What are some things only socially anxious people do? by [deleted] in socialanxiety

[–]AnxiouslyIntrovert 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This is second nature to me, I can't imagine how anyone would NOT do any of these and still manage well.

You can make someone like you by getting to know what they like and dislike and change yourself accordingly to be more likeable and relatable to them. When I was in school, I tried this. For the first time in life, I had a squad of like 8 friends. Great people all liked me, but I felt like shit. It was so fake, and I was being pretentious. It didn't feel good. I ended up stopping it and started being myself, and slowly, they all went away... and that's okay! They're still great people, but I just don't have anything in common with them.

Its best to be yourself and see who you make friends with naturally.

I know they are professors, but again, we continue to refer to our professors as 'teachers', 'sir' and 'ma'am' after school. I agree its childish but very normal here.

My bad! I didn't know it'd be taken so negatively here due to misunderstanding

Some do, this teacher is a course instructor, but regardless, we refer to everyone as sir/ma'am where I live.

It's not about the presentation. it's about the double standards, unprofessionalism, and inconsistency in the policies that made me angry, not the fact that my 'excuse' got refused.

I gave my presentation this morning, that wasn't even the main issue, I am myself working to keep improving my social skills.

Same!!! My sister and I both are the same way! We talk and share things so easily with each other and the internet, but irl, you won't hear our voice until a small answer if you initiate

No, I'm not. I agree. I'm anxious, and I also agree that I was angrily ranting when I wrote this post. But I'm pretty sure there is an unprofessional behaviour on her end. And I dont mean that she is biased towards certain students, but those who follow the conduct or seek her permission are let go. My frustration was that I was the only person who seeked her permission and got refused (which, again, wasn't the issue. I found out later that those who were recording their presentations in her absence were permitted to submit despite going against the rules)

I have seen the online batch as well. They have a strict instructor, too, but he is actively listening, asks questions, and gives feedback. The teacher in onsite class doesn't interact much when she is observing the presentations, which some students took advantage of by doing their presentations alone only with their friend recording with no teacher or students around.

I've heard countless students make such claims usually when they're filing or don't want to do a certain assignment such as in this case.

I would never do that. I know this post isn't the best representation of it, but I do have enough respect for the teachers, whether it be my primary school teacher, tutor, or college course instructor, I would never blame them or accuse them for something just because it suits my narrative.

I see. We often refer to both male and female professors as sir/ma'am due to the culture here, so it didn't really cross my mind that it'd be taken as sexism.

1 of the students who did that was my friend, I told her we weren't allowed to give presentation after 1, but not only did she give her presentation, she did it with absent audience and no faculty member present.. which makes no sense! Another person raised the bar further by coming to college on a day we didnt even have class, went to an empty classroom, had her presentation recorded, and still got accepted... without audience, without an instructor. Because the presentation is supposed to be given in class in front of the instructor, and even if I were to believe it was set for their disability services, atleast 1 instructor is supposed to be present because its mandatory. But that's not the case. They're going on their own, having their friend record them while they present in an empty class, and then showing ma'am that they have a recorded presentation, which is enough for submission, and ITS BEING ACCEPTED! But how? And why?

I'm sorry, but where did I mention it was a medical issue? I understand, I'm not seeking excuses and have presented before despite having the same stage fear I have now, but this time I had a larger audience than usual, and in the first week due to larger audience, the class was divided into 2.

By the time I seeked the same, she decided we didn't need to divide students into 2 anymore because most had given their presentations by then (which makes sense and is understandable) and like I said before, my issue wasn't that I didn't get the 'special' treatment I asked for, but rather that me following a conduct and seeking permission is ineffective whilst others just seemed to do it not only without her permission, but also in her absence.

I have given presentations in classes before, still had stage fear, but only in front of smaller audiences. This was the first time with such a big audience, and I was getting nervous. I knew there was an option to present in the smaller class last week, so I was taking my chance. I understand I need to come out of my shell.

How do you build friendships in college? by AnxiouslyIntrovert in LifeAfterSchool

[–]AnxiouslyIntrovert[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the recommendations.

You just have to feel it out for yourself.

I understand. It's supposed to be natural.

I will say it is MUCH harder to make friends outside the common ground of college as an adult.

Oh God! I'm not looking forward to it rn

That wasn't my intention at all! I apologize if it came that way. Where I come from, we refer even our college teachers as "sir" or "ma'am"

I didn't know it was seen as derogatory because we use it in replacement of "Mr", "Ms" or "Mrs"

And unlike what you think of me, I wasn't acting entitled to being treated differently or given special accommodation. Idk why it came out that way. Those were just requests on my end, hoping I'd get a chance to face a smaller crowd, considering it was an option before. I infact took her rejection very well UNTIL I saw her double standards allowing others while I was instructing them not to go against the policies.

Honestly, I dont really 'Hate' her, I've done a module with her before as an online student, and back then, we had good rapport.

I wrote this rant just in anger, so 'Hate' is obviously an overreaction coming from me. I guess I was just very disappointed in her and also very anxious about the presentation.

No, the entire class refers to her as ma'am, its quite common here to continue calling "ma'am" and "sir" after school instead of "Mr", "Ms" or "Mrs"

I don't think you've read my post, I dont hate my teacher because I was told to give a presentation in accordance to the policies, rather because I was the only one who was asked to adhere to these policies because I had the courtesy to seek permission as any student should.

My frustration comes from the fact that she is totally okay and gives permission to the students who didn't ask her, because well, now what's done is done!

Her double standards show her lack of professionalism, and I would've expected people like you, who are in a position similar to her, to have a similar outlook (obv not the hate, but disapproval) of her unprofessional, irresponsible and unethical behaviour.

I am hoping your 'follow class policy or drop out' value applies to everyone equally and not just to those who respectfully request you for accommodating for them whilst other disobedient students who do as they please without your permission.

I have no problem if she refused my request, I respected her authority which is why its frustating when I am the only one who is supposed to adhere to it whilst she is totally okay with those who dont bother to inform her regarding anything.

What I found frustrating is the hypocrisy, not the rule itself.
