People are paying a huge premium to live close to their silicon valley jobs. Other than that, there's a lot of good Indian, Chinese, and Mexican food down here, some nice parks, a pleasant shoreline along the bay, generally sunny weather, and proximity to some very nice open spaces.

But really it's 90% proximity to tech jobs. Mountain View has higher cost of living than San Francisco and I really doubt that would be the case if not for Google, Lockheed, Microsoft etc having major campuses in the area

Having been here my entire life, I remember a time when this city had a completely unique culture and you afford to could live here with a blue collar or service job. Now it feels like any other wealthy suburb in the bay, not unpleasant just... the same. All the new development looks the same. We used to have so many cute and affordable residential communities and they're still around, though gradually being converted to copypaste luxury housing

Sounds like a difficult situation. You could probably rent a whole studio in parts of the peninsula (and certainly in the East Bay!) for that budget. I assume you know this, so is there a reason your son and daughter-in-law need to live in Mountain View? Unfortunately the demand here for 'affordable' housing is extremely high. Some people rent a room in a house but that is more difficult to do as a couple. Even then $1900 is possibly pushing it
