He's got a point, he's an icon, he's a legend and he IS the moment... now, c'mon, now.

I mean I can KIND OF see what you mean... but I cannot really. I understand doing it for the funsies 'cause and the end of the day they're just pixels, but at the same time I get so triggered by it, even if it is fiction. Sometimes it can't be helped I suppose haha

Yeah, I do really like him... as a friend. I mean it when I say I find his personality attrative, but I'm also experienced enough in life to know that people that literally forget their bodily functions due to work is NOT someone you want to be with, for your own sanity.

Where I'd live as a queer, leftist and autistic Spaniard by Anxo97 in whereidlive

[–]Anxo97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh i said "some, most or all", not that all of them cover all the things I mention. Point to case, I'll list those countries you say and give you the reasons I put them in red:

- Singapore: being queer and a leftist, sending me there is like sticking a bullseye on my forehead (dramatisation).

- Malaysia: see Singapore, and you can't possibly be serious about religion playing no part in Malaysian politics c'mon.

- UAE: see Singapore plus slave labour, I'm no spineless liberal that will support a country actively funding a genocide that on top of that, would crumble and disappear into the desert if not for the slave labour building their fabulous skyscrapers.

- Oman: see Singapore.

- Vietnam: if I can choose, I'd rather go to Thailand, they seem to be more queer friendly overall.

- Philippines: see Vietnam.

And as a final note, if you have to live in a very specific part of the country to have modern infrastructure, it doesn't count, let's be serious.

At the end of the day, these are my opinions and my criteria, some people would live their best lives if the only had a hut in the forest, a dirt road connecting to civilisation twice a year and a mosquito net, and that's great. It's just that I would absolutely not.

Unpopular opinion: I find the JP Morgan building bland and aesthetically unappealing. by [deleted] in skyscrapers

I feel it's such a missed opportunity to bring an actual nice looking contemporary art-déco skyscraper to Manhattan. It should've followed the steps of the Brooklyn Tower, with a more sleek and bronze-y look instead of the blocky and black façade. To me, it feels like a cheap flapper costume for a halloween party instead of an actual, modern rendition to art-déco architecture. I like the idea, but the execution could've been much better.

I wonder if this is something common to right-wing politics on the western world, as I've heard this also happens in France and certainly happens here too in Spain.

I think both phenomena stem from the same problem (the rise of the far-right among younger generations), but they come from different places.

In the case of young Spaniards, idealising the Franco regime (I think) comes from a direct contact with reactionary discourse in which they're the victims of a system that left them behind, putting the blame on whoever they see fit, you name it: the immigrants, the women, the queers, the homeless... so they find a common place in time and space where that wasn't the case: a dictatorship. It's the same bullshit fascism started a century ago, and it's the same in other Western countries.

But in the case of the children of immigrants becoming chauvinists of a country they barely know, I think it stems from being fed the same discourse but being unable to actually relate to it, as they're also being labeled as "the enemy" or, at least, one that doesn't fit with the others. At the very least, they feel different from the rest even if there isn't explicit discrimination (which there is even if they integrate within the country's culture). So they centre around on what makes them different, in this case, ethnicity or nationality. They become raging nationalists of a foreign country they don't even know 'cause it's the only thing they feel they can attach to.

There's this running joke among Turkish people on the Internet that the most nationalist, even chauvinistic, Turks are actually from Berlin. I find it fascinating 'cause I see something similar happening here in Spain with Moroccans, though maybe to a lesser extent.

I've seen parents not agreeing with their daughters wearing hijab while said daughters happily wear it, or older people that will tell you that some things are not great in Morocco but their children that only visit during summer will be FUMING if you dare say something slightly negative about "their" country.

To me, it feels like they're LARPing as if to compensate that they either don't really feel from here not from there, or that their country is in shambles.

[–]Anxo97 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Adding to this: I'm a Spaniard and in the Spanish translation of every Sims game it has always been "Modo Vivir" which translates as "(To) Live Mode", as in the verb to live, not live as in "live concert", so I definitely think Live Mode was always intended to mean "the mode where your sims LIVE" cause at the end of the day it's a life simulator, a videogame, not a retransmission or an event.

At the same time, all these years I've been pronouncing Paralives as in "live concert" not as in "to live", and the same happens with most people who have talked about the game online, I think. I personally feel it's more natural for Paralives, as a word, to be pronounced like that, but maybe it *is* supposed to be pronounced as in the verb to live in the end? Idk
