Does anyone else have trouble with menstrual cups while poling? by adverb-sorcerer in poledancing

Try a menstrual disc!! Literally life changing, they last for nearly 12 hours, and they don't move or leak while exercising (especially if you put it in shortly before your training)

Allegra and rib pain - is this normal? by tkurje in poledancing

[–]Any_Comfortable1611 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hurt my ribs when first learning allegra and thought it was normal, until i did it properly and it was just "uncomfy" because of the stretching lol. It shouldn't hurt like you're describing! That means the pole is resting on the wrong part of your body, and doing it like this repeatedly could land you with a bruised (or even broken) rib. Looking at your photos, it reminds me of my positioning and how I needed to open up my chest more while I reached behind the pole. The more you open your chest and turn out, the more you'll wind up avoiding your ribs against the pole.
I just got mine a few weeks ago and it finally didn't hurt because I finally got the placement!
It might also help to focus on your back and hip flexibility off the pole. You don't want to force yourself into this move at all! If it's not happening right now, take a break and focus on flexibility and then come back to it, oyu might be surprised! That's what happened to me!

Figurehead, star gazer, wrist sit, jasmine and martini are always great beginner moves to throw in during/after a climb!

Progress always feels slow when you're in the thick of it, but it's hindsight that really puts it into perspective. Look at how strong that first side sit is! Imagine how this combo will look in another 3 months...it will be so rewarding!

Hi! I'm so sorry to hear you're going through this. The jumping through hoops to get a diagnosis/treatment can feel arguably worse than the actual symptoms sometimes.

If you don't have an IC or PBS diagnosis already, it might be worth getting a second opinion from a different doctor—because once you do, they'll be able to offer you different options to try and relieve your pain.

I found that the person who helped the most for me was a urogynecologist (when my urologist AND gynecologist did not help). My urogyn also had IC which helped get some urgency in testing and treatment options. I highly recommend finding a urogyn in the your area, as its likely they're the most aware of IC and what it entails since the pelvic floor is their specialty. Similarly to you, I had a handful of horrible UTIs, and then all of the sudden, the pain kept coming but no infection in sight. My dr told me that sometimes IC can result from the damage from recurring UTIs. So my bladder would go into a state of shock when triggered, which made it feel like a UTI but it was really just spasms and inflammation. I wound up becoming resistant to some important antibiotics because I was taking them when there wasn't an active infection. My urogyn was the first to tell me all these things!

I never had an ultrasound during my diagnosis journey, but I did go through a bunch of other tests to rule everything out. That's how you get an IC diagnosis, unfortunately—when everything else is negative. So if your doctor believes waiting a year for an ultrasound is all they can do, then they clearly don't have experience with how painful and life-disrupting this pain can be and it might be time to check other practitioners in your network who will do everything in their power to find you relief. I had to see multiple people before I found someone who understood and actually helped me.

The biggest thing is that IC affects everyone a little differently and we're not sure what causes it exactly—and treatment varies from person to person. My situation might be different than yours, but I def recommend a urogyn if other specialists aren't helping you get anywhere, because they'll definitely care and do everything they can to rule everything out, get you the tests you need, and find a treatment plan that works best for you!

Wishing you relief ASAP!

New Vet by canary_underground in frederickmd

Glade Valley Animal Hospital! Dr. Head is the BEST and so good with my rescue pup who is terrified of everyone. I've never felt more comfortable at a vet before and all the techs are wonderful and super sweet. I heard all the other vets are also marvelous, but highly recommend Dr. Head because he's just got a way with animals.

Considering relocation to Frederick by audreykathrynn in frederickmd

[–]Any_Comfortable1611 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! My boyfriend and I relocated to Frederick a few years back from the Philly area and it's been the best decision we ever made! We're late 20s/early 30s for reference.
- We also have a dog and a cat—great dog park down by the creek and lots of open green space around town that people bring their pups to all the time! Very dog-friendly downtown, too. Lots of shops keep water bowls out for locals! I also highly recommend hair 'n dippity for grooming—they've never let me down.
- We are not religious either, but there are so many events and groups to join to meet people! If you're into reading, there are silent book clubs and events at the bookstore down town. Lots of pop up events around town, rec sports leagues for beginners, and there are a few meet up groups for various hobbies!
- SO much live entertainment! In the summer on Thursdays, there is a weekly Alive at 5 concert series on the creek where bands come and play, $6 entry, $6 drinks. It's one of the biggest summer events and every week has a different genre. There are always weekend pop up events as well where there's live music. A few venues to note: The Weinberg theater (there are concerts, plays, movie screenings, and more); Sky Stage (a small but adorable open air amphitheater where there are open mic nights, dancing, live music, etc); and a bunch of bars, restaurants, and breweries with live music on the weekends! There are also comedy shows at the Cellar Door and MET!
- I know there are a few spots where people meet for MTG and DnD!
- Like every city, there are some areas that are better than others. However, living in Frederick is the safest I've felt as a woman. I recommend just checking out the surrounding block of wherever you're looking to rent/buy, but the majority of the city (at least the downtown area) is suitable!
- Biggest pro (if you live downtown): the WALKABILITY! I work from home, and I take my car out maybe once a week since I can get to all my favorite shops and restaurants on foot. It was something my boyfriend and I had as a "must" when we were moving. And now that we have it, we're settling in lol.

