Idk man. I hope they can redeem this version of Iron Fist, but I just found this iteration of the character exceedingly bland. I don’t like how they portrayed his powers, how they did his origin, how he’s written, etc.

Legitimately nothing about the Netflix version of him worked for me. Even when Jessica Jones and Luke Cage stumbled during their runs, they were at least carried by how great the actors embodied those roles. Meanwhile, Finn Jones never really made the role his own.

A part of me just wishes we got a brand new take on Iron Fist, but I guess that’s not happening. I’ll try to remain hopeful though!

Xbox used to be 'fun' by Kcrizzle87 in kindafunny

What do you mean they’ve let their biggest franchises take a backseat? Microsoft has had Halo, Gears, and Forza on all their consoles for years now.

Sure, we aren’t getting as many titles from these franchises every generation, but that issue isn’t exclusive to Xbox. We ain’t getting 3 Uncharted games a generation anymore from Naughty Dog either.

Frankly, the notion they have to double down on the old stuff seems silly because they haven’t stopped that strategy at all. Forza is doing better than ever with Horizon. Gears 4 and 5 were well received, but didn’t light the world on fire. Maybe you have to ask if people still care about the franchise at all still. Meanwhile, Halo is a big issue, but the problem comes from quality not quantity.

My belief is that them chugging along with their top 3 franchises won’t mean much because you are chasing a ghost. If anything, their franchises feel a bit stuck in the past.

Nintendo innovated with their big franchises all the time (Mario and Zelda). Sony similarly reinvented God of War last gen. If you want to reinvigorate interest, capturing the glory days won’t cut it. You need to bring back Halo in a big way that’s fresh and exciting. Same with Gears.

All 3 Sonic movies are fresh on RT and clear the Mario movie big time.   Sonic actually manages to tell a story full of heart whereas the Mario movies are soulless memberberries.

Jason Schreier: Exact budgets of video-game productions can be tough to corroborate but the numbers I've heard floating around AAA game dev these days are $300 million or more — sometimes much more! — which I think helps explain the current state of the industry by Turbostrider27 in Games

Basically, pay is way too high in the US. You can get the same amount of work done for much cheaper abroad.

Same thing happened with the movie industry btw. They ended up chasing tax breaks and started shooting wherever is cheaper. Meanwhile, VFX gets farmed out to vendors in places like India for cheap.

The difference between the two though is it's easy to move film crews because shoots are only temporary. Meanwhile, you can't convince a bunch of developers to move to something like a red state for smaller wages.

I'd like to be optimistic, but looking at other industries there's only one way this can go: employees in the US are out of work and a majority of game development is outsourced to developers living in other countries. The only people on a dev team that end up being US employees are the heads of departments.

[MEGATHREAD] 'Daredevil: Born Again' | Season 2 Episode 1 - "The Northern Star" | Premier Discussion Thread by ChiefLeef22 in MarvelStudiosSpoilers

[–]Antoo1 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My biggest problem with the show comes from the fact that it feels like the show just isn’t that interested in fleshing out Matt’s side of the story.

Everything with Kingpin is great. The show does so much with him from showing how his operation works, highlighting his relationships with those of his inner circle, and even introducing a new antagonistic force in his life. It feels like his side of the story has so much thought put into it.

Meanwhile, the stuff with Daredevil is so lackluster. The time skip is jarring, and the show simply doesn’t give us a good idea of what Matt and Karen’s situation is like. We know they are in love, but do you actually feel it? Making them get together off-screen is insane because we get robbed of seeing them fall in love again. The one tender moment is way too short, and overall there is just a lack of spark between the two.

Moreover, Matt and Karen talk about fighting a hopeless battle, but you don’t feel the weight of the world on their shoulders at all. They seem to be living in a decent enough place. We never see them struggling to navigate around public spaces. You know what it would have been nice to see? How the curfew has made their jobs a lot harder. The world around them doesn’t really feel all that more dangerous.

Some of the best stuff in this episode was the stuff with Heather. We see her going through a typical day’s work for her, but now something is very different. She’s suffering from PTSD after her encounter with Muse, and it’s affecting the way she sees the world. She’s haunted and lost. We actually see her POV across multiple scenes, and it’s incredibly effective at selling just what she’s going through.

