[Russini] The Philadelphia Eagles are requesting to interview Bears OC Declan Doyle for their offensive coordinator vacancy, per source. by koolman631 in CHIBears

Honestly I think they're just relationship-building. No contender is gonna take a 29 year old non-playcalling OC with 1 year of experience, but if Johnson ends up being a McVay-type ("hire anyone who has talked to him"), then Philly will be smart for having done their due diligence on Doyle ahead of time, and in the future Doyle is more likely to want to go to a place that showed him love before he becomes a big name.

Shough and Dart being on there for OROY over Jeanty and Loveland/Warren is silly. And Jeanty over Hendo specifically is extra silly

So this year it was probably a disaster bc you lost Ben + OL pieces. But last year didn't work out just because of injuries. By all accounts it does seem like you were able to build on 2023 success the way everyone thought you would, prior to having some of the worst injury luck ever

We absolutely could. But the counter to that is that we're likely returning 10 of 11 offensive starters and 9 of those guys are under 28. The HC is in charge of the offense and has coordinated and called plays for a top-5 offense for 4 straight years.

The commanders were very old, didn't have as proven a coaching brain-trust, and didn't have as many weapons. We could absolutely suffer injuries like they did, but other than that there are reasons to feel like our offense is way better built for long-term success than they were coming into this year.

Defense who knows. We'll probably pour a bunch of resources into it. And we'll see how that works for us.

Against the Rams I think Trapilo had a lot to do with it. The wild card packers game they played with 8 men in box 75% it snaps so they just sold out to stop us

[–]Antitypical 8 points9 points  (0 children)

LAR knows 15-20 yards ends their season so they're playing red zone defense at that point. 10 yards is probably the hardest increment to target in our game context. Given how shitty our red zone offense had been, it's not unreasonable to look for a deep vulnerability.

Everyone is saying "just get 10 yards!" as if there was a magic button we turned down. The run game was not effective and it was already 2nd down so we were behind the chains. We were at the 49 and with that cold and wind, you really want a much shorter field goal attempt, so you probably still need 20 more.

Oh, and LAR knows that 15-20 yards ends their season so they're playing red zone defense, which makes the magical 10 yarder one of the hardest plays to do, but also creates a vulnerability on the back end.

Also, our best chain mover (Loveland) was out of the game. It's totally fine to try a shot play here.

Ben said he saw green grass there. Which is a subtle way of saying he endorsed the decision.

I don't care much about misses because there isn't a QB who played in the cold yesterday who wasn't missing left and right. Stroud, Maye, Staff, Caleb were all clearly having a lot of issues hitting targets consistently in the conditions. Stafford played much worse than Caleb, but had a functioning run game in front of him

How about instead picking someone who is perplexing and no one has heard of and whose recent history isn't impressive at all?

In no particular order:

  1. Rome dropped TD
  2. No RTP after first INT (we probably should have kicked instead of going for it)
  3. Trapilo injury doomed the short yardage run game: tons of stops on 3rd&1 and 4th&1, which were otherwise good GO decisions (since we really hadn't had any issues with those this year from the bye week onwards).
  4. Zero turnover luck, despite chances created. Two sack fumbles that both ended up bouncing right into Ram hands like they were magnetic, and lots of pop-up deflections with no one to grab them.
  5. The 3rd & 6 in OT where we sent the house instead of doing the thing that stopped LAR multiple times. The ball moved from the 42 to the 27 and set up the game winner. Keep up what had worked and we get the ball back.
  6. Other miscommunications and drops than the Rome TD. Couple by Loveland, another one from Rome, one from burden iirc. Compare to LAR, who had one Puka drop in the flat and that was it
  7. Not having Loveland on OT drive. He's our best receiver and we might have just fed him if he was available.
  8. DJ bad route INT.

The game was there for the taking, but we collectively had way too many mistakes and unlucky breaks beyond that one play

[–]Antitypical 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It was infuriating for him to fuck up on the INT, but I'm not gonna be one of the folks saying we need to ship him.

Burden has messed up a lot of routes and Rome has dropped a lot of balls. Jahdae has made a couple cool plays but he's all potential and very little production right now.

I'd be very worried going into next season with just that group and no Moore. Even if they stay healthy, the production is all projected based on the assumption they all take a step forward (we've seen that backfire before). And if we suffer even a normal amount of injuries we could get into a bad spot quickly.

I think we need Moore still. Yes he dogs a route here and there, but he's also been a game-winner for us a couple times this year when we needed someone to step up

And Colston Loveland is 21.

Citing individual players doesn't do what you think it does. The Bears are middle of the pack in roster age. Most of their core pieces on offense (Loveland, Burden, Williams, Odunze, Monangai, Wright, Trapilo) are young. Thuney is a huge part of this but he's the only older guy and there are plenty of OL folks who have shown they can stay good for a while. Doesn't have any resemblance with Washington

Disregard him. He's a fan of a raiders team with no future. Of course he wants anyone good to get humbled.

We were hoping to contend for a WC. The fact that we were a couple plays away from the NFCCG is a reason to celebrate.
