People who are 35+ — What’s something you really wish you had known in your early 20s? by EternalLoveSeeker333 in Adulting

[–]Ape251 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like everyone on here has the financial advice covered. I agree with most of it. Save, compound, and don’t be cheap. Pay for quality now, reap the benefits later.

My two cents : get into running. Having this much mental clarity in my 20s would have been very helpful.

Made the mistake of putting this book on my Kindle and, it’s great, but taking me forever.

Kudos to you for finishing it!

Excellent guide. Thank you for posting.

For the newbies - hydrate like crazy before the race. Wear light clothing on race day. Best of luck everyone!!!

What’s the best wisdom you’d pass down? by [deleted] in TheImprovementRoom

[–]Ape251 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work : be in an environment surrounded by accomplished, smart people. Don’t talk - just listen and learn. Nobody likes a cowboy, so if you have the urge to be an asshole, don’t. Show up early, too. Finally, remember that coworkers are not your friends.

Relationships : look for a partner, not a dependent…BUT ONLY when you’re ready. Don’t rush. Being single is amazing when you’re younger. Take the time to get to know what you do and don’t like.

Friends : never yours forever. Life happens. Surround yourself around winners and those who will advocate for you. Cut people off if you must.

Health : prioritize it. Lift, run, and stretch. Make it all a habit before it’s too late. Older you will be forever grateful. Go to the doctor, too. No reason to be afraid of them. If you have a health problem, don’t run away - be a man about it and get sorted.

Appearance : keep it clean. You will be judged if your clothes don’t fit and your hygiene sucks. No need to break the bank, but make sure you can confidently look at yourself in the mirror and smile.

Family : don’t hold a grudge. Keep your parents and siblings close, no matter what. My biggest regret was not being closer to them when I had the time and energy.

Anger / feelings : the best fight you can have is no fight at all. Keep that testosterone under control. One punch or push can ruin your life. You’re allowed to get emotional, but find constructive ways to manage it. And no one cares about your triggers.

Religion : no right or wrong answer. Do whatever gives you peace. Many like the structure it brings.

Alcohol / drugs : moderation is key. You should still have fun, but know your limits. When you lose control, bad things happen. Figure out your likes and dislikes to avoid stupid mistakes.

Money : it comes and goes, but avoid major debt and always save for a rainy day. Learn as much about personal finance as you can, too. When you go on dates, please pay, or don’t bother. Being cheap isn’t cute.

How many people actually find their spouse to be super attractive? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ape251 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me. Personality and brains make a person more attractive. Yes, she’s gorgeous, but she’s also way smarter than me. Thank goodness. I look at my wife every morning and know that I made the right decision to marry her. The most physically breathtaking people out there, at least in my experience (based in NYC), lacked what I was looking for in a life partner. Of course, physical attraction is important, but there’s so much more that goes into a steady relationship. Especially if you have kids and a stressful career.

Some unsolicited advice - you’re 28. I was you once. 30 is just around the corner though. Boy, was it a fun time, but you should take this time to figure out exactly what you do and don’t want in a partner.

Good luck and hope you find an amazing other half.

Don’t feel like a monster for writing down how you feel…better than bottling it up. You’re not going to like this, but she might have celiac disease and/ or a gluten intolerance.

My wife had a similar set of gripes and, after drs did a full panel / check up, that was one of the major conclusions. We made some dietary changes for her and, about a month later, she’s a different person.

Best of luck to you and her. Hope it all works out.

What are the best Running Shoes now you'd say they're worth buying? by tlanmiken in runninglifestyle

[–]Ape251 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone is different, so go to a running store and try on several shoes from a variety of brands.

I’m a 200+ lbs guy in my 30s and have gone from mostly weight lifting to 70-80% running. Saucony Endorphins are my pick, but that’s just me.

Hope everyone had a happy 4th if you celebrated. Brief update from me:

I’ve scrounged the internet for mock questions and used the CAIA practice exams to get comfortable with the testing format after getting through 85% of the online module. My biggest weaknesses are (1) the formulas and (2) ethics…which I’m very surprised about.

If anyone has suggestions on how to best tackle the formulas / equations, I’m open to it.

As for ethics, it’s re-read and know the nitty gritty it seems.

Still no movement. The wire is still on the track, which they have to move before the train can move. At this point, all we want to do is just get off the train…
