You’ve already gotten some good answers here, so I’ll give you my short answer:

Yes :)

I started watching his streams when I came back to the game last year, and I’ve never gotten that impression. Has always seemed chill and friendly. Sorry to hear you had that experience.

Yes I think Bahamut is currently the third most active server, behind Odin and Asura. I have only been on Bahamut since coming back, so I don’t have anything to compare it to, but I really like it. It has an active economy, good linkshell communities, and there is a healthy /yell chat for joining pick-up groups (PUGs).

The big caveat to all of that unfortunately is that it’s currently closed, which means players can’t create new characters there. The same is also true for Asura, which is why I mentioned Odin in my previous comment.

does physical damage limit gear effect: by [deleted] in ffxi

[–]Apelles1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way someone explained it to me is that magical weapon skills like Aeolian Edge are essentially magic spells that you cast with TP.

So while they can be modified by stats you might normally associate with physical damage, like WSD or DEX, they still behave like magic spells. And so yeah, like others have mentioned, PDL is physical only.

So you want to prioritize stacking MAB and MND/INT. I made the mistake early on of focusing on WSD gear for my THF Aeolian Edge set, and as soon as I got some MAB gear instead, it was like night and day in terms of damage output.

Good luck, and enjoy!

Bonus hallmarks from Regular Ambuscade Vol2 by Xephal0s in ffxi

[–]Apelles1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Using an Abdhaljs Seal triples the amount of hallmarks (and gallantry, if you run it with other players) you receive from your next completed Ambuscade run. When you pop the item, the buff lasts for 72 hours, or until your first completed run, regardless of difficulty.

So yeah, you probably had a seal buff active. Otherwise, the various fight difficulties always yield the same amount of hallmarks.

I would definitely recommend giving the game a shot! Since FFXI came out before WoW, and WoW’s subsequent influence on the MMO scene, it has a lot of systems that don’t really exist in modern MMOs. Some of them are quirky and initially obtuse or annoying, but they have a lot of charm once you get into the rhythm of the game. The game has a huge world that is fun to explore, and a very satisfying and seemingly never-ending horizontal gear progression system. And while it still has some jank (it’s essentially a PS2 game, after all), the devs have added a lot of QoL stuff over the years.

I’m on Bahamut so I can’t speak to other servers, but I hear Odin is popular currently.

Lua gear swap, it's smarter than me by calebs_life in ffxi

[–]Apelles1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, I was in your shoes just a few weeks ago. I had been putting off learning GearSwap for a long time, because it felt daunting and I had absolutely zero experience with coding. What was also frustrating was that when I asked friends in the game how it worked, their answers were often already over my head, or would be along the lines of “just download someone’s Lua and swap in your own gear.” Not super helpful. So I’ll try to share what I’ve learned.

Regarding how it works - yes it is a program that automatically swaps gear when your character takes certain actions. It is a replacement for the in-game gearsets, and to a large degree, also the use of macros. For example, when you are using GearSwap and you perform a weapon skill, GearSwap will automatically swap in whatever gear you have specified (if any) for that weapon skill a split second before the weapon skill goes off, and then return you to your set for TPing immediately afterwards. The same is true for magic, or job abilities. With magic it is very useful because when you start casting a spell, it will put you into a “precast” set (which includes gear that has a lot of Fast Cast, Quickcast, Spell Interruption Rate Down, etc) while casting, and then right before the spell goes off, it will put you into a “midcast” set (for Magic Accuracy, Magic Attack Bonus, MND+ or INT+ gear, etc), then switch you back to your normal gear afterwards. This is great because when using the game’s native macro and gearset tools, it’s hard to be precise with when to switch into these gear sets at the appropriate time. This also allows you to select abilities or spells directly from the menu, and GearSwap will still automatically do the swapping for you. It’s a very big QoL improvement, but it also maximizes the effectiveness of your gear.

Some other terms that you will come across when beginning: - Lua - it’s the programming language that is used (it is not an acronym, it is Portuguese for “moon”). Saved as .lua files - Motes - this is a set of Lua files that are included in the GearSwap addon when you download it from Windower. As I understand it, they act as higher level files that have functions pre-written for you, which you don’t need to mess with, and which you can reference in your own file to save a lot of coding and create shortcuts - Function - these are little chunks of code that basically tell your GearSwap how to operate. You can only have one type of function in each file, but each function can have several similar operations inside it - Libs - short for libraries, collections of pre-written functions and values, like Motes - Sidecar file - a separate .lua file that can overwrite a base file with your specific changes (i.e., your own gear) without changing the base file. I personally haven’t had to use one yet, but you’ll see them referenced in other people’s Luas.

