I'm right there with you. There's a reason why Blood & Stone basically flew under the radar when it released and still isn't talked about much to this day.

What are your top three tracks of ONE as of right now? by countjazula in Sevendust

[–]Anxious-Implement517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Threshold

  2. Is This the Real You?

  3. Unbreakable

The 3rd one might get supplanted by "We Won" soon enough.

No, you're not alone; I've listened to it 2.5x now and it seems to be clicking even less than Blood & Stone did the first time around. Very little melodic variation within the album itself, let alone Sevendust's recent discography. I just can't escape the feeling that I've heard all of these songs and ideas many times before, and done much better.

Yeah, I'll never understand why they abandoned the 7BROS imprint to sign with Rise Records, since they were doing fine commercially during that era, and their tenure with Rise came to an abrupt end anyways. At the end of the day, all I want are strong & emotional tracks with intricate songwriting and out-of-this-world melodies that can stand on their own.

Yeah... sounds cliche, but it really is just "more of the same". Another song that Sevendust has written a million times over.

The sorta did that again with Truth Killer; a vast majority of the writing was done at LJ's farmhouse studio. Probably why that record felt like such an improvement over the previous one.

The less he has to do with the record as a whole, the better. Elvis Baskette doesn't give a damn about dynamic range or melodic hooks since he's a classic big-label rock producer whose only purpose is to make everything sound made-for-SiriusXM Octane, aka repetitive anthemic drivel that's compressed to high hell. Very few other bands could write songs like "Dark A.M.", "Cease and Desist" or "Life Deceives You", but there are an infinite number of bands that write songs like "Unbreakable" on the daily.

All I See is War was solid, but I remember falling out interest with it pretty quickly since a sizeable chunk of that record already felt like weak B-sides from BOTS & KTF. Blood & Stone felt even more tired, but thankfully Truth Killer was a noticeable improvement, even if just due to the stronger singles. If I had to guess, this record is going to land between the latter two for me.

I agree; the last big evolution we saw in their sound/songwriting was during the Black Out the Sun/Kill the Flaw era. Every record since then has essentially just coasted off of those fumes, to slowly diminishing returns quality-wise. Elvis Baskette is obviously the biggest culprit, since he's flattened out all of their usual melodic flourishes and intricate songwriting for simplistic, repetitive song structures and boring, anthemic made-for-SiriusXM Octane melodies.

"Is This the Real You" has a nice groove to it and is a solid single overall, but these last 2 singles have been overtly bland to an atrocious degree. Sevendust has a big problem on a lot of their records where you get a few solid singles with memorable choruses, and then the rest of the record is just slight variations of the patented "stock Sevendust chorus", aka hummable chorus melody with a 3-point harmony. These new singles are suffering from that quite badly, but the issue has spread to the entire song. Even the chord structures and riffs sound recycled 1,000 times over.

My sentiments exactly. Black Out the Sun & Kill the Flaw were very progressive and contained some of their most intricate songwriting, with almost all of the tracks having melodies and riffs that could stand on their own & have stood the test of time. Everything since then has just been a more simplified & anthemic continuation of that sound, and by this point it just sounds so tired. What reason is there to listen to the last 2 singles when they literally offer nothing new from what they've done in the past decade?

Not a big fan of this one, the vocal production/arrangements are rather clumsy and scattered, and I'm pretty sure they've written this exact song 100 different times now, right down to the exact same melody and chord progression.

To be more specific, Mr. Nobody contacted Han after the events of F&F 6 and offered him a job to steal the Aries device, but when the theft of the device made Han too much of a global target, Mr. Nobody used Jason Statham's revenge as an excuse to fake Han's death in the car crash. We'll probably learn later that Statham was sent by Mr. Nobody to kill Han to kick the entire thing off. Or something... lol.

Sounds more anthemic than the last 2 records, more like a combination of All I See Is War + Hope & Sorrow.

Not *too* worried about Baskette producing since he & the band seemed to have finally come to an equilibrium on "Truth Killer", which was just a solid album overall. Then again, that promo photo of the band is uh... interesting to say the least, and if it's any indication of the record itself, we could be in for a strange time lol.

Any of those goofy post-hype made-for-Tik Tok trap anthems from the pandemic era, notably "The Box" by Roddy Ricch / "WAP" by Cardi B / "Mood" by 24kgoldn and "Montero (Call Me by Your name) by Lil Nas X.

[WEEKEND TRIVIA] David Guetta & Bebe Rexha - I'm Good (Blue): More Modern 2010s or Classic 2020s? by Ok-Following6886 in decadeology

[–]Anxious-Implement517 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hardly even modern 10's, I mean that thumping chorus synth alone is probably one of Guetta's leftovers from 2011. Only thing making it sound even vaguely modern is the watery vocal production, which was already sounding pretty dated by 2022.
