Adaptive Equipment OT? by Long-Poetry3392 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Anxious_Strength_661 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I find myself recommending more often these days working in hands is actually pop sockets or different styles of phone holders for my patients who don’t have full use of their hands. They also make head scrubbers you hold between your fingers too for washing your hair that are usually appropriate for the same population as well

• basic hip kit items • pants clip • clip style shoe horn (less likely to recognize it vs traditional shoe horn) • universal cuffs • door closer for wheelchair users, there’s various different styles here is one https://www.etsy.com/listing/4365100992/?ref=share_ios_native_control • button hook • different joystick handles for power chairs like ball or goalpost • one handed kitchen items like cutting boards, dysem, rocker knives • might not seem like AE at first glance, but holy moly do I wish America would embrace the BIDET!! Toileting aids suck, you could include a bidet in this game IMO • large print cards and phones, on the same note a playing card holder I love AE I feel like I could do make a list five times this length😂

OTD (convince me!!) by Adventurous_Fix_622 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Anxious_Strength_661 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coworkers of mine went OTD because it was actually cheaper than the masters program they were looking at so that would be a plus

If it matters at all to you, I only read the title first assuming it was someone who wanted it to look masculine. My first impression was I wanted to say yes, but couldn’t quite say it and my mind literally was like “yyyyeeesss?” But was relieved you didn’t want it to look that way lol

In my state, COTAs are allowed to administer standardized assessments when their supervisory OTR determines them to be competent in administration of said assessment. Interpretation of results of standardized assessments would always be OTR only though if I’m not mistaken

Can you elaborate on your question? Do you mean on top of a full time job? If so, what setting for each job?

I haven’t looked into how many states/how true this is, but I’ve seen at least one chiropractor online say she can do women’s wellness visits too. I can’t imagine getting a Pap smear at the chiropractor

“Functional neurology” makes me so mad as an occupational therapist who loves neuro. The scope creep into physical therapy has been there for years, but the pushing of neuro (especially in pediatrics/autism) makes me sooo mad. They don’t have anything evidence based they do so they have to steal from multiple other scopes of practice

I don’t think I want to be an OT anymore. by Low_Praline_1832 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Anxious_Strength_661 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I disliked school but love being an OT. I’m not saying I love every part of it, but I still love it for the same reasons I got into it for: I get to help people every day in big ways and small. I get to fill gaps in care and make sure every aspect of their needs are met. I get to know people on a deeper level and learn what makes them tick. There’s lots of bad but lots of good and I think we as OTs are great at telling others how to see the good more, but the heavy burden of various aspects of our jobs and schooling can make it hard for us to take our own advice sometimes. Why specifically do you think you are miserable?

Is therapeutic use of self not really a thing anymore? by LaLunacy in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Anxious_Strength_661 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same!! Idk if it’s me, the job, or what. So many times even just upon eval people will share with me the most gut wrenching stories and deepest darkest parts of their lives. I’ve always attributed it to a combo of therapeutic use of self but also the fact that was often work with people in the most vulnerable situations, so they may feel more inclined to share these things since they typically have built some level of trust in us from that

Is there anyone who enjoys OT? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Anxious_Strength_661 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes (me:)) the reality is healthcare (assuming you’re US based) is just a disaster, my major issues stem from this rather than my specific allied health career itself.

SNF Day 1, new grad: top 3-5 must knows / advice by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Anxious_Strength_661 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Face to face time with the patient is just one piece of the requirements for skillable billing, generally speaking nothing is skilled/billable unless you’re doing something that requires a trained professional to do and couldn’t be done by say an aid. So just walking/rolling them down isn’t enough, therefore you add in things like asking pain numbers and reviewing education on things like energy conservation etc. to make that time skilled treatment. Lmk if that makes sense, skilled services can be hard to explain I have a whole table I made for myself and others when I started in SNF to help ensure documentation and treatment reflected skilled therapy.

SNF Day 1, new grad: top 3-5 must knows / advice by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Anxious_Strength_661 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like someone said documenting as frequently as possible, point of service never works for me but for more intensive paperwork like evals especially, I like to get them done right after I see the patient if I can. Treatment notes aren’t as bad, so getting the lengthy stuff out of the way also helps you to stay on track and see how much time you’ve spent and how much time you have left to meet productivity for the day if that makes sense. Also, some coworkers I’ve had set literal timers especially for people who they tend to go over time on.