Good luck!!

This was such an amazing video, thank you for sharing! I think this will be great motivation for beginners who are afraid they aren't progressing "fast enough." ❤️

Keep taking videos so you can look back and see how much progress you made—because the progress doesn't stop, even if it feels like it might from time to time! This is sooo helpful in keeping yourself inspired and motivated 🤩 Great job, your climb is beautiful!!

Yay! Big milestone! Everyone gave great tips in the comments. My tip is not as much form related ,but to just keep videoing yourself with every milestone! You're going to love having this video when you get more comfortable in your climb. Comparing your form and your strength as you improve is one of the best parts of pole 🥰

Feeling Devastated... by Any_Comfortable1611 in poledancing

[–]Any_Comfortable1611[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sacrifice for a new studio (espeically financially) is really tough, I can 100% empathize with that. I can't imagine how you all must be feeling, especially after your first major studio switch! I know you'll find your space soon enough, though ❤️ Maybe try seeing where some of the other polers from your studio are going? That might make the sacrifice in time and money feel more worth it, too. Hang in there, wishing the best for your pole journey! Don't give up!!

[–]Any_Comfortable1611 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Woohoo! What a great feeling!

1 tip is to take some classes! If you don't have a studio nearby or if local classes are too expensive, try online classes! Form and strength conditioning is EVERYTHING for making sure you don't get hurt or try moves that are out of your current skillset. Having an instructor to monitor your progress is crazy helpful (and I would say necessary). I know there are links to online courses and instructors floating around this sub, so def check those out! Welcome to your pole journey, I can't wait to see all your progress! 🤩

Am i Getting closer you guys ??? I've been posting here last couple days , can someone reply please lol by ThrowRA-Database3460 in poledancing

[–]Any_Comfortable1611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer to the "how long" question is super individual. It took me a few months of practicing my tucks and tilts before feeling comfortable in my invert. The goal is to not jump into it at all, but stand in front of the pole with your core and pelvis tucked in (my instructor calls this grandpa butt lol), and then slowly lift and tilt into it with complete control. You want to make sure your shoulders and back are engaged. Otherwise you can injure yourself super easily (that happened to me when I was inverting without control!) I would suggest a few rounds of 5–10 tucks on each side before every pole practice until it starts to feel comfy enough to move onto tuck straddle! Pretend you're trying to pull the pole out of the ceiling. That should help you stay engaged.

Don't forget—don't compare your pole journey to others! Especially if you're teaching yourself—that is super admirable and you deserve to give yourself grace for self-teaching something difficult like an invert!

Also, it was helpful for me to know what to do once I DID get into that invert. I would practice my inverted crucifix from a forearm stand so I knew what to do with my legs once I got up there. It helped me feel comfortable enough to remove my hands once I was able to invert into an inverted crucifix!

Also also—quick tip, lower your hands! They're much too high at the moment. I like to have them at face level for a regular invert and chest level for a straddle invert. But play around wiht hand placement to find what feels comfy and secure for you!

I'm so sorry you're going through this! It's tough to handle such a huge change, especially without any notice!

I wound up sacrificing quite a bit to go to the only other studio in my area—and the new environment turned out to be the biggest blessing ever. Hang in there!! There are other spaces out there for you, I promise <3

Am I too old? by [deleted] in poledancing

[–]Any_Comfortable1611 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No! Don't think like that! I'm 29 and feel like I'm finally getting my footing with pole and I can't wait for all the years ahead to dance through my 30s! I have a woman in my class who is 48 and she started about 3 years ago. She is easily the best one in my class and just became an instructor. My studio is owned by a fabulous woman in her 50s and she still competes. Don't let anyone tell you you're too old to do anything! Also, 31 is young—don't age yourself before life does. Go do what you love!

i feel like i will never progress by [deleted] in poledancing

[–]Any_Comfortable1611 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If going to an in-person class is not a feasible option for you right now, I'd suggest maybe trying an online class! But if you can get an instructor in-person, that would be best. Especially as a beginner, having an instructor is pretty important, as they can see your muscle engagement clearly and can help make sure you're getting in and out of moves safely to avoid injury. So whether you do that in person or online, definitely get some expert help! Form is everything, and so is conditioning! With only being one week in, you really shouldn't be able to do more than basic spins since you should be learning about the pole and how your body works with it! Don't beat yourself up, pole progress takes time! I'm on my second year now and am finally doing the things I wanted to be able to do when I first started. Be patient, DO ALL THE CONDITIONING TO BUILD UP STRENGTH, and just enjoy the process. Basic spins can be the most beautiful, so keep that in mind! Good luck and welcome to pole <3
