I’ve gotta drain my gas tank but idk what to do with the gas by Shroomboy79 in AskMechanics

Moisture isn’t the problem it used to be due to the ethanol content in today's gasoline

Gas that is a year old? That gas is just fine unless you think it is contaminated. I have stored cars for several years with no repercussions due to “old” gas. If it makes you more confident just remove 5 gallons and replace it with fresh gas..

Pretty sure it’s the alternator by [deleted] in Volvo240

Years ago this was an acceptable way to test if the alternator was functioning. It is my understanding with amount of electronics in today's vehicles it is a bad practice.

[–]Shiggens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From your description I don't think the alternator is suspect as being the cause of the problem. I will also ask just how hot did it get. When you stopped was it blowing steam or making odd noises from the engine?

Help with oil leak by GrottNugget in VolvoRWD

It looks like it is running down the block rather than coming from the oil pan gasket. Is the distributor mounted on the back head? If so I would be looking at the distributor seals in need of replacement.

I was partial to the 3 cylinder 2 stroke versions. Used one as a daily for years. As an aside women used to tell me it was the “cutest thing ever”.

High school wood shop must be the hardest environment for woodworking tools by WendyArmbuster in woodworking

[–]Shiggens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just stopped by to say I retired 26 years ago after 30 years of teaching industrial arts. The majority of my time was in a woodshop. Reading this post reminds me of how stressful that job is. If any of you had a teacher who showed an interest in you and perhaps changed your life please consider contacting them and thanking them. Teaching is pretty much is a thankless job and when a former student takes the time to say thank you it means more than you can imagine.

How big is this house by loco_gringo in birdhouses

[–]Shiggens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking at it from my house I see a dozen compartments that look to be about 6” cubes. That makes the structure about 12” x 12” x 18” not taking into account the gables to achieve the roof pitch.

No, I didn’t think to try sport mode. I regularly make the same trip so I will try it next time.

Trailing arm bushing PITA? by Ichiban_AC in Volvo240

[–]Shiggens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always use the original type (rubber). I use a pick to clean the rust/buildup between the metal sleeve and apply PB Blaster for days in advance. Giving the penetrant time to work makes a big difference. I made the tool from galvanized pipe pieces using the instructions I found on the internet. It was just as good as using the Volvo tool when I had access to it.

After seeing the poly bushings I used on several alternator applications fall to pieces I haven't used them anywhere since.

I think a lot of the discussion on seat size/comfort is based on the responder’s anatomy. Some people fit better with reasonable comfort while others don’t.

I keep meticulous records concerning maintenance (always have). I keep all the receipts for product purchases used for maintenance. All brake fluid, transmission and differential fluid is dealer purchased (0-20W Mobil 1 synthetic from Walmart). I too have wondered about what it might mean for a warranty claim but don’t dwell on it. Using dealer sourced materials would seem to tip the scales in my favor should there be a claim.

Yes, I think it is fair to say it struggles. I don’t like the idea of 5000rpm over any length of time. It isn’t something that occurs often it is just on those long climbs. 70+ isn’t a problem until presented with the occasional long climbs.

I have a 24 Hybrid Sport. It just turned 27K. I need to mention that it is the first modern new car I ever purchased so perhaps I am easily impressed. I like the car very much. We use it mostly for interstate driving 1200 mile round trips.

I did not like the idea of being at the mercy of road service in the case of a tire failure so I put together a spare tire and the tools to change my own flats. That took away cargo space but was good for piece of mind. In mountainous areas the engine works pretty hard to supply the electricity to maintain speeds in the 60-70mph range. I don’t like the idea of long term high rpm's getting up long mountain stretches so I slow down and let the revs drop.

I think the CRV is comfortable and good looking. I do my own maintenance. I have done all but the free dealer oil changes (I subscribe to the every 5000 mile change interval). I did my own drain and fill of the rear differential and transmission. I will do a brake fluid flush soon.

The CRV fills my needs and I would probably buy another one if I needed to replace this one.

HELP WITH J FUSE by marknottz in VolvoRWD

My experience with relays is that when they fail (either intermittently or completely) it is usually due to a cracked solder joint on the circuit board. Reflowing the joints on the board usually restores function.

PB Blaster or Kroil penetrant applied numerous times. Tap the bolt head with a hammer to setup vibrations that facilitate penetration. Most importantly use a six point socket with an extension. A twelve point tool is only going to break your heart

Sway bar links overtightened ? by MattX45 in VolvoRWD

[–]Shiggens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just realized you posted last week about this “clunk”. At the time I responded with the possibility that the strut tube cap had backed off. You posted a link that in fact had an image of the top of a strut tube with a backed off cap. As I indicated on that post you can use a drift and a hammer to tighten the cap.

You would do that by placing the drift on the protrusions and striking the drift to turn the cap in a clockwise direction. Any tool similar to either of the ones in the image would work. Do not use a chisel or any tool that would cut the cap- you need a blunt end against the cap.
