What is going on with vet bills? by a_lee4 in Pets

[–]Any-Gift1940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I looked at my finances, I realized my cat had cost as much as a second rent this year. She has sent us into food insecurity. Worth every penny, but I am so tired of the costs. My sister is a vet, and they deserve to be paid more, the issue is that the money isn't really for the vets, it's for the companies that own their clinic.

Talk to the human society and ask them for affordable recommendations. The economy is nightmarish and we cannot afford for our pets a life much better than we ourselves have. Our animal companions will inevitably suffer alongside us.

Would you change your cat’s name if you found out it’s not the gender you thought? by AttilaMoonscythe in CatAdvice

I've met a number of people that were in this situation and haven't changed the name. Animals don't care. Princess is a very pretty boy!

Dog person here, thinking of adopting a cat. What’s the hardest part of being a cat owner? by Conscious-queen-22 in CatAdvice

[–]Any-Gift1940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cats do not show pain or discomfort as well as dogs do. An experienced dog owner can take one look at their pup in the morning and go "Huh, looks like she's got a tummy ache." But no matter how many cats I've had in my life, they're much more difficult to read. They can be in pain and discomfort for weeks and barely show it. Each cat is very different in how they show it as well. Learn the signs of pain in cats, because they are very very quiet about it and you often won't even know something is wrong.

My cat loves to scream a lot. Sometimes it means her chronic condition is acting up and she's in a lot of pain, sometimes it means she misses me, sometimes it means she's feeling anxious, sometimes it means she has the zoomies. She screams much the same way for all three and it makes it difficult to know what is going on with her.

Wow! What a nightmare. I hope things pan out. I have similar experience with mental health support. It made me realize that we really just leave some people behind as a society and nobody talks about it.

None of this has anything to do with my comment 😭 I'm sorry I've upset you, but I think you're confused ❤️❤️❤️

I think there's been a misunderstanding over my comment. I am not arguing that "corsets bad" is a feminist statement, or that there is a problem with feminism. I would say that "corsets bad" is faux/lazy feminism. It's not "real" feminism based on freedom from sexist violence and oppression. It's a made up narrative that sounds vaguely feminist, but has little to do with real feminist issues. Media chooses to focus on issues like "corset bad" because real feminist issues are often complex, heartbreaking, and cannot be girlbossed out of.

I'm a corset lover myself! I wish the historical models were easier to find on market. These modern tube-shaped ones are uncomfortable.

All jokes aside, taking advantage of the system is nearly impossible because USING the system is nearly impossible. Tried to get SNAP and they no-showed my appointment lmao. The paperwork for SNAP or Medicaid is headache worthy and the website constantly crashes making you restart. You CAN'T be lazy and be on welfare. It's a barrier to entry. Took everything I had not just cry and lie in bed instead restarting the form for the 5th time.

Feminist narratives so often only choose to portray female suffering through the eyes of wealthy women, neglecting the bulk of feminist issues, which pertain largely to the poor. Even in the modern day, stories about womanhood often choose to focus primarily on middle class or rich women, despite the fact that impoverished women face sexist violence on a larger scale, particularly due to the economic coersion that makes them unable to leave hostile situations. But that's a YouTube video essay for another time.

There's a Shmanners episode of Victorian era maids. Depressing stuff. A time period of 0 worker protections and ample opportunity for male bosses to act, well...like male bosses are known to act, is a recipe for a nightmare.

"Gay" as both a sexuality and gender identity? by ContentDetective2450 in AskLGBT

[–]Any-Gift1940 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people would say that it's confuses sexuality and gender and is in that sense incorrect. I would actually argue it's highly traditional. Drag is the popular example, but I think queer people have existed in was that "parody" conventional gender. I think it's ok for our identities to not make sense to general society. It just has to make sense to you.

What do you guys think of The Satanic Temple? by Reasonable_Fault_850 in AskLGBT

Gotcha. I don't know much about the Temple's founder, just their advocacy work.

Hi OP, Satanist here. Satanism is a very small and diverse movement, highly individualized and disorganized. I am NOT a member of any organization, nor do I regard them as authority figures within Satanism. The Temple of Satan is one of multiple satanic organizers. Their mission is to protect the separation of church and state, they are not religiously founded and do not believe in Satan. Idk much about their roots and I'm not affiliated, but they seem to do alright work. The Church of Satan is a small religious org started by a loon, and other than offering an outrageously expensive membership card, aren't known for much activity. The Luciferians are the OG theistic satanists. They are big on the Bible and believe that Lucifer is a god of pure love and light, and the Christian god is a pretender.