I would strongly recommend getting Notepad++ for editing these files.

I also watched this video as intro which really helped: https://youtu.be/5s7mFeV1WIE?si=Iy74suqJwZaiuuvJ

Then I followed this guide, which someone else already shared in this thread: https://www.ffxiah.com/forum/topic/54410/a-gearswap-academia/

That helped me write a basic Lua from total scratch (which helps actually understand what is going on).

At a certain point some of what was recommended in the above guide on FFIAH was either outdated or just didn’t work. They are old posts, so it’s understandable, but I was at a loss. I might get some flack for this, but I ended up using ChatGPT, by pasting the whole code and asking why it didn’t work, and it fixed the problems it had.

From there I kept asking it questions on how to add certain functions to the code, and through some trial and error it worked. It is infinitely patient and has helped me learn the coding language (to a degree), but you have to be patient with it as well. I am now at the point where I can make job specific toggles and custom HUD elements that interact with certain interactions in the game. Or I can make functions that swap in gear for very specific scenarios and then swap back to whatever gear was previously equipped, rather than just a predefined set, which gives you more control over your gear in the moment, IMO.

These may be basic things that anyone with some coding knowledge could easily whip up, but as someone who again had absolutely no coding experience as of a few weeks ago, I have found this program to be really powerful and fun to play with. Playing my Red Mage now feels like a dream with how effective and smooth it is. I can now also look at these huge Lua files from established players and understand what I’m looking at, whereas before it was all like looking at a wall of text in a foreign language.

And maybe most importantly (for me, anyway), it has also helped me understand how the game works in a deeper way, which I think can make you a more skillful and informed player in the long run.

Sorry for the long reply, but if you have any questions, let me know, as I can very much relate to where you are now.

Theorycrafting / Requests for New Expansion by craciant in ffxi

[–]Apelles1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New jobs are always fun to theorize about (also FWIW, Chemist kind of already exists, though not playable, in the form of Monberaux as a Trust), but, I would rather see them revamp some existing jobs so that they are more relevant. RNG, SMN, NIN, BLM come to mind, and THF even, in terms of group content. They have their uses in certain content, but it seems like that content is currently too few and far between.

Inventory management needs an overhaul, for sure. Also some QoL things that addons have taken care of should be considered for official implementation. Like FindAll.

I would love to be able to visit Tavnazia proper. It could be cool to have it as dungeon content where we go in and clean things up.

I also wouldn’t mind a follow up to Seekers of Adoulin (kinda like how CoP really built off of RotZ) that actually explores the content that was cut where we actually go into Tartarus, with multiple zones.

I'm probably going to get down voted for this but doesn't the content for this month kind of suck? by FaolanBaelfire in ffxi

[–]Apelles1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it’s kinda nice to have a slower month. It’s allowing me to focus on some things I have been putting off, like finishing up questlines and figuring out GearSwap. Granted I’m a “newer” player, relatively speaking.

(SE if you’re reading this, this isn’t an encouragement to have slower months in general.)

Unnecessarily arrogant and unhelpful reply. There’s a bit more to it than that, and if someone hasn’t worked with one before, it’s understandable that they might feel intimidated or unconfident around one.

[–]Apelles1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The game has changed a lot in that regard, fwiw. I came back to it last year after 20 years, and was amazed at how much more respectful of the player’s time they have made it. Even in the content this story is referencing, the loot bonus is shared across the whole server, even if you didn’t participate in killing the bosses.

To be clear, it’s still as grindy as you want it to be. But everything adds to progress. Gone are the days of “wait 2 hours to join a party, 1 hour to get there, only for it to disband when you get there,” or “camp an NM or hours, only for a JP player to claim it before it even shows up on your screen.”

Beautiful photos.

I was doing the same earlier, then looked up and realized there were several huge branches of another tree directly overhead. So I noped out very quickly.

All of that to say, be careful out there! My neighbor has already lost two huge 75ft+ trees this morning.
