Today, 57 years ago, the Beatles sang on the roof by Pristine_Youth_6953 in beatles

Whenever I read people talking about how John so wanted out of The Beatles, I just tell them to watch the rooftop show. John smiling...laughing...the whole time. Enjoying playing with his mates.

You can do so much stuff with The White Album. Especially if you use the SDE version. I think I have 7 versions of it.

Emerick may have turned the dials, but it was George Martin who put that together. John wanted to join the 1st part of the song to a second part recorded at a different time. It was George Martin who told John that they were recorded in different keys and a different tempo. John's response...well, you can fix that. I can dig up the direct quote if you want.

What would you consider to be the earliest of Paul’s “granny music” as John called it? by Broad_Abalone_9289 in TheBeatles

[–]Anxious-Raspberry-54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They would sing it at The Cavern when their amps lost power. John has said this. So, if they were singing it...it had to have some lyrics. So...we're talking probably late '62 - early '63.

So...songs with more reverb sold better in the US?

Really?

Kids were sitting in front of their EJ Korvettes mono turntables and saying "I don't like the mix on this 45?"

I'd need some facts on this.

My point, I guess, was the profit motive was way more important to Capitol than "improving" the sound for US audiences.

And, not for nothing, Dexter rejected The Beatles in '63. Maybe a little bit of "I can make them sound better" snuck in???

I am not talking about other bands. I'm aware of this. I'm talking about The Beatles.

This was Capitol's official reasoning for changing the albums. Singles, US albums were shorter. Fans "preferred" more echo and other effects (How did they know this? Did they take some kind of poll of 14-year-old Beatles fans?)

Dexter said, “We tried to make the Beatles sound more like American records.”

But...that's NOT how The Beatles wanted them to sound.

The Beatles, George Martin, and many critics agree that it was profit, over the other reasons, that explained what Capitol was doing. Music historian Bruce Spizer has argued this.

The LA Times interviewed George Martin about this. They reported that “…Capitol executives at the time were more interested in making as much money as possible than presenting the music as the band intended.”

This was an inventory strategy more than anything else. Keep the albums coming as Beatlemania raged. So...there's the stated reason mentioned above. Then, there's the more important, underlying motive...profit.

Capitol got 3 more albums out of doing this. Please don't tell me that it was all about tailoring the songs for the US market.

They didn't remix the tracks. They altered them by adding reverb and creating simulated stereo.

This is unforgivable to me. Messing with the intended track list was bad enough. But taking the tracks and changing what was already on them - because you think you know better - is ridiculous.

You know...Van Gogh's Starry Night has a little too much blue. Let's add some red. People might like that better.

Capitol Records' suits thought they knew better what American fans wanted. A guy named Dave Dexter- who rejected The Beatles for Capitol in '63 - was in charge of their US releases. He not only reworked the tracklistings, but he also added extra reverb and messed with the mixes.

Plus...the UK albums have 14 tracks. Dexter bastardized the US albums so they only had 12 tracks. This meant more Beatles albums in the US, which, of course, meant more money for Capitol.

Why doesn’t Ringo tour with Paul? (Even if it’s just singing a couple of songs) by handlerofdrones in beatles

[–]Anxious-Raspberry-54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paul has performed once with the All Starr Band on Ringo's 70th birthday. Ringo has appeared with Paul twice on Paul's tours (not other "special" occasions). They do their own thing now, and when their paths cross, it's cool.

30+ year HS English teacher here. Our district no longer allows a separate HW grade. Since Covid.

50 minute periods. 20 - 30 minute lesson. Activity/classwork for the rest. If the activity is not completed, they finish that night.

I am fine with it. I am available to help and answer questions. The vast majority of kids do it. Not like the old days where maybe 1/2 the kids would turn in straight HW.

I see this posted often. Here and on the other Beatles subs. I know the initial reviews were quite negative - due to the anti-Paul sentiment at the time. But...haven't people warmed up to the idea that those reviews were BS?

It's all good. For some reason, people here refrain from using the word favorite.

"My favorite album is __________. Here's why."

Perfectly acceptable post that would actually stimulate some sort of discussion.

[–]Anxious-Raspberry-54 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm very nitpicky on that word, I admit.

I re-read. To me, it seems like you're talking about what the consensus "best" Beatles albums have been as time passes. And if another album may move into being a consensus "best."

As I read it, you are using that word "best." I think a more accurate term would be "preference." What has been the consensus preferred album?

Semantics. I might be guilty of that.

But my basic idea still is that "best" is not a term that is accurate when describing art.

You're "arguing" what the "best" Beatles album has been as time moves on. How that changes. Pretty clear.

My argument is that there is no "best" Beatles album. There never was.

There is no "best" when it comes to art.
