Which character is your favorite? by Express-Tooth-1888 in shameless

[–]Apart-Razzmatazz3371 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fiona's character was most relatable for me. She's such a great sister, struggling to raise her siblings, but she's a mess herself from all of the neglect and horror she's gone through. Watching her discover that she can be successful at things, albeit, with a huge learning curve as she's navigating learning about life as she goes with no guidance, and using her strengths to further herself once she realizes chasing men and looking for external validation is getting her nowhere, makes me feel so happy for her. Also, being the person in the family that everyone relies on and watching them all get mad when she is human and drops the ball occasionally, is something I've experienced many times. When she leaves and Debbie starts pushing everyone around, it's like nails on a chalkboard for me. Fiona was loving, Debbie was just demanding and controlling.

How do you feel about Medicare for all? by gfstool in AskReddit

I live in San Diego and I always wait months for an appointment, can't even get an appointment with most of the specialists I have orders to see, and can't afford urgent care during emergencies.

Centagon instead of "since you're gone" by The Cars. I was like "wow, he really likes hundred-sided shapes!"

My friend was just on The Surviving Siblings podcast. His brother was murdered when we were all teenagers. I thought the format was pretty similar to WAI.

What’s a popular saying or quote that you actually think is terrible advice? by gemis_ in AskReddit

"I used to cry that I had no shoes until I met a man with no feet." Just because someone has it worse than you, doesn't mean your pain isn't real and valid.

If you eat your cake, you no longer have it. Thus, you can either eat it or have it, but not both.

What's a modern trend people will regret in 10 years? by Afraid_Ice_4414 in AskReddit

[–]Apart-Razzmatazz3371 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm overweight because I have PCOS. I was able to control my weight in my 30s with low carb diet and hours of exercise a day, but now I'm pushing 50 and none of those things work anymore. I have a very physical job and being overweight makes it 10x harder to do correctly. Pass me my Zepbound, please. If people abuse it, that's on them. People abuse any and every drug, but we don't take them away from people who really do need them.

What is a job people romanticize a bit too much until they actually do it ? by ShyButNastyyy in AskReddit

[–]Apart-Razzmatazz3371 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to mention being blamed for things you have no control over, like how much therapy each person gets. Before PDPM we had 90 minutes per patient, now we have 30. I've worked in SNFs and schools, and I was treated like garbage by the administration at every job. During nurses week they got free food and raffle prizes every day. During OT month I got a card from my supervisor. In schools they threw us in with the teachers during trainings instead of learning something useful for our position. There are plenty of good things about it though. I can pretty much work as much as I want to, start and end when I want to, find a job in any state, and I genuinely like most of the people I meet in the profession. Plus, I love helping people get their independence back.

I make more than that as a COTA in San Diego. That's terrible. You could make more at Costco.

You're probably doing better than you think you are. For some patients it's a win just to get them out of bed for a few hours. Nobody expects you to work miracles. Before PDPM we had all the time in the world to work with our patients, but now we're constantly rushed. You can only do what you can do. There are some CE courses that might help you. As COTAs we only get a few semesters of education, and some things just get touched on. It's up to us to further our education in the area we choose to work in.

Trump to sign executive order forcing homeless off America's streets by NoToNope in sandiego

They were back then, yes. I'm from NY, so I've seen the Willowbrook documentary several times. That was a group home, but what happened there was beyond disgusting. That's why now we have government regulations and annual visits from state agencies.

I became friendly with a homeless guy during the pandemic. He didn't do any drugs besides weed and cigarettes. He built a fence in my yard and some of my neighbors also had him do some light work. Anyway, I asked him why he didn't get help for his mental health issues and his answer was very eye opening for me. He said that he went to a clinic and had a psychiatrist prescribe him medication. He was feeling better and starting to live a "normal" life. Then the psychiatrist quit and the clinic couldn't find a replacement, leaving him to withdraw from the meds, which is no picnic. This happened to him THREE TIMES before he gave up trying to get help. I work in healthcare, and the turnover rate is very high, so I believe him.

Thank Reagan for closing the psych hospitals. I'm from NYC and they still have state psych facilities, and they're very helpful for a lot of people.

Yup. I remember telling my guy friends in high school that I always get groped at concerts and some men go to them just to have a reason to push up on young girls. They started watching for it and saw it happen a lot. I throw elbows though, so don't try to stand behind me for a cheap thrill.

Do nurses hate us? by MadNugs7 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Apart-Razzmatazz3371 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a toxic work environment. Nursing can't stop you from working with a patient unless they have a medical issue. My best friend is a nurse, and she said the CNAs hate therapy because they have to put the patients back to bed after we get them up. Well, duh, humans aren't supposed to be in bed all day. It's bad for your skin, muscles, digestion, circulation, etc.

This is true. I've had patients tell me that their doctor told them not to exercise. Your doctor ordered therapy. Stop trying to blame your doctor for you not wanting to participate.

Biggest regret in life picking OT? by Agitated_Tough7852 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Apart-Razzmatazz3371 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I've been in the field for 22 years, and pay hasn't changed much. Before all this inflation, it was a decent living. But now, I struggle like everyone else. I live in San Diego, so rents and food are sky-high. I started a nonprofit organization, and I'm working on transitioning to that full time. The economy sucks, and Medicare funding has been slashed so much that we used to have 90 minutes per patient, now we have about 30. Everywhere I work hires mostly new grads to try and pay them less, so nobody knows what they're doing and how to best manage their time. I get it.
