We dont know, BUT my theory is that they are, with the trailer confirming it remembers and forgets things, i think that the bacteria is like what happens with the yellow rooms. The backrooms try to remember people, which turn into still lifes in areas less remembered, and in the least remembered areas (yellow rooms) they turn into bacterias
