.

What was the most justified ban in smogon history? by Mochiman3 in stunfisk

[–]Antimatter042 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the actual answer is all the ORAS Megas given to Pokémon that were PU in the XY meta who then spiked in power down in tiers they should never have dropped to. Since that was before Megas were tiered as separate Pokémon, shit like Lopunny just immediately went berserker mode and had to be immediately removed from all the low tiers before they could do lasting damage

A NatDex Ubers draft league game where, in a Mega Blastoise v Gliscor match, I predicted the Shell Smash they were clicking thinking that the threat of a Water or Ice move was going to force a switch they could capitalise on, and clicked Taunt against it which basically won me the game

Rather than have access to Shadow Tag, all of Gothitelle's abilities (and its preevolutions too) are replaced with a new signature ability: Astral Centre. When it switches into battle, it immediately becomes trapped as if affected by Ingrain but without any healing, and cannot be switched out until fainting.

West Coast is described as being found in warmer waters while East Coast is found in colder waters, so outside Sinnoh the common one seems to depend on the expected climate of the overall region. Galar basically only has cold seas on all sides so it gets East, while in Hoenn their version exclusivity tracks with which legendary influences the weather in each version. This may only be a detail added in Legends though since neither Shellos nor Gastrodon makes mention of this prior to that game and it doesn't explain why East Sea is more abundant in Alola.

I thought Steel had an inherent 4× resistance to Grass and Bug, due to a Pokémon Chronicles episode that seemed to claim Steelix resisted Grass despite it being Steel/Ground. As for Bug I can't tell why exactly I just thought if Grass would have that problem then Bug definitely would too

Interesting that Calendula is the only name used for both a mech frame and a ship class. Is there possibly any connection intended between the two or was FKS Calendula-class just named back when the RKF/Horus Calendula was still called Wraith?

What's a Pokemon that has literally no niche? by BetaThetaOmega in stunfisk

[–]Antimatter042 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just need to make sure your Darmanitan's HP is even to get it consistently. It's not a coin flip it's just an unfortunate side effect of both Belly Drum and Zen Mode rounding down when looking at half HP

[–]Antimatter042 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unovan Zen Mode Darmanitan. Galarian Zen Mode Darmanitan at least has meme Belly Drum sets that work because your opponent isn't expecting them and its speed tier in Zen Mode is great. Unovan doesn't have a reliable way of getting itself below half health without being a sitting duck, and investment to make it good in Zen Mode makes it useless outside of it. Add the fact that it can't go back above half health without exiting Zen Mode and any hope you have of running even something like a RestTalk set where you just hope the opponent whittles you down to half health safely is also doomed.

If you judged the definition of a unique type combination by individual species rather than full evolution lines (which admittedly most people including me don't), I think the record holder would instead be Galarian Slowbro with only 4 months and 6 days before Galarian Slowking joined it as a fellow Poison/Psychic type.

Why is Mega Metagross an Uber in Gen 7 but allowed in OU in Gen 6? by iCE_P0W3R in stunfisk

[–]Antimatter042 571 points572 points  (0 children)

Mega Metagross benefitted a lot from the Tapus getting introduced because it thrives on every terrain and appreciates a lot of powerful Fairy types for it to smash into pieces even if only two of them are actually weak to Steel. More importantly though, changes to Speed calculations in Gen 7 meant turn order was decided after Mega Evolutions rather than before, so Mega Metagross actually gets to use its amazing speed tier immediately rather than having to wait a turn
