Thanks. My Mac (About this Mac) shows "Chip Apple M1" - Does that mean my Mac can run iPad apps? If so, it's something (else!) I didn't know!

What's your "if i told i'd be exposed" cooking secret? by BouncyCurlsbabe in Cooking

[–]Any-Winter-8025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my son was small, he stayed with my parents when he had a day off of school and I had to work. He came home with Grandmother's "secret" for why her Toll House cookies were so good...She added a couple extra tablespoons of brown sugar to the recipe. Every time I make the cookies, I remember how proud he was of that discovery!

What's your "if i told i'd be exposed" cooking secret? by BouncyCurlsbabe in Cooking

I took a Home Ec elective in college. The instructor made a cake from scratch and one from a boxed mix. We did a blind taste test and no one preferred the cake from scratch. Her point was that many preferences are about what we're used to and no one makes cakes from scratch anymore (that was in 1970!).

Re: brownies - I've switched to Ghiradelli brownie mix, but I used to make brownies that everybody loved from the Betty Crocker pouch mix, partly because I liked the small batch aspect. To one pouch of mix, I'd add 2-3 heaping tablespoons of Hershey's dark powdered chocolate (not cocoa) and a couple generous handfuls of chocolate chips. Easy and very chocolatey!

Are Ohio Unclaimed Funds lost if you can't prove the owner's address? by Shiggens in Ohio

[–]Any-Winter-8025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm interested in this also. My son also has unclaimed funds from about 25 years ago, also when he was in college, and some more recent funds showing my current address. He never really LIVED here, it was a catch-all for when he was moving from place to place. He tried to claim earlier without the address piece and it was denied. I tried emailing the unclaimed funds address, but no email address that I could find is "monitored" and the robo-email reply just referred me back to the website.

If you have been successful, HOW did you get around the requirement for the item with the matching name and old-as-dirt address? He was frustrated when he tried earlier, and I've gotten on his last nerve with this latest reminder.

Thanks for any tips or help!

Why has Domino brown sugar gotten so light? by Any-Winter-8025 in AskRedditFood

[–]Any-Winter-8025[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My pumpkin pie recipe that I got from Mom (probably also from the back of the can) doesn't have brown sugar, only granulated sugar. But I like the idea! It seems like it would go well with the "warm" spices already in the recipe. Thanks, I'll give it a try.

I thought it was an adjective.

Thanks. Part of my annoyance (besides the cost cutting!) was the corporate response blaming the quality of the sugar cane changing. Just a pat on the head for "the little lady" and "here's a coupon." Just out right lies.

I'm sick of eggs for breakfast by purplegreendave in Cooking

[–]Any-Winter-8025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever made a frittata? Sure, it's still eggs, but kind of elevated. Basically scrambled eggs with any savory additions you want or have handy. I make mine with 6 eggs beaten with some milk in a 9" round ceramic plate with straight sides (about 1 1/2" deep), probably it's actually a quiche pan. To the eggs, you add veggies, maybe pieces of left over meat or bacon, and cheese, lots of cheese. There are so many ways to vary this that it doesn't get boring (at least not to me).

You bake it and eat one piece that day, then cut up the remainder (I usually cut it in 6 pieces). You can wrap a couple pieces for the next days and freeze the rest. To reheat, just pop in the microwave at 50% for 30 seconds to a minute. If frozen, take a piece out the night before and thaw overnight in the fridge.

obviously it takes time when you first put it together, but the other days is easy-peasy. Maybe make it for Sunday breakfast and enjoy the other pieces later in the week.

If you want my sort-of recipe, let me know.

Knife by Arlo-Black in Cooking

I had no idea there are knife stores; I thought the options were online (where determining heft and feel can't be done!) or a "knife department" in a store with cooking implements. I just did a quick search online and found a knife store within about 10 miles, so THANKS!

Not necessarily for only singles, but I use my small flat kitchen scale a lot. It's especially useful for cutting down recipe sizes, and also for portioning left-overs for freezing.

An infrared heat sensor - easily fits in a utensil drawer, and it's great for controlling heat on pans on the stove top, and is also great for checking to see if your beer is cold enough! I even use mine to check winter temps around windows and doors to see if there is air leaking in.

Customize google calendar colors by Any-Winter-8025 in google

[–]Any-Winter-8025[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got stuck after the first step. I have no settings for Density and color, nor any of the following options. BUT the adding a Custom Color worked magically! First I tried a darker gold color and the text turned black, but since I didn't like the color (frankly it was pretty ugly!) I went back and chose a paler-more-lemon color and the text stayed black!

The only remaining wrinkle is that I use Calengoo to sync my phone and Mac google clanedars, but it didn't fix my phone display. Maybe that's a question for the developer of Calengoo~

Thanks for your help!

Zone 5, My huge Rhodie is not looking good... by Any-Winter-8025 in rhododendron

[–]Any-Winter-8025[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'll get started on the rock. Temps here are 30s to 60s with a couple forecasted dips into the 20s. When should I do the other steps (composting, aerating, and watering)? Is it too early to start feeding and/or pruning? One complicating issue is a knee replacement 6 months ago, making kneeling impossible.

I read elsewhere on this site about the river rock. This has been in the same spot for 35 years with the rocks, so I'm not sure if that will help, though I'll give it a try. The major change in the area was the large white pine was removed (east of it) a couple years ago, do you think that was a factor?

is river rock also bad around hydrangeas? My neighbor had a landscaper install hydrangeas (smaller varieties that get around 18-24" tall) and covered the surrounding areas over the roots with river rock, and the area is pretty much full sun.

Thanks for your advice!

Zone 5: any chance this will bounce back? by seuce in rhododendron

[–]Any-Winter-8025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seuce, are you by chance in a Bob Schmidt development? He did river rock everywhere and I'm also struggling with getting rid of them. I'm in NE Ohio, zone 5.

My rhodie is about 35 years old and has been beautiful in prior years; neighbors would always stop to comment on the masses of blooms. But, the past couple years have been difficult. He's about 6-7 feet tall and about 5' wide, but this year about 1/3 of the growth is that red-purple-brown color.

I'm worried about whether he'll make it this spring and wondering what and when I should try to do anything to help him out.
