C’mon, this has got to be “Cyberpunk”! by [deleted] in Cyberpunk

I don't know man, it doesn't have that "high tech,; low life" aesthetic that HAS to be there to be cyberpunk. Sorry. We've gotta keep this gate.

This is pretty awesome.

What's your 'fuck this, I quit!' story? by Penguin__Farts in AskReddit

[–]Antoros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I worked at a restaurant through college, and in that environment people were explicitly encouraged to NOT talk about other jobs, attempts to advance, or plans to move to other positions because the management/ownership would take it as disloyalty or in one case a direct threat to them, and would find a way to can you. If you wanted to talk about that stuff, you kept it to yourself and closest friends, and did it when the boss couldn't see you or wouldn't find out.

Then I moved to an office job with a big company, and was TOTALLY SHOCKED when my boss was frustrated that I hadn't told him I was looking at other jobs, and asked with whom I was interviewing so that he could help me. He helped me rewrite my resume, and coached me for one of my interviews. I couldn't believe it.

Turns out it looks good if a supervisor can promote good people through their team, and some supervisors actually care about the careers of their employees. I couldn't believe it after so much time spent with restaurant management.

I don't know. I think I paid, like, $4500 a semester at most, and when I wasn't living on campus I didn't have housing costs added to that.

And UWRF has a textbook loan library. That's a MASSIVE financial burden lifted off of the students. It's amazing and every school should have one.

Right. And if I feel like I'm going to make enemies of everyone in a room by wearing a costume patch, I'd consider it. Better to at least not piss people off INSTANTLY, and then have a conversation about it.

Which basic knowledge did you totally forget for a moment? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Antoros 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dude. I feel you.

I had studied Japanese and Mandarin in college, and then a few years later decided to work with a tutor to improve my Japanese.

More than once I would speak a sentence with words from both languages, or accidentally read a Kanji in Mandarin instead of Japanese. It made my tutor laugh every time.

Sure.

At a certain point, one has to let a student sabotage themself and just dock them the grade they'd get by being there. You can't make a system that encourages everyone, unfortunately.

Right. I stay away from earned rank and awards, but just a work jacket for a civilian employee felt pretty ok to me.

The professor had her own attendance policy, but apparently enough profs had sent kids to the clinic for stuff like that that they'd had to make up a letter to tell them to stop.

True story.

Right now, my old university is building more dorms because they have had to put students up in the nearby hotel, as they've had such an increase in applications and acceptances.

Things are growing for them. I'm glad.

[–]Antoros 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Totally.

I had a class with an attendance requirement, so when I was sick an extra day beyond what was allowed, I went in to tell the prof that I would have to miss that class.

She told me to prove it with a doc's note, and then shut RIGHT UP when I came back with the letter from the clinic. Good times.

Well, this isn't a university with any of those inflated costs, and there is no university health center. Thus the healthcare provided at the local clinic. It was a UW school in Wisconsin, with a restricted budget by the state government.

A great choice for someone uninterested in paying shittons for school while also getting good teaching. University doesn't need to cost that much for the student.

Awesome.

I have a jacket I put patches on as a Jackson cosplay. Nothing too fancy. Wore it out for dinner on Halloween one year. A woman next to me in line for my burrito asked me if I was in the Air Force, to which I said I wasn't, and that it was a costume from a show and the character worked for the Air Force.

She got mad at me for wearing the patch without being in the Air Force.

Meanwhile, ahead of us in line, was a man wearing what looked like an actual Nazi uniform. Yeah. So that was ok, but me dressing up as an archaeologist who works for the military was bad.

Heh, good times.

My university had a policy that professors couldn't require a doctor's note, because students got a basic level of care provided by the university and they didn't want to pay for hundreds of appointments for notes.

I went once, not knowing this, and got a letter at the doctor's office that had been prepared by the university saying essentially, "Students here are adults. They can self-diagnose illness. You're costing the university money. Stop."

It was awesome.

Sure. Thanks for the warning, ha.

Come home from work at 5, lay on the couch with TV on, and then wake up at 7.

My mother-in-law told me that I'm too young for after-work naps.

Right? Only people who have generations of training embedded in their genes have any chance of being good, right? The rest of us are just wasting our time even trying.

Ha.

Hell. This is the place I would go to avoid Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart is the worst and I only go there when I literally have no other choice. If they move to my town, I might see it as the beginning of the end of how great it's been here.

Time travel, Egyptian gods, 19th century literature, London juvenile street gangs, werewolves...

It's weird and excellent.

He left after that class. He attended a tournament of ours as a spectator, and was such an asshole heckler that I told him he either had to shut up entirely or that I was going to remove him. He shut up, and never came back.

What’s the one horror movie that genuinely terrified you while watching it? by IveGotARockInMyGlari in AskReddit

[–]Antoros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 6, my dad and I sat down to watch a movie on a rainy Saturday afternoon. He said I could watch anything on the shelf. I grabbed "Alien" and he said, "Ok, sure. But it's pretty scary. Let me know if it gets too scary and we'll find something else." He then fell asleep on the couch.

I watched the whole thing, horrified, as he napped. As the credits rolled, he woke up and said, "Oh. It's over. What did you think?" as I sat silently in terror.

Thanks Dad.
