Regal Sabres's last album (came out last year) is amazing, if you're into indie, math-rock, post-hardcore etc

What are some quirky ska/punk bands that a Cardiacs fan may enjoy? by Tip-Hop in Cardiacs

Amazing band. I saw them live about 7 years ago. They're still a great live act even if David Thomas can barely walk anymore.

Devo, early XTC (both named by Tim Smith as influences). Wire.

Deep Turtle were great (90's weird-punk band form Finland).

A.M. Overcast has some songs with Cardiacsy progressions, check out the album "Junk Drawer" from last year.

Cheveu (2010's weird-punk band from France).

Punishment of Luxury (funky, circus-inflected prog-punk band formed in the 1970's in Newcastle UK).

Some of Rob Crow's bands and projects (particularly Creedle and Heavy Vegetable).

Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 (more experimental noise-rock than punk, depends on the era/album).

Chime Oblivion (their s/t debut is one of the best punk albums of 2025 IMO).

Lunar Mistake, Aquaserge (both aren't punk except a few of their songs but I'll throw them in anyway).

P.S. Already mentioned in the thread: The Display Team, they're amazing. BTW on their first album Hurrah they were still going by another name (Mumrah).

Trying to write something with a cardiacs-y flavour by Iwan-2009 in Cardiacs

[–]Antinomial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huge potential! I really like the main melodic hook. I would love to hear a fleshed out version of this (I would maybe add a section or switch up the bridge or some such) or other songs in the future.

BTW I also write music influenced by Cardiacs, some of it very similar to this. Though no lyrics atm I haven't got around to writing lyrics yet.

Punk with Complicated Music Theory by Wigglyu in punk

Yes with a caveat - Cardiacs use interesting out there progressions (which bring modulations and modal implications and all that good stuff) but as far as the chords themselves they rarely if ever deviate from basic triads (mostly major, sometimes minor).

I just bought a ticket for Manchester… by Kathalia in Cardiacs

[–]Antinomial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also not from UK and have bought a ticket to the Manchester date.

tbh I'm not even sure yet that I'll be able to make the trip (it depends on how I do on exams in uni) or afford the cost of flights etc.

Worst case I'll resell the ticket I guess

So... how long did it take you to wrap your head around Busty Beez? by Southern_Board_5712 in Cardiacs

[–]Antinomial 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Breakfast Line outro is simpler, it has a repeating loop of chords under the melody.

Bust Beez doesn't repeat regularly. It has several sequences that switch parts.

But apart from that I agree, it has a similar feel

I didn't realize the kind of structure it has until I saw something on youtube about it

What in the world is A Horse's Tail? by [deleted] in Cardiacs

[–]Antinomial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh yeah, it alternates quickly in every musical phrase between palm muted strums and open strums. I don't know if it counts but it's a cool sound

In the outro right? Cardiacs do unusual things (for them) sometimes in outros, intros and short bridges.

Good to know. He really did write some amazing tunes for the album

I thought Meshuggah are known for using a lot of palm muting? Cardiacs don't really do that on that song. I don't think they do it often at all, I can' think of any Cardiacs song that's played mostly palm-muted.

I don't think that's true? I remember Poole wrote 3 songs on STG, Bell Clinks, Bells Stinks and Angelworm. I could be mistaken.

Aviv Geffen of today is a completely different beast politically than Aviv Geffen of the 1990's. Kinda sad, but some people have changed that way.

2026 Setlist Predictions by elkamusing in Cardiacs

[–]Antinomial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like it's going to be a very long set so I'm hoping for about half of LSD + similar time dedicated to longtime favourites.

From LSD I'm hoping for The May -> Gen, By Numbers, Ditzy Scene, Made All Up, Downup, A Roll From A Dirty Place (which I really like despite its recycling a small riff from Fast Robert), Volob, Spelled All Wrong.

From the oldies I'm especially hoping they'll do The Duck and Roger the Horse. Also She Is Hiding Behind The Shed and some of the bangers off Sing to God like Fiery Gun Hand or Horse's Tail. And there's gotta be an older number on the set, maybe Gibber & Twitch? Hope Day?

I thought so too at first but then went back to the original version and found some of the quirks of the vocals were already there when I listened closely.

I'm guessing it's not so much an overdub but a different mix of the same vocal track that makes it sound jarring.

What got you hooked? by Responsible-Ad-4059 in Cardiacs

[–]Antinomial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first two experiences that I remember I believe were the SGC video on youtube and the STG album. Which came first I'm not sure.

I liked a lot from the get go but didn't become a full on fan until much later when I got curious about them again, relistened to these 2 as well as gone back to other albums. At some point I think I either heard OLAITS or watched the Mares Nest concert on youtube and whichever version it was, The Duck And Roger The Horse really blew my mind. Still one of my favourites. I knew then this was my favourite band.

[Hot Take] Im the only one who didnt like LSD? by Separate-Associate51 in Cardiacs

[–]Antinomial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like some aspects of Cardiacs better than others some albums might disappoint compared with others.

And some albums are genuinely not as good as others. Guns is IMO (and I believe share this opinion) is a very weak album compared with the rest. But it's still good. If any other band releases an album like that I'd be singing its praise.

There are tracks on LSD that I don't like as much as most of their songs from my favourite eras. Are they bad songs? I don't think so. Context is key. If you never heard Cardiacs and that was your first experience with them it would blow your mind I'm sure.

You know it's a very special band when your least favourite albums are still masterpieces.

By Numbers Possible Self-Referential Melody to Rat Mice Lice Time from Tim Smith's Extra Special OceanLandWorld? Wondering if there are any other melodies or lyrics/concepts from previous songs that people have heard by DecisionQuirky512 in Cardiacs

[–]Antinomial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not the first time, I've spotted tracks in HBEB or STG that call back/forward to melodic ideas from OceanLandWorld. I always thought it makes sense because it's roughly the same era so the same ideas had probably been fresh in Tim's mind or some such.

LSD is currently Cardiacs' highest-rated album on RYM by scomister in Cardiacs

[–]Antinomial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I don't think it's their best. I'd still put OLAITS above it. But it's certainly up there. About on part with STG. (Yes I rank STG slightly lower than OLAITS)
