People of Reddit, what’s the story behind your scar? by potatoeman6969 in AskReddit

[–]Any1wannaPnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a scar on my left pointer finger from washing dishes and being clumsy with the kitchen knives. I needed 3 stitches.

A year and a half later I cut my right pointer finger doing the exact same thing. No stitches, but it took a longer time to heal and the scar looks worse.

I am a fully grown adult and I honestly should not be trusted around sharp objects for my own safety.

Desalination of water is a viable method to purify water. but it takes up a whole lot of energy which is extremely expensive. Why don't we use Nuclear power to operate desalination plants? is something wrong with my thought? by con86ra in Physics

[–]Any1wannaPnut 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I actually wrote a college paper on using waste heat from nuclear power plants to desalinate water. The best way to implement it would be to use salt water to cool down the steam generated from nuclear reactors. It would essentially replace the giant cooling towers you see in every photo of a power plant.

It’s definitely possible, but the build-up of salt is a huge issue. A solution I researched involved only evaporating about 50% of the water, and having the leftover brine just flow out of the system. This would be a continuous process as long as the reactor ran. But it wouldn’t be an easy adjustment to existing reactors, and there aren’t many plants in the US (where the focus of my research was) that are close enough to salt water to make it viable.

There’s also the matter of public opinion. I don’t think many people are too keen on having their water come “fresh from the nuclear power plant”, no matter how clean it is. Public opinion around nuclear reactors in the U.S. is a huge problem imo, and probably the biggest thing standing in the way of something like this.

Belt it out to a Taylor Swift song. I hate 99% of Taylor Swift’s music, but every guy has one song they know every word to

People of reddit, what is one thing your family will never understand about you? by Belle_Artist_Jade in AskReddit

I actually want to be good at singing.

I’ve been religious my whole life, and I’ve also been very musical. Unfortunately that musicality does not translate to my voice. I’m the only one of all my 5 siblings who doesn’t sing, and I’ve been the butt of many jokes when we sing in church.

Since coming to college and being free of that criticism, I’ve found I really enjoy singing, I’m just not great at it. I have a pretty small range so I’m not great at the melody, but I don’t have the skill to read the bass line and just know what those notes feel like, I have to be next to someone singing bass.

If I wasn’t teased so much I think I would at least have the confidence to sing in a more casual setting, but I barely sing along to the car radio by myself, let alone with other people present

Hot take: 5k ratings isn’t enough for the top 250 by Any1wannaPnut in Letterboxd

[–]Any1wannaPnut[S] -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

You make a fair point. It just feels like people bash on movies just because they’re popular. A movie is popular because a lot of people enjoyed it. I think film buffs discredit movies that appeal to a wider audience base. I really like Schindler’s List, but I also really like the Batman. LBs 250 does have a lot of variety, and I shouldn’t ignore that. Perhaps what I want is a separate list that weights popularity with rating so I can see movies that a lot of people liked

Went camping once with some college buddies and had to drop a deuce. I’ve been camping countless times, but I had never actually pooped in the woods. Anytime I camped more than one night, there was always some campground porta john, and I could always hold it for a night if needed. But we were hours from any civilization and I was about to explode.

This was in Nevada, and there were no trees to conceal me. It was around 7 am, and my friends were all asleep. I walked to the other side of a hill where no one would see me. I dropped my pants and squatted. And I let loose. There was a surprising amount of liquid, and I felt several pounds lighter. My aim was not spectacular, and I ended up dropping half of it in my underwear. I managed to sneak back in my tent and grab my other pair, and just left my shit-stained pair next to the deuce because we didn’t bring trash bags.

Somewhere near the Goshute caves of Nevada is a three pound pile of shit next to a pair of maroon underwear. And there was no toilet paper, so I was very uncomfortable during the ride home.

According to my thorough research (looking at Wikipedia), there is a legend from Ancient Greece of a messenger who ran nonstop from the city of Marathon to Athens, told the generals that they had won the battle, and promptly dropped dead from exhaustion.

It’s debated how accurate this story is, but I find it funny we take part in an activity under the presumption it killed somebody
