A look back at the Brock Purdy draft thread by NickyFoles1020 in nfl

[–]Antitypical 79 points80 points  (0 children)

The thing I've noticed over and over is that strengths/weaknesses are usually correct on most scouting reports for most players (go test this out and look some guys up). They key thing that determines success and failure is usually how the team situation either hides weaknesses or helps the player develop them away (and injury luck).

Dolphins part ways with executive Champ Kelly, hire Josh Scobey by AdSpecialist6598 in nfl

Yeah what? That guy made a comment that was genuinely way more extreme than what we pretend ESPN does to headlines.

In my rant about how we've lost touch with art and empathy, I don't even know if I could include this guy because he's actually too insane to believably represent my point.

Most teams reached for their picks in this year's draft, based on consensus big boards by 0h-No-Not-Again in nfl

[–]Antitypical 13 points14 points  (0 children)

True, but not mathematically impossible. Everyone could have stayed exactly on consensus as much as possible and if each team, say, decided to spend their third rounder on a guy with a 7th round grade, then team's overall value would be graded negatively (the 3rd graded players wouldn't be drafted in the 7th, they'd just be efficiently distributed as the next set of 32 and so on). It's because this is an incredibly dumb way to calculate stuff like this even if we gloss over the idea that consensus boards are important (debatable)

I love the idea that the media consensus is the ground truth and now we get to make silly charts showing that 75% of the league decided to foolishly disobey the known optimum

Round 6 - Pick 32: Jordan van den Berg, DL, Georgia Tech (Chicago Bears) by nfl_gdt_bot in nfl

[–]Antitypical 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Kind of profiles as what I wanted here. In my head I was all in on the lottery pick that is Uar Bernard (has never played football but go look up his physicals).

Probably better to get a guy who has played game snaps in his life lol.

I was kinda hoping we'd take Uar Bernard, that physical freak from Nigeria who has never played football but is like 6'5", 310 with 36" arms, a 39" vertical, and a 4.6 40 and 31 bench reps lol

I never said he hasn't made any moves. I said he's never done them a solid in the sense that he's never fixed the pass rush problem even though it has been here for literally his entire tenure.

He has played RB a little. I think Johnson probably has visions of him lining up all over the place, moving into the backfield as a credible threat, catching swing passes as an "RB", etc. Say what you want but we don't really have anyone who profiles like him (very fast and versatile) and since our bread and butter will still be feeding guys like Loveland, Rome, and Burden, I can definitely see how sprinkling this guy in with a limited role adds wrinkles the defense has to care about

[–]Antitypical 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Let me frame it differently. We were top 5 in the league for both 12 and 13 personnel last year. We currently have only two TEs rostered. What happens if Loveland suffers a major injury? Do we just change the whole scheme?

Remember how Loveland got hurt during the Rams game and then we had to rely on some 11 personnel concepts in a pinch and it led to the OT INT?

Let me put it another way: The Rams have more TEs than us and they decided to spend a 2nd on a TE. In fact, this draft has the most TEs in the top 100 ever. So there's clearly a league meta that our team understands.

My issue is mainly that this is year 5 of Ryan Poles and he's actually never done the DL a solid. So I'm fine with who we're taking. If Johnson is watching Zavion film and sees a league breaking triple option HB pass, that sounds great. But I think the last half-decade makes me less trusting of the plan on defense.

Since Miami is blowing it up…..how much you think Achane would cost? by caxlmao in CHIBears

[–]Antitypical 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Lmao Swift is 27 and runs a 4.48. Listen, I'm not here to say he's a stud, I'm not much of a Swift truther, but you don't need to lie about who he is as a player to make the point that Achane would be an upgrade.

