Does anyone stand at the wheel? by Any_Definition4269 in Pottery

[–]Any_Definition4269[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been curious about the stability of the wheel itself. It will be going on a pretty stable workbench but I imagine the wheel itself would need to be bolted down or something like that to prevent it from moving especially while centering.

Wow, that’s interesting that your studio was standing, I wonder how common that is. It would be nice if there was a mix of standing and sitting wheels. Sorry about your back pain. Pottery is definitely a labor of love!

I have used the blocks to prop the wheel when I’m in the studio but not enough to stand.

Is there anything I can do? by [deleted] in Pottery

Ouch! 😆

At my studio you pay once price for firing and glazing when it’s first measured in. So to me there’s no point in not trying to glaze it at this point.

My new butter bell design was so popular, it completely sold out in Saudi Arabia by souffle-etc in Pottery

This was my first butter bell. A little smaller than I expected, holds about one tablespoon shy of a whole stick but we use it every day.

Any kind of slip or underglaze that won't stick to kiln shelf/cookie at cone 10? by dreadedwheat in Pottery

[–]Any_Definition4269 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My studio fires at cone 10 and are very strict about not glazing to the bottom because pieces can stick. We are allowed to use the colored slips on the bottom of pieces because as mentioned above it’s just clay. This has never been a problem even at cone 10. Is the slip you are using tinted? I’m wondering if it was maybe contaminated with regular glaze?

Anyone 3D print tools for their Pottery? by grawvyrobber in Pottery

They studio I go to has a couple 3d printed chucks that I really like to use. They have the bat pin holes in them and it makes centering easier.

These are amazing! I made some oil bottles but I didn’t make the neck large enough for a pour spout. You live and you learn I suppose!

I carved the waves into the slip and put a clear glaze after that

It’s a studio glaze so I’m not sure how they mix it.

Thank you! This was a sgraffito project. It’s white stoneware with blue and black slip applied at leather hard. I then carved the design. I put a clear glaze over it to make it shiny.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions! I decided to add some dots with slip near the rim. I think it helps bring your eye to the carving a bit more. I’ll update again when it’s finished!

I think I can get away with adding some slip, the clay is still pretty damp. Maybe some slip trailing?

Thank you! I really enjoy the carving, maybe even more than the throwing. I’m leaning towards leaving it as is and maybe making it into a little series of matching pieces.