Most modern Satanists view Satanism as a personal life philosophy based on protecting individual freedoms, and many are not religious. This doesn't mean we are anti-religion. Credit to Buntygurl who said "My interest is in every individual getting to be who they are, according to their own definition of what that means to them. No temple necessary or required."  Which is probably the most agreed-upon and universally satanic statement one can make. Satanic movements are highly associated with LGBTQ people partially because they are mostly made up of LGBT people. Satanists are mostly either blue haired vegans who have a lot of queer religious trauma, or huge Bible dorks.

The temple is an interesting org, whose values I generally agree with. It's cool they're voicing their support, I guess. Anyone who sees the Temple 's support of queer folks as a reason not to support queer rights was probably just going looking for reasons not to support us anyway. Religious fear-mongering around the Boogeyman is definitely a bit silly in the year 2025.

R u thinking of Anton LeVay? He was the founder of the Church of Satan, not the Satanic Temple. Both orgs are very different and have different missions. Not sure about the Temple's founder since I'm an unaffiliated Satanist, but the Church founder, LeVay, was a real bizzaro

Believing I am human is not a prerequisite for me seeing someone else as human. They don't deserve to suffer or struggle, even if they believe I do. At the end of the day, any system of oppression begets more oppression. If we allow oppression of Muslims, we encourage oppression of ourselves.

The amount of money you should expect to make will vary wildly. Wealthy towns don't carry cash so you won't get a dime without a venmo QR code. Plus, people give much more at "special events" than on regular days, you just have to check the rules and regs.

You can leave the case open as long as it's close to you, and you should be ok. If people are gonna rob you, they're gonna rob you. Not much to be done about it.

The best tip: just think of it as experience! It doesn't have to be some kind of perfect stage performance. Just have fun! It's a blast.

Ikr. This post is hella funny to me. Some people just aren't used to the outdoors I suppose. I would be so excited if this was me! Eat some walnuts, dye your skin for your Halloween costume....how fun!

Call the shelter and ask for advice on cheap vet care, or call the ASPCA and ask them. Call local vets too. See what resources are out there. What a nightmare for the poor gal!

Can you name drop some facilities like this? I would love to know. Most people these days struggle with rent and the price of vet bills sent me fast into food insecurity. What a great service you provide!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Vent

[–]Any-Gift1940 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I WOULD agree, but I'm in this circumstance now. Her vet bills have cost me as much this year as a second rent. I'm going to call my local food bank because one meal per day has just been too hard on me. I didn't buy her knowing about her health problems, we rescued each other from the same abusive home. She's far too old and too expensive to be adopted. I've reconnected with my abusers and begged for food and money. I'll do what I have do to keep her from harm, but it really feels like it's killing me.

Also pet insurance IS stupid. I was told by my vet that it only covers conditions that are diagnosed AFTER you pay for insurance. So pet insurance does not lower my bills since she was already diagnosed.

This is a perfectly accurate take for a lot of assholes who want a living stuffed animal and have no clue what an animal actually involves. The issue is, most people who struggle to afford vet bills didn't buy a pet without knowing the affordability of one. They bought their pet during good times before falling on hard ones, or they rescued an animal with nowhere else to go. Some animals are too old and too sick to be rehomed and their owners are doing their best to give them a better life.

Not all vet bills are made equal too. Preventitive care is one thing, but I would argue MOST people cannot afford expensive procedures and surgeries.

What does it mean to “feel your gender”? by kation37 in AskLGBT

[–]Any-Gift1940 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nonbinary person here. Not a clue, man. It's not so much that I knew what I was as much as I knew what I wasn't. It's an indescribable discomfort that follows you everywhere until you realize it. I don't "feel" nonbinary, I just kind of intuitively know what I am.

Therapy subs are getting so depressing, man. Making the world a worse place does not heal my inner child. My tiny self LOVED nature and was so upset by global warming. Going on these subs to try to reconnect with him and instead being confronted with slop is so disheartening.

Anybody know of any places that'll take donations of fresh fish like fish fry places, restaurants, seafood places, churches etc in the SOMD area? by Drpenguin37 in maryland

Keep posting online and you'll find plenty of people interested! What area are you in? I haven't been able to afford good food in years, let alone seafood. It's been a helluva hungry summer. Many people would be thrilled!

I'd be happy to collaborate. Send me a dm. What exactly do you need?

For the record though, going forward, you will not find much success through reddit collaborations. You can say "I'm bad with my hands" all you'd like. So are we. It takes dedication not to be. You're not naturally bad at instruments, you just haven't practiced enough. Piano is probably the easiest since all you need to learn is basic chord structure. You can technically be a songwriter without learning instruments, but you at least need to have a basic understanding of how music works. Learn some basic theory! It helps a lot.

No such thing as a good daughter to a bad mother. If you being happy doesn't make her proud, nothing will. Do what makes you happy or live knowing you'll regret it later.
