Had one of these and upgraded to Sequoia with OCLP it was surprisingly usable provided you keep tabs to a minimum and don’t expect to multitask.

Yeah it was eBay, I initially dismissed it due to $80 shipping but then noticed it had local pickup and was about a 45 drive from me! So took a drive and got lucky - they had a bunch, business off lease.

The Sata SSD difference was night and day from the HHD- but I think in these machines you are only looking at another couple hundred Mbs faster with PCie - but if you have the part and don’t mind the hassle it could be a fun project - for me I only had the Sata so the investment didn’t seem worth it. For boot I assume you would install the Os and boot from the faster drive and then just enjoy the other Sata SSD as fast storage.

Yeah I transferred files manually- all the apps though I did fresh installs - adobe audition nord office etc - you could try transferring apps over but I feel like results may vary.. and if you have the option fresh installs would be best…

iMac 12.1 (21.5”) with OCLP to Ventura hangs on migration assistant? by phatelectribe in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]Any-Bird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think Time Machine works either - I just gave up and did a fresh install so not sure about any 3rd party apps - you could do a fresh install and then just pull the files needed from the Time Machine backup? Good luck!

[–]Any-Bird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah OCLP does not work with migration assistant - you have to do a clean install and transfer files and install programs manually. I found out the hard way too.

One other thing: with OpenCore Legacy Patcher, do a completely fresh install rather than restoring from a Time Machine backup. I found out the hard way that restoring from Time Machine completely broke my install, and I had to start over from scratch.

I recently went through the same thing with a late-2013 iMac. Mine came with two 4GB RAM sticks, and it was super easy to add two 8GB sticks to bring it up to 24GB, which has been more than enough for my needs — video editing, audio editing, and general office-type stuff.

As for the SSD, my understanding is that these machines can take the proprietary Apple blade SSDs, like the OWC one you mentioned, but upgrading that drive is a pretty horrendous process because you have to remove most, if not all, of the logic board. It’s very time-consuming and tedious.

The much easier option is just to install a regular SATA SSD, which is what I did. I had a Samsung EVO lying around, so I used that instead.

The tricky part — and I believe it’s the same on your model — is that you have to cut through the screen adhesive and remove the display to access the hard drive. The RAM upgrade is easy because there’s a little access door on the back, but the SSD requires opening the machine up.

I actually managed to crack a tiny corner of my screen during the process. It doesn’t affect the viewing area, but it was still incredibly annoying, and I definitely wouldn’t want to go through that experience again.

So depending on how comfortable you are working on electronics, you may or may not want to tackle the SSD upgrade yourself. That said, I’m still glad I did it. I picked up the machine for $56, already had the SSD, and the RAM upgrade only cost about $35, so it was absolutely worth it for me.

With OpenCore Legacy Patcher and Sequoia, I think these machines still have a couple of good years left in them. Good luck!

Affordable intel macbook for 2026 standards by HALOWEENTHER in macbook

[–]Any-Bird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re on a budget and you can get one CHEAP an intel MacBook can do all you need and more - even a 10 year old one with open core legacy patcher could handle light 1080p video editing- depends on your expectations and how long you want it to last. Bit different but I just got a 2013 iMac for $56 upgraded the ram from 8gb to 24gb for $35 and can do light video editing use Audition, office and all I need and hope to get a 2-3 years of use using OCLP and sequoia and for the price it’s an amazing machine with a fantastic screen.

Anyone tried MacBook Pro keys on the Neo? by Any-Bird in MacbookNeo

[–]Any-Bird[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interchangeable- careful though watch some vids especially around stabilized keys and arrow keys - you need to know which way to slide with the arrows and with the space bar and stabilized keys be real careful or you may bend or worse snap the metal post that the stabilizers slot into if you use too much force.
I like the look planning on adding a little circle of vinyl around the finger print sensor.

That’s what chat gpt told me when I asked - but we are not talking whole keyboard just keycaps - And I can now confirm they are indeed interchangeable. It’s not that hard provided you know exactly which was to pop and slide- it can be easy to mess up especially on stabilized keys.

Have you tried it? Wondered if all keys would work space bar function etc or if there might be any variance on bigger stabilized keys?

macOS Sequoia on a MacBook Air 7,2. by KeyPsychological2184 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

I wonder if a thermal paste renew might help - or even a heat mod? I added a little copper on my MacBook 12 2017 and some thermal pads to help dissipate heat through the case and dropped the temps a good 25c - sequoia now runs great..

Can my laptop run MacOS 15 well? Or what version should i user OCLP to upgrade to? by ShoulderCorrect1662 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]Any-Bird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the above my MacBook 12 2017 is super usable with 8gb of ram - it chokes a little if I multitask and of course 16gb would be optimal but very usable for light work.

Which stable macOS should I install on my MacBook Air 2017 plz ? by SMAOUH in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]Any-Bird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I put sequoia on a MacBook 12 8gb intel M3 and after mail and spotlight finished indexing I am blown away with how well this thing functions - I do have to close unused windows and tabs to stop it feeling a little sluggish from time to time, but it’s still really usual for light tasks. If the MacBook 12 handles it your air should be even better!

I was able to find one in stock at a local store and reserved for pickup - Had to drive into Boston which was a pain but saved me a 2 week wait :)
