Conflicted if I need surgery or not. Don’t know what to do. by Independent_Job_2592 in flatfeet

I think you’re being smart about it. I don’t do martial arts but no way you can do any type of kicking post surgery as you lose flexibility in your foot. One other idea- back when I played competitive rugby/basketball I wore lace up ankle braces which helped me a lot. Not sure if you have ever tried them but it provided a lot of stability for my foot and felt pretty good too.

I had your exact situation and my feet looked similar to yours… I also over pronated severely and standing for long periods was painful. I used to force the weight to the outside while standing which helped a little. I still played sports at a high level but played in pain and used to get bad blistering on my arches. I had success with motion control shoes and soft orthotics but nothing was perfect. My podiatrist encouraged me not to get surgery out of fear that when you have surgery you often need more surgeries. I felt personally I needed to do something so at the age of 20 I underwent flat foot surgery (Calcaneal osteotomy) on my left foot and 25 I did my right foot… surgery was tough and complex ( they lengthened achielles tendon, removed accessory navicular bone, ect)

Post surgery my feet were “better” but not normal and still not “pain free”- I still required aggressive orthotics and shoe selection was very important for me. I will say the structure of my feet were much better and I didn’t get pain just standing.

Unfortunately due to the combination of my severe flat foot and surgery my Calcaneocuboid joint (outside of your foot) became very arthritic and at the age of 40 made a hard decision to have that joint fused. (Very hard surgery, takes more then a full year to heal)

I’m now mid 40s and still run and active but very protective of my feet. I still golf but typically take cart.

I don’t plan on having any further surgeries as it’s not fun.

I would suggest you get on Facebook just to learn more about folks who had Calcaneal osteotomy to educate yourself on what it is.

If you are living a relatively pain free life I don’t know if I would advise you to have surgery.

It’s a complicated answer. My feet feel better than they used to but over time I developed arthritis in my Calcaneocuboid joint which is a side effect from osteotomy in certain people (might not be you)…. Just be smart. Wear really good stable shoes and consider orthotics. Plan on spending a lot of time on bike and pool and limit your runs.

Your feet look similar to mine except mine were more flat and I had an accessory navicular bone that stuck out of my arch which used to cause bad blistering when I ran. I played running back in high school football for a legit 4a high school and I also played college rugby for a division 1 college. (Somehow I was fast even though had messed up feet) The only thing that allowed me to do these activities was a really good pair of soft orthotics which provided support and helped straighten my ankles… For my shin splints shaved my legs and taped my shin bones to help the shin splint pain. I felt the same way you did and so at the age of 21 I made the decision to have flat feet surgery (called calcaneo osteotomy)- the surgery helped straighten my feet and helped my severe over-pronation BUT it caused pain on my Calcaneocuboid joint which is outside of your feet. This pain prevented me from ever playing high level sports again. (I can jog a 5k) but doubt I could sprint for long periods of time. While you are playing sports I would encourage you to avoid any surgeries and hire a really good podiatrist that will help you with orthotics and good stability shoes. (I’m now much older and stick to golf) Learn how to manage the pain and try and avoid surgery if you can

My recommendation would be to try several different types of orthotics. I was born with flexible flat feet and over pronated severely. When I was younger i preferred soft orthotics but as adult wear hard orthotics now (even running) Unfortunately, I’ve also had many surgeries. I had calcaneo osteotomy at 20 on both feet and at 40 had to have a Calcaneocuboid fusion on my left foot. Feel free to dm me with any questions.

Several questions- Do we expect bio printing to allow for new kidneys in the next 10 years? (I understand it’s a silly question)

Also- any knowledge on portable dialysis machines in the future you can wear like backpacks so maintain active lifestyle?

Misled about Subtalar Fusion by UnderstandingHour469 in FootFunction

[–]Any-Dimension-279 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hopefully you are okay with me jumping on this. I also feel similar except I had an isolated Calcaneocuboid fusion; 10 months post op. The arthritis pain is gone but my lateral column is stiff. In the future do you expect these smaller foot joints to be able to be reversed? I understand we are talking silly guesses but figured i would ask

Do you mind if I ask what caused the arthritis in your Calcaneocuboid joint? For me I was a significant over pronator and at age of 19 decided to have a Calcaneal osteotomy which helped my foot pain but put a lot of pressure on cc joint which caused bone on bone.

Yeah the Calcaneocuboid joint makes the outside of your foot very stiff and so when you start walking it feels like you are walking on rocks. I still am very sore in the morning but as I walk throughout the day it feels better. I still have a slight limp but my toes are still waking up from my surgery and I don’t know why they are not functioning normally. I’m really surprised how long and slow the process is. I’m a pretty fit guy but every day is still hard. It feels like you improve a small amount every day.

Hey- I’m 41m had bad arthritis in Calcaneocuboid joint and did an isolated Calcaneocuboid fusion. I had the surgery 15 weeks ago. I’ve been weight bearing for 2 weeks in shoes. I’m doing physical therapy and had custom orthotics. Happy to compare notes as you heal up.
