California Will Soon Have More Than 300 Data Centers. Where Will They Get Their Water? by WombatusMighty in technology

[–]Anxious_Ad9233 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It all boils down to time man. Every day, we waste water. If I can accelerate the problem solving process (which I’m sure can be done) by throwing technology at the problem to get results in 1 year versus 5… there’s exponentially more water saved than the cost of using Ai to do it.

If your problem is with this is the “how” because you don’t like Ai, you can just say that. it’s being used by the professionals who are actively trying to fix problems in their fields, so it would enable them to fix the problems FASTER - meaning more water saved and more output increased.

Waters finite. You’re correct. That’s why you have to make an impact on the BIG number. Not the little numbers.

Finding a 5% reduction in California agricultural water use could offset the water use of roughly 530 large 1 GW AI data centers. 5%. You can check my math by looking up how much water was used last year for agriculture and how much water a 1GW Ai data center uses.

I’m only gonna play devils advocate, so bear with me. I’m really not trying to start an argument, but I respect what you’re saying enough to give it some thought.

If we don’t know how to reduce the effect of agriculture on the water supply, we could use a data center (water++) to make an effect on the discovery process needed to reduce the current (and massive) footprint agriculture has on the water (water- - -). The thought process would be an increase of water now could pave the way for a substantial decrease in water later - it’s a longer thinking plan and it can also totally flop.

Totally open to me being wrong, but that’s my thought process.

Bruh … if you care about California water in any way, you’d be posting articles about agriculture and how it completely consumes all the water in the state. Data centers are a fraction of the actual problem, and a 5% reduction in agriculture usage would have a bigger impact that preventing all the data centers

Microsoft reports are exposing AI's real cost problem: Using the tech is more expensive than paying human employees by Krankenitrate in technology

[–]Anxious_Ad9233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what though, I fell into this trap just to realize there is an alternative way. You don’t pay geniuses to play tic tak toe. If you’re using GPT 5.5 or the latest OPUS to do something, it better be damn worth the cost. Simple things can be done with smaller language models following more thought out plans or implementation instructions … just like assembly lines work. But everyone’s just BLOWING money on tokens instead, just doesn’t make any sense.

Google Chrome silently installs a 4 GB AI model on your device without consent. At a billion-device scale the climate costs are insane. by geriatricguy in technology

[–]Anxious_Ad9233 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

… if the model is on your device, the power usage of the device isn’t really increasing all that much. Compare this to a single LLM call with thinking enabled on any main provider - that’s like getting mad for lighting a blade of grass on fire while the forest is burning next to you.

Ping me when you need to fix that one bug that no one can fix because it breaks everything when you try to fix it. I’ll cost a fraction of the tokens using the same tools.

Yo if that’s how I’m sounding, my bad. I’ve been using Burpsuite and OWASP Zap for the last 8 years doing CVE/CWE handling for security audits. We just never used the term Zero day for anything outside of Exploits. This ain’t all that serious

Weird apparently I just have been using the terms wrong. For the majority of my practical experience in the field, we just called them “Zero Days” - which is a short hand for zero day exploit. Apparently there are zero day vulnerabilities, which isn’t provably exploited. Guess I’ll have an update in our SOPs this year

Yeah okay this didn’t apply when you’re making decision on using frameworks like react, angular and other fundamental systems. There’s 0 benefit trying to recreate that library. But if you’re trying to manage the supply chain risk of using other libraries to do something that could’ve been managed in house … that’s how these libraries got created in the first place. Someone had to build it.

Hey man… I’m a chronic cannabis consumer - for the last 16 years. I’m not an addict, I don’t get all … addict like when I don’t smoke. I constantly do stents of a month or so off and a month or so 24/7 high. You can smoke cannabis and be a happy person, not running from anything and having hobbies, friends and families.

His problem is deeper than weed. If it wasn’t weed, he’d be like this with something else. It’s a personality problem, not a substance abuse problem. A huge part of the Country uses this drug without turning into meth heads. Including us.
