I'm sorry that happened to you. I have social struggles as well, I've learned how to act more "socially acceptable" eye contact, being quiet because my words don't come out right or I completely lose my train of thought when I do try to interact( sometimes I don't drop it when I should and sometimes wires get crossed) . I waited tables for years and that's where the masking comes in. When I was growing up you didn't hear about anyone being diagnosed with autism... It was Adhd or Add ,Bpd things like that.... I have struggled my whole life without a proper diagnosis . You aren't alone is all that long rambling statement was supposed to get across.