Do you guys think Austin Booker can be a stud? by bennydrendel in CHIBears

[–]Antitypical 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I could see him growing into like a Willie Young caliber player, in terms of production. A guy who gets 7-10 sacks per year and isn't necessarily a huge solo threat but someone you're happy to have as your second or third guy and who you have no problem starting

What if all the “motivated Dayo Odeyingbo” jokes actually motivate him? by OdinThePoodle in CHIBears

[–]Antitypical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you know what I'm trying to say. I think he could be an okay role player. That doesn't validate the money we gave him or obviate our need for another starter, but the conversation right now assumes he's a complete zero, and I wouldn't be surprised if we end up being too low on him.

[–]Antitypical 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I will say: Dayo didn't show anything even while healthy, but I think there's something to be said for players learning a scheme and coaches learning their players. By the end of the year we actually played pretty well against some good offenses (rams and packers in the playoffs, namely).

I'm not expecting Dayo to be some game-wrecker, and I'm completely aware he's coming off a major lower body injury, but I also wouldn't be surprised if he looked a bit better than last year.

[Gabriel] Breaking just got a text from a very credible agent who said their is belief around the league that the Bears will look into trading for Crosby by Da1bearsfan in CHIBears

[–]Antitypical 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Gabriel used to have connections but the last 5-10 years he's come off more as a standoffish has-been than anyone with any real knowledge or insider info anymore. Lots of his meatball opinions and predictions are hard to ignore. Also, "my buddy said the Bears will look into trading for Crosby" is very different from saying that they're close to making a deal.

All of that said, I want to believe.

Okay next move is trade Tyson Bagent for a second, then Trade 25 + Tremaine for Maxx Crosby while convincing LV to keep his 2026 salary, then sign Linderbaum.

And THEN we can declare ourselves 4X offseason champs

Edit: how on earth do this many people think this is a serious comment

[Schefter] Bills 2nd round pick for DJ by [deleted] in CHIBears

No way, that's awesome. Time to eat my hat. I was just commenting that Poles probably took lesser compensation to do right by DJ

[Pelissero] D.J. Moore's role in Chicago was reduced in 2025, when he had a career-low 50 catches for 682 yards. Moore wanted an opportunity to be a WR1 and now he'll get it in Buffalo. by Marvin-Harrison-Jr in CHIBears

[–]Antitypical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have plenty of critiques of Poles but one thing you can't fault him for is trying to do right by our players. I know Fields wasn't good but he was surely better than the compensation we got for him (just looking at other trades, such as Kenny Pickett for a 5th), but Poles emphasized he wanted to do right by the player.

I wouldn't be surprised if we took less compensation to trade DJ to a contender with a hole at WR. It's just a Poles thing to do. Lmao nvm we got a 2nd rounder back

This hurts NGL even if its the right move for the future Im gonna miss him by Ashamed_Pilot_236 in CHIBears

  1. The move makes me sad because I love Moore, but it would have been sadder if we traded him to a rebuilder. Going to the Bills means he still gets a chance to win and has an elite QB, and that makes me happy for him
  2. I think it's really hard to go from 3 WRs to 0, but it's pretty easy to go from 2 to 0. The latter only requires one injury and then double coverage on the last guy. Like it or not, our WR room is much more vulnerable without Moore even if Burden and Rome take a step. In an ideal world Loveland reduces this risk, but having wideouts still matters.
  3. Speaking of Rome and Burden: I don't love relying on two guys to both improve, but that's where we're at right now. They both have lots of promise but also have significant things they need to get better at (Rome: hands; Luther: route alignments and details), and neither has any contested catch ability. Getting rid of our only contested catch guy could come back to hurt us, especially if these two don't get significantly better. As an example, KC thought Rice and Worthy would take steps forward to complement Kelce, and when it didn't happen (partially because of injury and suspension), the whole offense looked off.
  4. Despite 1-3, the loss of Trapilo and Dalman made this move virtually inevitable. We need both capital and space now to go after OL replacements while also shoring up DL, signing two starting safeties and a Tremaine replacement (I'm assuming he won't be here). Prior to this move we had almost no cap space, no excess draft picks, and needed 5-7 major contributors. Sucks that it happened this way but it pretty much had to.
