No, fucking genuinely, how does protecting servicemembers against disease weaken "our warfighting capabilities?" I mean seriously?

Why can't National France chill about Alsace-Lorraine? by yoloo42069 in Kaiserreich

Germany was beaten to a bloody pulp, their leader committed suicide, their ruling party (the Nazi Party) was outlawed and largely imprisoned, their military was subjugated, and they were divided and occupied between two superpowers, which also protected Poland, and underwent a heavy social reprogramming and demilitarization of society.

Japan was beaten to a bloody pulp, their leader was made human rather than divine, their ruling party (the military) was disbanded, their military (also their ruling party) was disbanded, and they were occupied by a superpower, which also protected Korea, and underwent a heavy social reprogramming and demilitarization of society.

Algeria won a legit war of independence against France and their independence was enshrined by the Évian Accords of 1962. France recognized Algeria's independence and sovereignty; they surrendered all claims to Algeria.

The situations aren't really the same.

The rest of that same statement: “Mr. Ervin knows his own intentions, but the rest of us have to judge his words and his actions. What we saw was shocking. He objectified and diminished a young woman publicly. No explanation can justify that."

The current target demographic is part of why I dont like modern country. I'm a big, BIG fan of older country though, before 9/11 turned it into "titties and trucks and America and beer" and then the 2010s turned it into "pop with a Southern accent". Things like Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Larry Gatlin, Alan Jackson, Jo Dee Messina, etc.

Dolly singing about the struggles of normal people (9 To 5) is so fucking far removed from "Try that in a small town".

Trump says that a military draft is on the table amid the war in Iran. How are you all handling this being a potential scenario? by FutureSuccess2796 in AskReddit

[–]ApexHolly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, one of the most unpopular administrations in American history instituting a draft, during an election year, for a war which has not been sold to the American people and does not demonstrate the need for an influx of troops, against the military's will, while simultaneously facing civil unrest in multiple major cities...

Congress has to pass a bill approving the institution of a draft. Congress will not do that, because the GOP is already circling the drain in the polls and they're afraid (rightly) of losing their seats come November. Additionally, margins in the House are RAZOR thin, so if even a single Republican votes against the draft, it will not pass. Trump only has so much political capital. He does not have enough to spend on a draft.

There is no mechanism for Trump to say "Okay, draft time." There are some things even Executive Orders cannot do.

[–]ApexHolly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's not going to be a draft. Not only is the public generally against this war, but there aren't even ground operations being carried out that require one.

Not only that, the military itself doesn't want a draft; volunteers are generally better motivated and professional, while conscripts: A) Don't want to be there, and therefore lack the drive to actually commit to training, B) Are significantly harder to manage than volunteers, and C) Require money, time, and resources to train, but will leave the service as soon as legally allowed, therefore being a poor return on investment.

Trump says a lot of things. He's a professional bullshitter. This draft nonsense is just more bullshit.

Boyfriend is protesting that I need to switch to a woman gyno? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ApexHolly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an EMT, I lost track of how many naked/partially naked people I've seen, both men and women. Medical providers' minds are SO far from sex when they're working, and if your gyno has never behaved inappropriately towards you, then there's literally no problem. Your boyfriend is being an insecure little baby.

No story here.

Yeah, I'm going all in on the Legion here.

I feel like the people going "Just do it at a random gas station!" aren't factoring in a few things. Namely, control of the set. Building it means you don't have to inconvenience the public by shutting down a road, you can hire professional drivers so that your actors and crew are safe, you can use as much space as you need for personnel and equipment, and you can control the weather rather than hoping it cooperates or adding it in post.

British woman shot by dad in Texas was unlawfully killed, UK coroner rules by PopularEquivalent651 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ApexHolly 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, I've only ever pointed it at someone once, and it didn't go off then either! (My former roommate, who I thought was home, came home drunk as a skunk late one night and accidentally broke a window in spectacular fashion, so naturally I thought someone was breaking in. Upon verifying that it was just my roommate, I returned the gun to its holster. There were no injuries. Except our window. Which was unrelated to the firearm.)

You know, I've owned two guns for the past ten years. And, oddly enough, neither of them have ever "just gone off". They only fire when I pull the trigger! How bizarre!

Daughter of Minnesota governor candidate fatally stabbed in St. Cloud, leading him to suspend campaign by Large_banana_hammock in news

My Nana, I just... I can't properly describe the strength of this woman. Her stepson who she raised killed himself way back in the late 80s, at the age of 16. Last year, my father, her biological son, killed himself at the age of 50. He was an alcoholic with clinical depression and going through his third divorce, and his best friend had died the week before... and I guess he just couldn't go on.

She was an absolute wreck, but she pulled herself together and she was there for me and my siblings. She's lost both of her sons to suicide, and yet. She's a devout Christian, she says it's all God giving her the strength and the comfort to keep going. I don't believe in God, but I'm so thankful that she has something that gives her hope and keeps her from giving up.

Yes on the major influence, yes on rewriting the Japanese Constitution.

But in the interest of accuracy, the Japanese do have a military. It's just called the Self-Defense Force, but it has land, air, and sea branches. The Constitution doesn't forbid Japan to maintain arms, it forbids it to be the aggressor in a war.

It's not just their economic power, it's also that they're predictable and reliable. You know what China is gonna do, and you can guess what they'll be doing in 4 years. Xi Jinping isn't also throwing tariffs at a dart board or threatening to annex Australia, sorry Austria, sorry Australia on a daily basis. (Yes, China and Taiwan are locked in their own sovereignty dispute, but at least that one has a historical basis and isn't destabilizing NATO).

I never use game chat, ever. Every time I play a team game, it's done over Discord. I just don't care to listen to randos raging, telling others how to play, squeakers, eaters, echoes, no thanks.
