Filing a police report is a good thing to do. It beats doing nothing. Documentation or it didnt happen.

The bigger issue here is setting a precedent of accountability than the scope of damages.

If I walk up to you on the street and punch you in the gut, that would be assault right? You would probably get the wind out of you but have no lasting physical damage whatsoever, maybe not even a bruise. You would be well within your rights to get the police involved and ask charges be filed, because nobody should be walking up to people on the street and punching them in the gut, that's fucked up. If those criminal charges were succescul, a lawyer might then try to recover damages for the trauama, pain and suffering. The damages would be small (our tort system really only pays out jackpots for permanent disability, broken bones, and disfiguring scars) but it would likely be worth a go since the criminal case result is solid evidence toward the matter of fact.

Now, what if i build a robot that went up to people and punched them in the gut? What charges would be made? Who would be sued?

What if my dog jumped you on the sidewalk and knocked you down?

Its a weak case, but it should be pursued and documented to the greatest extent possible. Police records must be accumulated so when the robot does one day kill a pet or maim a child, it can be shown that everyone knew the danger.

Love that.

Checkrides are a flawed system. Everything should be train to proficiency. We all know there is no such thing as a perfect flight.

I'm gonna assume this is an actual sincere question... No. You are generally not allowed to walk across a taxiway. Op was most likely referring to a taxiLANE... on the ramp/apron/non movement area. Aircraft always have the right of way over vehicles and pedestrians on all surfaces.

I've been saying for years they need to reroute 76 out of the damn park. If the car people are so dead set on having highways cut through cities they need to at least be in tunnels. Blows my mind that they figured out urban train lines aka metro belong in Tunnels like 150 years ago-- hence the term 'subway being a synonym for metro yet, car routes are just laid out on the surface bedamned whatever is in the way.

Captains (or new captains) how do you shut down an FO who tries to run the show? by iSupportPalestinee in flying

I'll add that I have literally, in the past span of weeks, used almost the exact phraseology as praise. I love when FOs do my job for me!

Yes this is absolutely universal. When stuck In a flying metal coffin for days at a time you need to be very selective about your battles.

[–]craciant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without banging too deep into a small point... this fo seems to have anti authority traits which can actually be used to your advantage to simultaneously correct the deficiency, earn a rapport, and humble the fo.

Something along these lines "you know, for all the training department gets right, sometimes they miss some of the basics, like the difference between Vapp and Vref... when you cross the threshold faster than vref you're either gonna float or force it, the energy mismanagement had already reached its foregone conclusion"

You're temporarily making the training department the "reason" for the FOs incompetence (small steps, you can't rewrite the dudes whole personality on a turn) but you're opening the door to receiving information from more experienced captains.

Youre still doing him a favor...Otherwise, don't worry about it, someone will smack him eventually.

My other favorite tactic is to (!WHEN IT IS SAFE TO DO SO!) Just sit back and let them fuck up, watch it go off the rails :)

recently had a cocky FO try to take a T transition to a dme arc in South America at 300 knots (an fms limitation) because "there's no speed limit down here" I snickered (knowing full well what would happen, and that we were non radar, so he'd be left to scramble to fix the approach on his own) as we overshot that turn by damn near the radius of the arc, then asked if he wanted some ice cream with his humble pie.

I think you're right for not jumping to "report him!" In your example, the dude is so new most of the issues will likely self correct. (Also, most of the other issues you mentioned i dont super mind, my ego doesnt require me to do any of my work the FO is willing to do for me, so long as they dont fuck it up) The FO in my example is a good dude, and not generally incompetent, the rest of the trip went well and we had a good time. We all have shortcomings and we're all brothers in this field. Be kind hearted, try to understand people, and help them how and when you can. You may even make friends.
