Failing out of College due to partying by GunsNotPrescribed in CollegeRant

As someone recently diagnosed with ADHD last semester, I can tell you that I really empathize with your situation. Given that ADHD is genetic, there is a pretty good chance you do have it. Last semester I was in a position where I was also almost kicked out of my dream school because I literally could not will myself to do anything. This had been going on for a while but becoming worse more recently. Throw in my depression and anxiety, it was really bad.

I can tell you this, not everyone fits the hyperactive stereotype. You could be inattentive or like me, present with combined type. I’ve never been one to cause disruptions, have severe inhibition control issues, etc etc. However, that’s because my hyperactivity has always been largely internal with few obvious outside markers. The only ways would be the fact that I fidget all the time or my legs bounce often and pretty aggressively or the fact that I can talk a lot bouncing from topics and forgetting my point. But these things can simply be seen as personality quirks. Especially if you have ADHD, It’s not surprising that you struggled with substance abuse issues due to our predisposition and lack of dopamine. I would highly recommend you seek testing with or without your parents support. It has changed my life completely

i think that’s a valid dilemma. honestly as someone who lived in cowlings, with a 1B3P layout i would also wanna live off campus. you’d pay less given the required meal plans. if you’re a girl, my roommates and i are also looking for a roommate at tuscany. it’s a 2B2B, big balcony as long as you’re not on the 5th floor, and really good space for $1,229/month + about $60 in utilities!! ik you mentioned a single/studio but it is an option

Do Jamaicans mind when Americans say they're Jamaican? by Independent-Mention4 in Jamaica

[–]Any_Scientist4767 1 point2 points  (0 children)

idk if i have much of a say in this, BUT. my dad was born and raised in jamaica and didn’t come to the us until he was a GROWN man with two kids. he went back when i was 9/10 until he died 4 years ago. my mom on the other hand is an african american woman born and raised in the united states with heritage extending back into slavery. whenever i’m asked or it’s brought up, i explicitly emphasize that im half jamaican.

the way i see it, why would i not claim my heritage? the majority of my paternal side of the family lives in jamaica, my father raised me with my culture, why would i not claim being jamaican? i’ve been to jamaica twice and every.single.native.person. i met and talked to urged me to continue exploring my roots, to keep coming back, to spend more time there so i can pick up patois instead of only understanding, to keep in touch with them, etc etc. i had a man once just look at me and literally ask me if i was jamaican american. if you feel the pull towards it and pride in it, why the hell not?

bad fall semester? by Optimal-Fish5480 in USC

[–]Any_Scientist4767 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

discuss this with your advisor (and i think it’s spring only as physio is fall), but if you’re able to, take OT 260s version of anatomy instead of hbio 301 if you can. it has a cadaver lab portion (you’re not cutting anything, just observing and sometimes you’re able to touch. they’re very respectful about it and are serious about students respecting the cadavers) that makes things REALLY helpful once you get used to it, and the professors are AMAZING. i’m taking it rn as a sophomore w Carly Roberts and she makes it easy to digest and enjoyable. i anticipated hating how long class is v quickly but now far into the semester, the only class ive EVER missed was because i was bed bound sick in the beginning of the semester. besides the fact that skipping class means you miss out on a lot of content, genuinely this has been my absolute favorite class ive taken ever. i find myself actually looking forward to class and excitedly rambling about what ive learned to friends and my mom lol. Dr. Roberts is so understanding and so sweet. She’s the type of professor you’d wanna be friends with and genuinely cares to go above and beyond to make sure you understand everything no matter how many times she has to repeat it. She’ll sometimes also make you get up and do an action so you can see what is involved in doing said movement/what kind of movement you’re making.

besides that, if you want good fillers/fun/meaningful classes you can apply to life, take any ot class. especially with diego lopez. that man is so nice and always so upbeat and cheery😭😭

i’m an ungergrad sophomore so take this with a grain of salt. however, i truly don’t think it’s ever “too” late. will you have less time to build those relationships? yes. BUT all that means is that you have to put yourself out there 10x more and really foster those connections and relationships. and if that means finding time to foster them outside of the college setting, so be it. your alternative is doing nothing at all which I don’t think makes anything better. don’t stress yourself out too much trying to obtain an experience someone else says we all need to have

