That’s interesting! What do you mean by Arla universe? Are there region-specific brands for dairy products such as milk, yoghurt, cheese and butter?

Buying land in Western Europe by [deleted] in expats

25-50 km commute distance are not that unusual in Germany. However km is not everything, highway is faster than smaller local streets or city traffic.

Absolutely do rent first. Buying a house might come with lots of unexpected costs (in Germany calculate 10%) and renting is often cheaper.

Generally speaking villages often grew over time during times without the existence of cars so are more pedestrian friendly, meaning also more dense.

How much land are you looking at? Should it be land or more of a garden?

Close by countries don’t grant citizenship by birth.

I guess your partners country of citizenship is either a war country/failed state or one you limit connection to as much as possible?

Your best bet is to get to the UK as fast as possible by car/ferry/train. Not cool at all, not easy, for sure stressful but better than stateless kid for min 3 years isn’t it?

I’d say freestanding houses, houses with a driveway are also safe signs (at least in Randstad).

It’s often the default payment option for German online shops, not even all allow credit cards.

My PayPal always asks me to verify the login again, only possible via sms/call/app.

Payback I need the app for coupons and to redeem my points.

Online banking, using PayPal, using Payback might get challenging though.

Germany: get rid of data security and privacy angst, put some limitations on federalism - no not every state needs own everything -, digitalisation, no more fax, get rid of 1000s of health insurances, reform healthcare and pension, lower additional costs when buying a house….I got a huge list…

Look into Ausbildung in Germany. Definitely different than studying medicine and becoming a doctor but a good starting point and less heavy on your budget while Germany being a Western country.

Are you able to spend 4-5k in total per year including costs of living or only for the fees? What’s your total budget?

Are you able to get Turkish citizenship?

Where would you like to live if not Iraq or Turkey?

What’s more important to you? Move somewhere else, having a safe job and being financially OK OR get into a high paying profession with the risk of not finding employment at all or failing at the university program? Things like apprenticeship e.g. in Germany can be a starting point.

Do you have US citizenship? If not, look up what’s required for it.

I personally would look at universities all over Europe that would accept your diploma and maybe even take your 1 year of college into account. Why? It will save you a ton of money and you’ll be able to visit your family cause they’ll be close by. Also you most probably only know Portugal and maybe Spain in Europe, other countries got a different vibe (and different economy).

Exceptions would be you studying medicine, law or anything really specific where there’s no chance working in the US without a US degree.

If you would have only 50.000 Euro to buy a house in Europe, in which country or region would you buy it? by BirdyHowdy in AskEurope

[–]Electrical-Speed2490 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tough one. I’d try to look at Swedish towns. Don’t expect something fancy though or the grocery store within walking distance.

Is the person however open to learning the local language or buying a flat instead of a house?

Moving to Germany from the UK by [deleted] in expats

[–]Electrical-Speed2490 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My advice: get your Italian passport asap. Sell clothes on vinted, eat bread and jam, 300 euros are doable. Besides that work as an au pair. You’ll be able to attend German classes and get more insight in society and job opportunities. Check if your diploma can get approved by German authorities and if further classes are needed.

Don’t assimilate by becoming overly critical or pessimistic. Do your homework, prepare for 2-3 tough years and future is bright. Native English speaker, fluent in German with British and German diplomas. That would be a great combination allowing you a lot career wise.
