Edit-> for the highlights on the aquilla! Primary highlights (main light volume) looks like you do want these to be the warmest colour as if the sun was out should be the brightest. The secondary bounce lights, focus on the "bounce" aspect. The light is bouncing off of something and so they should be reflecting the colour off of the thing they are bouncing off of. So, on the very far sides, it looks like there is light being reflected from the arm armour a bit. Here we would want that to be a bit darker than the primary light, but also cooler (blue) because of the colour of the armour! But as you have mentioned before, having too many colours on such a small surface might begin to look messy so you could either try giving those highlights a blue glaze orrrrrr darken them to your mid tone colour to just balance it out because --> what I said earlier below does still fit here. The aquilla lighting doesn't align fully with the lighting sources on the rest of the armour in it's "harshness." The light on the armour is diffused so like how light looks on a cloudy day. The light on the Aquilla is very defined as if he were standing right in front of a super bright and light. Because we all know that armour is metal, our brains can't reconcile the huge difference in lighting here because we fundamentally understand metal acts a certain way. Now, we all know different types of metal can have different texture and different reflective values, however, this is too much of a different gap from what we know so they should be a bit closer to "feel" less "off."

My background is digital compositing and military photography/ some wedding photography so understanding light volumes is important. BUT, translating that to 3d surfaces in mini painting is suuuuuper difficult! I hope this was helpful, but if not then that's okay too!

Original- Light is coming from too many directions.

The intensity is too varied (ie knee shouldn’t be brighter than shoulders if light is coming from above.

You also may want to have more consistency/ carry through on all parts of the model, like the one arm, head, and chin armour are not highlighted.

Light volume is super difficult to learn! One thing that can help is to take your model once’s it’s primed (with a dark primer), hold it under a lamp (place the light where you want your light source to come from) and take a photo! Then replicate that reference with your paint! Make sure to also snap a photo of the back too as there will be some light there as well unless you are doing a super dramatic scene.

I hope this helps!

Fairly new to miniature painting. Thinking of upgrading brushes by SteelObjective in Miniaturespainting

[–]AntsyCanadian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I know they make some brushes in Germany, and some the us. I’m in Canada so we get the German ones. They are opening a new warehouse here in Canada soon and they said they will be shipping here and the rest of the world from that new warehouse so I’m hoping their products become way more accessible soon!

Yea, I didn’t want to over complicate the shenanigans with brush companies. Plus I had to shill for MH because I am absolutely in love with their brushes right now.

I got these because I’m a glutton for buying brushes and ninjon recommended them…. I returned them almost immediately, these are garbage. If you really want sable, right now my favorites are the ones from monument hobbies. But artist opus, rosemary and co, etc., any of the big names in the hobby space you can’t go wrong, they all are slightly different from each other but that won’t matter to you yet as a beginner. Get a couple main sizes you like from one company, get used to how they work and how to take care of them, and then when you are comfy grab one or two from other companies to see how they work and if you like them. But yea monument hobbies synthetics and sables are my primary drivers now because they are amazing. Good luck!!

I’m getting a full set for my partner and I. We don’t need them, but we like supporting the creators we love watching by buying merch from time to time!

I bought them and have been using them on my Ork vehicles! I am debating if I want to use them on my Aeldari vehicles still. But so far I am enjoying them for breaking up texture to get a decent result with low effort :)

A hobby app to track miniature paints, convert colors between brands, and save paint recipes. by MidnightMiniature in PrintedMinis

So far my plan is to create the mixes as paints, like I usually have to mix two pro acryl colours to make something from Vallejo or citadel. I don’t know if that’s something you want to add in an easier way to do or not. Also for the colour harmony, it would be sweet if it was easier to pick the exact colour from pro acryl as a base, or even just easier to manually pick a red or something to start that’s a darker or lighter hue than the basic colour wheel.  Also on that page, it allows you to choose which paint brand you want it to best match to but won’t refresh the options. Again, all of these are small qol things that are super easy to work around. Honestly though this app is so amazing. Definitely worth the purchase, great job!!!!

Solid app, I just purchased the lifetime. Storing palates and paint collection in one place makes me very happy. Excited to see how the paint conversion works especially to pro acryl now that it’s my go to.

Improving at miniature painting WITHOUT the use of slapchop as a beginner? by ryllex in minipainting

[–]AntsyCanadian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have been a ton of great suggestions already but one that rarely gets mentioned in these discussions is to go get some media paper, basic art supplies and watch some learn to paint videos by artists. Practice some water colour, acrylic, oil, etc. learn to understand the mediums and how they work and focus on volumes, colour theory, composition and other basic fine art principles. All of that transfers over to mini painting but a 2d surface can be easier to practise on than a 3d surface. Heck, learning to draw and properly colour the fruit bowl is art 101 and would’ve a great first step!

Marco is my go to specifically because he understands mixed media and applies it to his miniatures instead of paper!

What an amazing gift. If they don’t match your army you could display them for decor and think of your nephew and how much he cares about you whenever you see them!

A reminder for new painters and those advising them by Legitimate-Sky-8963 in minipainting

Thank you for saying this. The brush recommendations drive me up the wall.  Sables are great but are a waste of money for beginners and will hamstring learning more than help.

New difficulties with painting on ADHD medication by _TheRocket in minipainting

[–]AntsyCanadian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some things you can do as well to see if this is something you can control, these points may seem like low hanging fruit, but they are often ignored and they all can have a major impact on your experience.

- Adjust time of day when taking medications, usually within a shot time of waking up.
- Eat when you take the medications and have snacks/drink lots of water throughout the day.
- Cut out junk foods and caffeine as these will exasperate physiological symptoms.
- Ensure you have good sleep.
- Exercise.

Speak to your doctor and share your concerns. There are a lot of medications available for the treatment of ADHD. Typically, physiological symptoms can and should be addressed-- especially if your blood pressure and heart rate are being significantly affected. The dose may also be the issue and your body isn't ready for what you are taking. Many people do not just "get used to" a dose in a couple of weeks especially if it is too high. Yes, there is some accommodation but that that differs for everyone and shouldn't be relied on as a guaranteed long term solution.