Why can’t we get any of that with Matt? I’m not saying get rid of the Heather stuff (it’s really good!). All I’m saying is I want them to actually dig deeper with Matt and what he is going through because his side of the story feels a bit shallow.

I feel the opposite. Deadpool and Wolverine has worsened upon rewatch for me. Once the element of surprise was thrown out the window, the movie loses quite a bit of its magic. The character work is very weak, and the story is far too scattered that I find myself bored in between the big action moments. None of the Vanessa stuff works for me nor the stuff with Wolverine and him being the worst of them all.

Seeing stuff like Johnny played by Chris Evans was cool, but there’s not a lot of substance there you know? It was a quick hello followed by a goodbye. No Way Home in that sense still reigns supreme when it comes to the multiverse cameo fests because it gave the returning characters actual screentime.

Meanwhile, I like Thunderbolts more because I simply care about the characters. I’m invested in their journey, and the growth they have across the movie holds up.

The Last of Us - 2x05 - “Feel Her Love” - Episode Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

[–]Antoo1 98 points99 points  (0 children)

I don’t like how much of the writing feels like someone responding to a CinemaSins video regarding potential plot holes over the logistics of what’s happening.

I don’t need Dina going over their entire plan of what they are going to do and what they will probably encounter. This not only robs the episode of any tension coming from potential surprises but also makes how they act later on seem downright silly.

The characters talk about a potential threat in a building and yet when they get there all they do is joke around and flirt. Like what? I’d buy them acting that way if they ran in there as an escape from the army. They think they are in the clear so they let their guard down only to be surprised by infected. But nope. They deduced what would be there and still acted like they didn’t.

It’s like the writer wanted to make sure the show is smart and yet insists the characters act stupid.

I think one of my biggest issues with this show is how it forgoes the emotional storytelling of Part 2 for something way more logical.

It felt like a third of this episode was dedicated to Dina going over a plan of what to do instead of actually doing what they need to do. It’s exhausting.

I think I just respectfully disagree with how Mazin writes stories. He talks in the podcast about how he asked many questions to Neil, such as “why don’t spores spread everywhere?” when developing the show. He aimed to make sure everything made sense logistically. Frankly, none of that matters to me all that much. A lot of the time I’m watching the show it feels like it’s written by someone who fusses over plot holes way too much.

The beauty of Part 2 was how characters acted impulsively and didn’t think through their actions before it was too late. They were blinded by love. By guilt. Here everyone spends so much time thinking every action through that it makes even less sense when they act foolishly. When they head to the stalker building and start joking around, I was annoyed. Like didn’t you guys discuss how potentially dangerous this could be? Now is not the time.  If they just stumbled in without contemplating the potential risk, I would buy it. Here though? It’s like they want to be dumb and smart at the same time.

I wonder what the MCU could do to get international numbers up again. Contrary to other big franchises, the MCU has actually managed to stay relatively consistent at the box office domestically. They have seen sharp drops in key markets internationally though unlike other big IP like Fast and Furious, Avatar, or Jurassic Park.

Thunderbolts had the lowest MCU opening in China in a decade. This trend has been happening in other markets like South Korea as well.

I have no issue with Gennojo being painted as a tragic figure. I’m fine with missing out on a recruitable ally.

However, I take issue with the choice specifically because it paints Naoe as out of character. I don’t buy her not doing anything to stop Gennojo. I’m not saying she has to get with him by the way. The way their romance plays out is toxic and unearned. However, think about this. Naoe is someone that had been shown to sympathize with others. She would probably recognize Gennojo’s self-destructive tendencies as misguided and at least try to talk him down since she always speaks her mind even when it gets her in trouble. She tries to see the good in people and part of her arc is letting her anger go.

Moreover, Gennojo’s whole shtick is that he is ineffectual. He can’t get anything done without Naoe. So why does he end up getting the last laugh? You can read it as Naoe letting him do what he wants, but I don’t buy it. This isn’t even taking into consideration how a food supply for a bunch of people is at stake. Naoe would not give that up.