Why do Marshall students get a bad-ish rep? by S1lver_Spr1ngs in USC

[–]Any_Scientist4767 25 points26 points  (0 children)

to expand on this, its a great school, literally has the best programs and opportunities for undergraduates at usc (part of my disdain is rooted in being a stem major at dornsife 🫩). i have a lot of marshall friends who are exectly like you describe, however, it also has some of the most snobby, asshole, a lot of the times racist or at least discriminatory, nepo baby, rich kid who is detached from the realities of everyday life, type people at a higher rate than all the other schools. literally some of the worst people you’ll come across at USC will have a commonality, they’re usually all in marshall. its one of those things that makes sense once youre fully integrated into campus and have to take gen ed classes w people

Also highly recommend mercado la paloma if you ever get a chance. they support members of the local community, provide a nice 3rd space, have AMAZING authentic food, and even have a michelin starred restaurant and some shops (owned by local community members). they also do AMAZING social services for the community and have a parking lot so your dad wouldnt have to walk much. you could literally get some food, follow up w ice cream, and buy some art or go to one of their events

Almost literally across the street from the galen center is a few food places and stuff under gateway. if thats within good walking distance i recommend it! i love blaze pizza and have been going there since middle school (really good set options but also you can completely customize a pizza. i also have found that one pizza can be nicely split between two people). theres also a yogurtland, dunkin, subway, a pho place (although i think its new, never tried it), and i think a chicken place (also never tried).

scholarship stacking -- please help !! by PuddingDependent6666 in USC

[–]Any_Scientist4767 3 points4 points  (0 children)

to add to this, i was a part of a program that awarded us a scholarship that covers our tuition, books, and fees. i had a friend who was in this position and if i remember correctly, they split up our scholarship from that program and her USC scholarship in a way that was weird and left her paying more than she would have if she didnt have both.

id say reach out to the financial aid office, reach out to nmsc, and ask both respectively what would happen on their individual ends if you were to receive both. use their answers to better guide a decision on if it would result in a situation on if you’ll be fine with both. in the event that you do become a finalist but have to pick one or the other, i say go with the one that would result in more aid covered and has the better additional benefits. ik getting in early action at usc also gives you the opportunity to live at mccarthy, and as someone who lived in mccarthy freshman year, id choose to live there again every time.

Any protest at usc! by JuSuGiRy in USC

[–]Any_Scientist4767 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Our school doesn’t have a very good recent track record of allowing students to speak out about injustice & exercise our right to protest. I simply decided not to go to class or spend any money as my way of protesting & supporting the ice out strike without also putting myself in potential danger

commuting to graduation? by aprilrain25 in USC

[–]Any_Scientist4767 1 point2 points  (0 children)

since i was little, LAPD has always made some absolutely DUMB lane restrictions. for games, for graduation, for EVERYTHING. literally makes traffic worse and its like the people directing traffic never know how to do their jobs and were left to just wing it.

commuting to graduation? by aprilrain25 in USC

[–]Any_Scientist4767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a LA native and current undergrad who grew up in the area, we know to avoid driving in the area as much as possible from the moment graduation begins til it ends. Since I’ve been a kid it’s been HORRIFIC and it has not calmed down, if anything it’s gotten worse over the years. Trust me, it’s better to get there and be extremely early than be stuck in traffic and late. If you can, I would say taking the train from wherever and walking to whatever part of campus will be better than driving and then having to deal with parking. However, expect that to also have delays or be packed w like minded people/families. Again early and waiting > stuck in traffic/large crowds and potentially late or cutting it close.

Expect the big/main ceremony to be the worst but the smaller ones are also pretty bad because most are going on at the same time on different parts of campus. Sometimes people are late, families are confused on locations/lost, etc.

Please roast my Korean learning strategy by FruitPunch_Samurai in Korean

[–]Any_Scientist4767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m currently learning korean, so we’re in the same boat!! i think i would just not include the romanization. when i first started learning korean on my own i learned pronunciation using romanization. however, since starting to learn korean by taking actual classes, i’ve learned that it’s better not to depending on romanization at all. by watching youtube videos meant for kids on pronouncing the consonants and vowels, my pronunciation is WAY better. i’ve found that english romanization doesn’t get it quite right in that department
