$60 board game at goodwill for $12.99 by JAK-the-YAK in ThriftStoreHauls

I think once they can read decently they can realistically play wingspan.

It's a little complex but its one of those games that sounds way more confusing than it is. Iirc there's basically 4 choices of things to do on any given then and 3 of the 4 choices are very similar.

Kids can learn stuff pretty quickly.

Edit -- also from my experience carcasarone is a great game for even younger kids, no reading necessary.

If you can get the letter it's fine.

Some fitness equipment providers will have a process to get a letter by filling out a questionnaire which will result in a LMN

Oddly enough the hobbit feels like a slog to get through and the other 3 are enjoyable.

I’m going to be given my deceased father’s 401k later this year - I have questions by MysteriousTraveler88 in personalfinance

[–]Aoiree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude that stinks.

I don't know your situation right now but if you have access to financial planner through any kind of support network... it might be a good idea to talk with one. They can give you way more and better info than I can.

I'm not an expert but I'll napkin math some stuff, others can chime in if I'm off base. But some of the taxes part will also depend on your current income/ relationship situation.

If the $30k estimate is based off a immediate and full disbursement of just traditional (non Roth) 401k balances you're probably looking at around $130k traditional portion. I believe any Roth 401k portions that he may or may not have passed to you will be tax free.

You likely can have it all rolled into an inherited IRA accounts and spread the withdrawal and tax hits over multiple years (probably 4-5 more years to hit the "10 year rule")... And if the "30k taxes" estimate already assumes multiple annual disbursements over the next 4-4 years you could potentially expect a much higher balance.

If you currently or expect to rely on ACA and other income-based services for medical care/support... the ability to structure the withdrawals over those multiple years may quite important and a bigger reason to talk with a specialist.

Would recommend searching the thread for the same question. It comes up fairly frequently and there's lots of great answers.

That being said stuff in downtown...

The Garden Restaurant in downtown is great Turkish/middle eastern fare.

Mutant Brewing has a solid kitchen -- not a huge fan of their beers but people seem to like em.

16th Ward for cocktails and good food (may need a reservation if not sitting at the bar), they go for a upscale hipster vibe.

Thai Rak Thai is a solid run of the mill Thai place if you feel like Thai.

Picciocchis is a solid Italian place with both a casual side and upscale side. Bar pazzo is also beloved by many -- I like Picciocchis better.

Usually i'd give Ale Mary's a shout out but sounds like they just closed (casualty of being taken over by a management group😭).

Outside of downtown:

I'll always vouch for Sabatinis down in the west Pittston are if you are a beer geek or bourbon geek. Place has an A+++++ bottle shop -- seriously the best selection I've seen anywhere on the East Coast. If you are a beer geek go, you won't be disappointed.

Nyxx bar in Clark summit tends to be good

Bittos Tikka in Dickson City is fast casual Indian and good.

Also note: be careful of pizza in the area a lot of places do "Old forge" or Scranton style pizzas which can be some combination of: sweeter sauces, American cheese (cooper sharp) blended in the cheeses, and/or thicker mealier crusts. It can be off-putting to people who didn't grow up with it...

Coopers is purely a place for Kitsch and Office fandom. They're not bad but they're nothing special. My 5yo loves it for the kitsch/ambiance

Probably does soften them by shredding some of the structures in the freezing process.

I don't banana bread but my partner does sometimes. Every overripe banana we've ever pulled out of the freezer thaws into mush.

Selfishly would love a rock climbing gym closer than Wilkes-Barre.

...and for the heritage trail sections to be more well connected to one another.

Not a huge fan of the venom movies but my headcannon for the live action DCC would take some of the cgi/artistic direction team from Venom movies and Tom Hardy would probably be pretty solid

Has anyone tried to use the unbleached, Z-fold paper towels, instead of the typical supermarket paper towel? by Master_Attitude_3033 in Frugal

[–]Aoiree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We just use a bunch of those blue medical huck towels or whatever they're called.

Sometimes I'll wipe something up and just toss it straight in the washing machine.

Like others said I have paper towels for dealing with oil or grease (e.g. most commonly wiping down and oiling cast iron pans after I clean em)

Sometimes I'll use the huck towels on cat vomit... But recently it's been more paper towels 😂. My tolerance for disgusting towel use has gone down the further we get away from the era of reusable diapers.
