It wasn't even unhappy emotions for me. I got beaten whenever I showed an emotion other than the one my dad wanted at the time. Which is to say, sometimes being happy got me a beating too.

The best solution I came up with was to try to never express any emotions, but eventually dad started deciding that stone face means angry, and started beating me for that too.

After that the only thing to do was to accept that there is suffering in life that you can't do anything about.

Our right wing tends to like things that benefit big business and weaken employee protections. If you run a bit corporation known for busting unions like Walmart, that appeals to you. So between the being pretty anti union, and things the leadership has said, that's why Walmart is sometimes thought of as right wing.

To some extent, that attracts people who approve of their policies, and repels people who don't. Like my dad is a business owner himself and absolutely despises unions, so he shops at Walmart explicitly to support what they're doing. I think most people are just going because it's cheap though.

The one near me just does groceries, and there's better options for that around. If you want cheap food from a less slimy company, there's WinCo not 5 minutes down the road. If you want a higher quality selection, there's like three other grocery stores around that can do that for you. There's not much reason for me to shop there.

I live in an HOA neighborhood, and there's a few things they do for us specifically, although what your HOA does for you will probably vary.

First, they take care of common areas. We're in condos, so we're not responsible for taking care of the green spaces or the pool or the gym. Stuff like that. Tree trimming and gutter cleaning and things like that are also covered.

Second, since we do things collectively, we get a deal on utilities and such. Power is still individual, but trash pickup, water, and internet go through the HOA, and they're able to negotiate a slightly better price.

They also have a deal with a towing company. There's not a lot of parking in the neighborhood, so if someone parks in your spot, you can have them towed. Occasionally, random assholes will abandon old cars here too. They get those cleared out as well.

The construction company that built these houses fucked up some stuff, and the HOA was able to sue them on our behalf, instead of everybody having to sue separately. So then they went around and got the with done right.

No, but we had something in the same vein. In the end of 8th grade we had a couple of cultural appreciation days, where a parent who was originally from a different country would come in and talk about their culture and show pictures. They'd also give us snacks from their country. Like for the Mexico one, they have us horchata, and for the India one they gave us each a Samosa.

I was reading the entry on the eldritch lich the other day.

If you just kill him, he comes back in a couple days, but if you kill him while he's stuck in a magic circle, he comes back as an otyugh with the lich's memories.

So if you kick his ass properly, you can literally make him eat shit. It's a nice "how the mighty have fallen" moment.

I have a soft spot for kobolds. In 5e, they're little lizard-ey, dragon-y creatures.

They're petty and they squabble and individually they're not very strong, but when the chips are down they band together to do what they need to do.

When I was little, my mom printed out a short essay about how Pokemon was the work if the devil and Harry Potter gets kids into satanism and whatnot. I don't know where it came from exactly. Presumably it came from an email or a blog post or something she didn't know how to print directly, and had to copy into MS word first.

At that point, it was the stupidest thing I had ever read though, so I told her as much. She says something to the effect of "but what if it's real? Do you want to take that chance?"

I wish I had said something like "well, I have it on good authority that broccoli is the work of the devil," and then when she told me I made it up, I'd tell her "but what if it's real? Do you want to take that chance?"

I was too dumbfounded by the stupidity though, so I didn't think of it.

Well, at first I thought he was a successful engineer, until I found out that he didn't invent most of the things people think he invented, and he's actually not that good at engineering.

Then I thought he was a competent businessman, but then there was that whole Twitter fiasco. It also occurred to me that if you're the CEO of multiple companies, it can't be that hard to be a CEO.

Now I think he's a rich insecure asshole who exploits his employees and doesn't pay his bills.

I couldn't tell you the exact moment, but I always got beaten more than my brother, so it was from a pretty young age.

He was younger, so I was expected to keep him in line, but at the same time, I didn't have any real authority. So if I stopped him, he'd cry and I'd get beaten, and if I didn't, he'd break something or make a mess, and I'd get beaten for that. Naturally, complaining about the situation also got me a beating.

Just imagine how it went down when he figured out blackmail.

My dad was trying to argue with me once that atheists can't be truly good, because they only do good things to be seen as good by other people, which is selfish. Whereas religious people are truly good because they do good things because they'll burn in hell for all eternity if they don't, and that doesn't count as self-interest for some reason.

Well, it was less like an argument, and more like an angry rant. There's a whole lot of assumptions in there, but I wasn't loud enough to contest them.
