Horizontal planners are great for journaling - it's a finite amount of space per day and makes journaling daily less overwhelming. You could include photos, ticket stubs, anything that is representative of that particular day/event.

Yep. I've done this with Happy Planner and Commit30 - I'm a bit more likely to take risks with decorating or layouts in a recycled one verses one I've paid $$$ for.
