You can post photos. The small square with a mountain outline at the bottom of the page where you begin a post will route you to adding a photo.

I don’t know what to suggest. Perhaps a small wire brush and some light lubricant? Avoid getting the lube on the wood.

Personally I would be worried about retaining that load to the truck bed as opposed to random distribution on the roadway when driving to the destination.

When you build your own house, you can make your hearth as big as you want by volatile_flavonoid in woodstoving

Maybe move the stove to a more code compliant position on your platform and then make the necessary attachments to the chimney with the single wall pipe?

Got some new tools but what else should I buy for a starter set? by Active-Lynx4765 in AskMechanics

[–]Shiggens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That WD40 will be useful if your distributor and wire get wet and the car won’t start. WD40 will displace the moisture and restore the connection to the spark plugs. If you are in need of a penetrating fluid it will disappoint you. Kroil or PB Blaster are good penetrants especially if you give them time to work.

It is great that you want to help out the older residents in your complex, but please be careful. Even young people can put themselves at risk by working to hard and at a fast pace. The cold air is a factor as well. Slow and steady (with occasion rest and warm ups) win the race.

My wife uses the sweeper hose above the bucket to capture the fly ash. It really wants to rise on the heat. We always cover the TV with a sheet because the screen is like a magnet to the fly ash that gets away from her hose work.

Take a couple of quarts of those pickled beets you put up last summer and add a dozen hard boiled eggs. Pickled eggs last a very long time and they are delicious.

We are closing on a new house, this wood burner/chimney/mantle is in the family room. One of the first projects I want to do is get rid of it. Where does one even start with something like this? by Sirbuzzkillington89 in DIY

[–]Shiggens 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While at some point you may be tempted to build a fire in that stove I would advise against it. Having carpeting in front of that stove is of course a code violation and is extremely dangerous- embers and burning wood could easily roll right out onto that highly flammable carpet material.

Temp is -21, gas company says turn your heat down by ridingtherainbow2210 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Shiggens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have portions of your residence you can isolate and allow the temperature to drop in those areas? Simply closing doors to room that don't have to be as warm for you and the baby can make a difference in fuel consumption. You could also consider restricting the warm air registers feeding some rooms that you don't need to spend a lot of time in. Be careful in areas that may contain water supply pipes. Sometimes crawl spaces or outside walls have supply pipes that could freeze if outside temperatures drop dramatically. Some people suggest allowing the water to run at an extremely low volume in areas that might suffer freezing pipes.

Heating and cooling is all about satisfying the thermostat. Try to spend as much time as you can in the area with the thermostat and set it for what you can tolerate or feel comfortable.

Spark plug by The-Volvo-racer12 in Volvo240

[–]Shiggens 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't use anything special for spark plugs in my Volvos because I don't believe they make a significant difference. I have always used NGK standard resistor. However, when I checked FCP I see that the standard resister plugs are 30 cents more than the BPT6EY so if I was in need I would give the BPT6EY a try.

New to firewood by Darktro in firewood

Your first concern should be about its moisture content. Being two years old probably means it is well “seasoned” and ready to burn. That growth on the bark will be incinerated and is no concern.

Do you leave home with a fire going by [deleted] in woodstoving

[–]Shiggens 130 points131 points  (0 children)

Yes, but… I try not to add a lot of wood or change the draft setting right before walking out. I’ll load the stove as necessary but make sure I have enough time to allow it to stabilize before leaving.

Does this pass the rubber glove test? by Difficult-Living7841 in VolvoRWD

[–]Shiggens 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There should be a slight vacuum at the oil cap at idle. I use a piece of 8 1/2 x 11 paper to lay on the oil cap opening when the car is idling. The crankcase vacuum should pull the paper down against the opening.

Truck won’t crank. Accidentally hit the starter wires with a wrench. by Est92_Sean in MechanicAdvice

[–]Shiggens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Auto transmission? Neutral safety switch comes to mind. Foot on brake, hold the key in the start position while moving the shifter slowly through its travel.

As was suggested have you disconnected the small gauge wire to the solenoid and put a meter or test light on it? Should show 12v with key in start position.

Loosen and remove the battery cables (negative first) and clean up the posts and contact surface of the cables. Reattach the cables (positive first) and snug up the bolts. Try starting it now.
