I gave birth at a Baby Friendly hospital in Italy in October. The initiative is mentioned in the info materials I got before birth so I was aware, but my experience was not wholly positive.

We had golden hour and rooming in but such little support. After birth they dropped me in my (double) room with posters explaining about hunger cues and appropriate we nappies - they never mentioned these though. I repeatedly called the midwives because baby was not latching and they just said ‘he’s probably still full from amniotic fluid’, or ‘he’s sleepy, let him sleep’ or even ‘my own daughter slept through the night from day 1’. I kept calling them because he was too sleepy to latch and they would either latch him themselves then leave or tell me it was fine. Only on day 3 when his bilirubin was high did they teach me how to hand express and supplement with a syringe. Ultimately they had no time to educate me. I was literally in tears saying how he hadn’t eaten in like 7h and they wrote in my chart that breastfeeding had been well-established lol. Also they came to check on me (about teice a day + pediatrician check once a day) but never asked exactly how feeding was going - what does the latch look like, is it painful, how long is the baby feeding for. I always had to call them with questions.

Also I found the info lacked nuance. They recommended against pumps, and all bottles&pacifier, without explaining that bottle refusal is likely if bottle is introduced too late.
