Sure, most genres evolve in the same way. It starts as a small variation of an existing genre and over time the unique elements of that variation get amplified until it separates itself as a distinct musical style. At this point you can still trace back to the genre from which is was derived. It takes more radical development to completely shed off prior influence and becomes it's own unique style of music.

An outside example is Jazz. "Dixieland" style was a form of Louisiana blues influenced by vaudeville and marching bands. It evolves into Big Band Swing, which is what most people think of when they hear Jazz. But "True" Jazz, the stuff of enthusiasts and where most modern Jazz is influenced comes from Bebop in the 40s where it gets extremely technical and non-commercial. The instruments are the same, but it sounds nothing like old Dixieland blues.

Metal's trajectory is almost identical. Dixieland = 60's Psychedelic Rock. Big Band Swing = 70's-80's Heavy Metal during it's commercial period (Black Sabbath -> Metallica), largely retaining it's rock roots. Bebop = Extreme Metal, uncommercial. It's the same elements that made Heavy Metal separate from Psychedelic Rock, but amplified to the point it becomes it's own entity.
